Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the flow field in the pancake region of a three-dimensional axisymmetric vortex rate sensor was conducted. Basically the device consists of two coaxial cylindrical surfaces with outlet tubes located on the axis of symmetry perpendicular to the surfaces. Radial inflow of the fluid develops into a sink flow with a vortex generated by an angular rate input through fluid coupling at the periphery of the device. Detailed descriptions of radial and circumferential velocity profiles over a specific range of operating parameters are presented. Hot wire anemometry techniques were utilized to measure the velocity profiles. Experimental results indicate that for gap distances between the coaxial plates greater than 0.25 inches and an inlet radius of 11 inches, the vortex flow throughout is essentially inviscid with boundary layer development along the walls. For gap distances of 0.1 inches or less, fully developed flow occurs near the inlet of the pancake region for pure radial flow. The velocity profiles exhibit a parabolic distribution for pure-radial flow. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made of charged particle motion in a free-vortex flow field to determine the parameters affecting particle motion and to determine the extent to which applied electric fields can influence the particle motion. Four different cases were investigated. These included first, the analysis of the motion of an uncharged particle in a free-vortex; second, analysis of the motion of a charged particle in a viscous medium under the influence of an applied electrostatic field; third, analysis of charged particle motion in a free-vortex under the influence of the applied electrostatic field, assuming the particle is first positively and then negatively charged; and fourth, analysis of the motion of two charged particles in a free-vortex, accounting for field effects due to particle charge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid Vortices is a comprehensive, up-to-date, research-level overview covering all salient flows in which fluid vortices play a significant role. The various chapters have been written by specialists from North America, Europe and Asia, making for unsurpassed depth and breadth of coverage. Topics addressed include fundamental vortex flows (mixing layer vortices, vortex rings, wake vortices, vortex stability, etc.), industrial and environmental vortex flows (aero-propulsion system vortices, vortex-structure interaction, atmospheric vortices, computational methods with vortices, etc.), and multiphase vortex flows (free-surface effects, vortex cavitation, and bubble and particle interactions with vortices). The book can also be recommended as an advanced graduate-level supplementary textbook. The first nine chapters of the book are suitable for a one-term course; chapters 10--19 form the basis for a second one-term course.

Book excerpt: This immensely practical guide to PIV provides a condensed, yet exhaustive guide to most of the information needed for experiments employing the technique. This second edition has updated chapters on the principles and extra information on microscopic, high-speed and three component measurements as well as a description of advanced evaluation techniques. What’s more, the huge increase in the range of possible applications has been taken into account as the chapter describing these applications of the PIV technique has been expanded.

Book excerpt: Many important phenomena in fluid motion are evident in vortex flow, i.e., flows in which vortical structures are significant in determining the whole flow. This book, which consists of lectures given at a NATO ARW held in Grenoble (France) in June 1992, provides an up-to-date account of current research in the study of these phenomena by means of numerical methods and mathematical modelling. Such methods include Eulerian methods (finite difference, spectral and wavelet methods) as well as Lagrangian methods (contour dynamics, vortex methods) and are used to study such topics as 2- or 3-dimensional turbulence, vorticity generation by solid bodies, shear layers and vortex sheets, and vortex reconnection. For researchers and graduate students in computational fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, and applied mathematics.

Book excerpt: From the astrophysical scale of a swirling spiral galaxy, through the geophysical scale of a hurricane, down to the subatomic scale of elementary particles, vortical motion and vortex dynamics have played a profound role in our understanding of the physical world. Kuchemann referred to vortex dynamics as "the sinews and muscles of fluid motion. " In order to update our understanding of vortex dominated flows, NASA Langley Research Center and the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) conducted a workshop during July 9-11, 1985. The subject was broadly divided into five overlapping topics vortex dynamics, vortex breakdown, massive separation, vortex shedding from sharp leading edges and conically separated flows. Some of the experts in each of these areas were invited to provide an overview of the subject. This volume is the proceedings of the workshop and contains the latest, theoretical, numerical, and experimental work in the above-mentioned areas. Leibovich, Widnall, Moore and Sirovich discussed topics on the fundamentals of vortex dynamics, while Keller and Hafez treated the problem of vortex break down phenomena; the contributions of Smith, Davis and LeBalleur were in the area of massive separation and inviscid-viscous interactions, while those of Cheng, Hoeijmakers and Munnan dealt with sharp-leading-edge vortex flows; and Fiddes and Marconi represented the category of conical separated flows.

Book excerpt: A low-speed wind-tunnel study of the flow about a 76/40-deg double-delta wing is described for angles of attack ranging from -10 to 25 deg and Reynolds numbers ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 Million. The study was conducted to provide data for the purpose of understanding the vortical flow behavior and for validating Computational Fluid Dynamics methods. Flow visualization tests have provided insight into the effect of the angle of attack and Reynolds number of the vortex-dominated flow both on and off of the surface of the double-delta wing. Upper surface pressure recordings from pressure orifices and Pressure Sensitive Paint have provided data on the pressures induced by the vortices. Flowfield surveys were carried out at an angle of attack of 10 deg by using a thin 5-hole probe. Numerical solutions of the compressible thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations were conducted and compared to the experimental data. Verhaagen, N. G. and Jenkins, L. N. and Kern, S. B. and Washburn, A.
