Book excerpt: "Seven months after the death of my father, my half-brother Renzo, then twenty-six-years old, delivered me to the nuns at the convent in Tripoli. I remember Renzo crying, but I can't remember my reaction to this life-changing event. Although I was leaving my home, my mother, my baby brother, and all that I called my life, the feelings of that day are gone. Perhaps after my father's death, I ceased trying to feel anything." As World War II encroaches upon North Africa, Mussolini dictates that the children from this Italian colony be sent to Italy for their protection. The anticipated four-month "vacation" in Italy in the hands of the Franciscan nuns starts in June of 1940 and lasts seven years for eleven-year-old Giovanna Bonifazio and her young brother, Guido. From the dungeons of a castle in Naples to the Italian Alps and the American occupation of Florence, Giovanna: Angels in Hell tells the remarkable true story of a Jewish-Italian girl who grows into a young woman during the tumultuous years of World War II. Faced with incredible obstacles, Giovanna's courage and determination help her overcome the fear of having her Jewish ancestry discovered, the horrors of war, and her own personal struggles.

Book Synopsis Neuromathematics of Vision by : Giovanna Citti
Download or read book Neuromathematics of Vision written by Giovanna Citti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-02-08 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the study of the functional architecture of the visual cortex. Its geometrical structure is the differential geometry of the connectivity between neural cells. This connectivity is building and shaping the hidden brain structures underlying visual perception. The story of the problem runs over the last 30 years, since the discovery of Hubel and Wiesel of the modular structure of the primary visual cortex, and slowly cams towards a theoretical understanding of the experimental data on what we now know as functional architecture of the primary visual cortex. Experimental data comes from several domains: neurophysiology, phenomenology of perception and neurocognitive imaging. Imaging techniques like functional MRI and diffusion tensor MRI allow to deepen the study of cortical structures. Due to this variety of experimental data, neuromathematematics deals with modelling both cortical structures and perceptual spaces. From the mathematical point of view, neuromathematical call for new instruments of pure mathematics: sub-Riemannian geometry models horizontal connectivity, harmonic analysis in non commutative groups allows to understand pinwheels structure, as well as non-linear dimensionality reduction is at the base of many neural morphologies and possibly of the emergence of perceptual units. But at the center of the neurogeometry is the problem of harmonizing contemporary mathematical instruments with neurophysiological findings and phenomenological experiments in an unitary science of vision. The contributions to this book come from the very founders of the discipline.

Book Synopsis Etchings of the Heart by : Giovanna Sclafani
Download or read book Etchings of the Heart written by Giovanna Sclafani and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giovanna is a free-lance writer and a published author of her new book, 'Etchings of the Heart' and 'dreams and visions of love'. This book is a result of six years of purging her soul through writing that gave way to a wondrous spiritual awakening, after a series of events beginning with the death of her father and a downward spiraling of her personal life that enabled her to see that everything in life happens for a reason. "When you reach rock bottom, there is nowhere to go but up." says Giovanna Her book delves into the mysteries of life including déjà vu and psychic visions and dreams. The intertwining of modern poetry with mythical characters and legends makes it ethereal and enthralling! Her fantastic view of love is reminiscent of the great love poets of old. "We need a revival of great love poetry again" says Giovanna. "I guess I am a hopeless romantic with my moon being in Venus" I believe that our sun and moon signs play a significant role in our lives. This book is a unique book of poetry, as it is a quintessential array of poetry from the heart; thus came the title 'Etchings of the heart" Giovanna said "my friends in my poetry group on writer's café and Mary's Bridge, all agreed that my poems came straight from my heart and I have to agree. There are all kinds of love that I write about. There is love of family, friends, romantic love, pets, nature, and God. In all love there is beauty to be found. I also write about the paradox of love which consists of Love vs. hate or Agony and ecstasy: both sides of a fiery sword. In her poem 'Never was a day, ' Giovanna writes: "for never was a day, when there was sunshine, without rain, and for love to exist without pain."

Book Synopsis Visions of Sainthood in Medieval Rome by : Lezlie S. Knox
Download or read book Visions of Sainthood in Medieval Rome written by Lezlie S. Knox and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margherita Colonna (1255–1280) was born into one of the great baronial families that dominated Rome politically and culturally in the thirteenth century. After the death of her father and mother, Margherita was raised by her brothers, including Cardinal Giacomo Colonna. The two extant contemporary accounts of her short life offer a daring model of mystical lay piety forged in imitation of St. Francis but worked out in the vibrant world of medieval Rome. In Visions of Sainthood in Medieval Rome, Larry F. Field, Lezlie S. Knox, and Sean L. Field present the first English translations of Margherita Colonna’s two “lives” and a dossier of associated texts, along with thoroughly researched contextualization and scholarly examination. The first of the two lives was written by a layman, the Roman Senator Giovanni Colonna, one of Margherita Colonna's brothers. The second was written by a woman named Stefania, who had been a close follower of Margherita Colonna and assumed leadership of her Franciscan community after Margherita's death. These intriguing texts open up new perspectives on numerous historical questions. How did authorial gender and status influence hagiographic perspective? How fluid was the nature of female Franciscan identity during the era in which the papacy was creating the Order of St. Clare? What were the experiences and influences of female visionaries? And what was the process of saint-making at the heart of an aristocratic Roman family? These texts add rich new texture to our overall picture of medieval visionary culture and will interest students and scholars of medieval and renaissance history, literature, religion, and women's studies.
Book Synopsis The Opera Manual by : Nicholas Ivor Martin
Download or read book The Opera Manual written by Nicholas Ivor Martin and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You are getting ready for a performance of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and you have a few questions. How many clarinets are in the orchestra? How many orchestra members appear onstage? How many different sets are there? How long does the opera typically run? What are the key arias? Are any special effects or ballet choreography required? Who owns the rights? Where was it premiered? What are the leading and supporting roles? The Opera Manual is the only single source for the answers to these and other important questions. It is the ultimate companion for opera lovers, professionals, scholars, and teachers, featuring comprehensive information about, and plot summaries for, more than 550 operas—including every opera that is likely to be performed today, from standard to rediscovered contemporary works. The book is invaluable, especially for opera professionals, who will find everything they need for choosing and staging operas. But it is also a treasure for listeners. Similar reference books commonly skip over scenes and supporting characters in their plot summaries, lacking even the most basic facts about staging, orchestral, and vocal requirements. The Opera Manual, based on the actual scores of the works discussed, is the only exhaustive, up-to-date opera companion—a “recipe book” that will enable its readers to explore those operas they know and discover new ones to sample and enjoy.
