Book excerpt: War Letters of Fallen Englishmen was published following the war in order to remind the living of those who were lost in the name of the British crown--brothers, husbands, fathers, sons. This collection provides, in the very words of those who participated and died in combat, the closest approximation possible to the experience of war. Carefully selected from thousands of letters, those in this collection are poignant, powerful, and graphic and were chosen for their depth of perception, the intensity of their descriptions, and their messages to future generations.

The natural reaction to such a great loss of humanity was to forget the individuals and recast the conflict into one of faceless armies and battles commemorated in stone and metal monuments. War Letters of Fallen Englishmen was published following the war in order to remind the living of those who were lost in the name of the British crown—brothers, husbands, fathers, sons. This edition contains a new foreword by the distinguished World War I historian Jay Winter.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soldier's Progress, From the War Letters of Carnegie Tech Men Early this morning, some thirty moments before the sun, I dressed and Slipped from the house to go for a dip in the pit, an abandoned stone-quarry nearby. It is about a third full of spring water, twenty or thirty feet deep, and blue-green as only spring water can be. After my plunge I scaled the cliff-like walls naked and perched high on a stone, waiting the sun. I busied myself by drawing on the dew-covered leaves of a mullein the initials of all my friends. That mullein, a lusty one, did not have leaves enough for all the people I could think of with pleasure. True, some people need several leaves, for they contain many lovable persons in one. Then the sun came up, a magnificent rose of yellow. With all of this I am back at home writing my good-byes before any of my lazy family are apparent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Field of Honor: A Collection of War Letters and Reminiscences of Three Harvard Undergraduates Who Gave Their Lives in the Great Cause Larry returned to the division just before we started the push on the 96th of September in the Argonne. It was mighty rough sledding, but we managed to keep the Hun on the go toward the rear. On the ninth day out, Larry and I were holding a position along a sunken road just beyond Apremont our men huddling together in the same little fox holes. About noon Larry had an order to move his men forward and occupy an outpost about five hundred yards to the flank and front. W e parted with the expectation of seeing each other in a day or so at most. That night the Boche kept us under a continual bombardment of gas-shells which there was no escaping, and the surgeon ordered many of my company evacuated to hospitals in the rear for treatment. I was sent to Bor deaux, and while there had several letters from Larry and was very glad to hear that he came through the drive untouched. Who has forgotten the thrill of horror experienced when the news came of the attack upon Sumter, confirming the truth he was so slow to believe, that sacrilegious hand had been laid upon the sacred Ark of the Union, and the terrible alternative forced upon the Govern ment of war, dismemberment, or complicity with an evil which would rear its hydra-head, and spread blight over our fair territories and sister States yet to be? And we remember, too, that when the grievous necessity of war was accepted, each one felt that the lion had but to shake Off his lethargy, put forth his strength, and go forward - the Army of the N orth - in a grand triumphal march, to quell and intimidate, by its presence, our rebellious, misguided brethren, and bring them with contrition back into the fold-back into the once United compact, those who had inconsiderately stricken a blow at the great Magna Charta of Union and Liberty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Men of Letters, Vol. 12: Pope, Johnson, Gray His grandson, the present Sir Charles W. Dilke, in 1875. Meanwhile Mr. Croker had been making an ex tensive collection of materials for an exhaustive edition of Pope'sworkainwhichhe wasto beamisted by Mr. Peter Cunningham. After Oroker'e death these materials were submitted by Mr. Murray to Mr. Whitwell Elwin, whose own researches have grmtly extended our knowledge, and who had also the advantage of Mr. Dilke's advice. Mr. Elwin began, in 1871, the publication of the long-promised edition. It was to have occupied ten volumes - five of poems and five of correspondence, the latter of which was to include a very large proportion of previously nu published matter. Unfortunately for all students of Eng lish fitsraturaonly two volumes of poetryand three of correspondence have appeared The notes and prefaces, however, contain a vast amount of information, which slurs up many previously disputed points in the poets career; and it is to be hoped that the materials collected for the remaining volumes will not be ultimately lost. It is easy to dispute some of Mr. Elwin's critical opinions, but it would be impossible to speak too highly of the value of his investigations of facts. Without a study of his work, no adequate knowledge of pope is attainable. Biographer of Pope, if he ever appears, must be endowed with the qualities of an acute critic and a patient antiquarian; and it would take years of labour to work mt all the minute problems connected with the subject. All that I can profess to have done is to have given a short summary of the obvious facts, and of the main conclusions established by the evidence given at length in thewritingsof Mr. Dilke and Mr. Elwin. I have added such criticisms as seemed desirable in a work of this kind, and I must beg pardon by anticipation if I have fallen hiio inaccuracies in relating a story so full of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Men of Letters, Vol. 13: Keats; Hawthorne; Carlyle In this edition, besides the texts reprinted from the first editions, all the genuine letters and additional poems published in 3, 6, 9, 13, and 14 of the above are brought together, as well as most of the biographical notices contained in 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, and 12; also a series of previously unpublished letters of Keats to his sister; with a great amount of valuable illustrative and critical material besides. Except for a few errors, which I shall have occasion to point out, Mr. Forman's work might for the purpose of the student be final, and I have necessarily been indebted to it at every turn.
