This book was released on 2019-02-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past three decades, China has transformed itself from a stagnant, inward, centrally planned economy into an animated, outward-looking, decentralized market economy. Its rapid growth and trade surpluses have caused uneasiness in Western governments, which perceive this growth to be a result of China's rejection of international protocols that protect intellectual property and its widespread theft and replication of Western technology and products. China's major trading partners, particularly the United States, persistently criticize China for delivering, at best, half-hearted enforcement of intellectual property rights (IPR) norms. Despite these criticisms, Zhenqing Zhang argues that China does respect international intellectual property rights, but only in certain cases. In Intellectual Property Rights in China, Zhang addresses the variation in the effectiveness of China's IPR policy and explains the mechanisms for the uneven compliance with global IPR norms. Covering the areas of patent, copyright, and trademark, Zhang chronicles how Chinese IPR policy has evolved within the legacy of a planned economy and an immature market mechanism. In this environment, compliance with IPR norms is the result of balancing two factors: the need for short-term economic gains that depend on violating others' IPR and the aspirations for long-term sustained growth that requires respecting others' IPR. In case studies grounded in theoretical analysis as well as interviews and fieldwork, Zhang demonstrates how advocates for IPR, typically cutting-edge Chinese companies and foreign IPR holders, can be strong enough to persuade government officials to comply with IPR norms to achieve the country's long-term economic development goals. Conversely, he reveals the ways in which local governments protect IPR infringers because of their own political interests in raising tax revenues and creating jobs.

Book excerpt: The biggest challenge faced by both Beginning and Experienced Wealth Builders is raising the money they need to start, buy, or expand their business activities. This guidebook shows these entrepreneurs how, and where, to get the money needed for their business moneymaking enterprises. Even if the Beginning Wealth Builder (BWB for short) or Experienced Wealth Builder (EWB), has poor credit, a history of bankruptcy, slow pays, or other financial troubles, this guidebook shows him/her how to get the loan, venture capital, public (or private) money, or grant they need. Since businesses vary widely in the amount of money needed, this book covers getting funding from just a few thousand dollars to multi-millions. Businesses covered range from the small mom-and-pop type activity to the successful firm having up to 500 employees. Either type of business can use the many hands-on directions given in this book.

Book excerpt: The most important development in American culture of the last two decades is the emergence of independent cinema as a viable alternative to Hollywood's safe and innocuous entertainment. Indeed, while Hollywood studios devote much of their time and energy to churning out big-budget, star-studded event movies, a renegade independent cinema that challenges mainstream fare continues to flourish with strong critical support and loyal audiences.

Book excerpt: What’s one of the most important things someone can do to improve their success in the business world? Believe it or not, it’s physical exercise. But why should someone turn to sports if they want to be more successful in business? And what if they’ve never been very physically active before and now have no idea where to start? Unlike other books about exercise, Play for Profit isn’t a step-by-step guide on how to lose weight. Christopher Dedeyan and Matthieu Dubreucq instead promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and help the reader assess how sports and exercise can improve their business—and even other aspects of their life. With a personable and friendly style, Christopher and Matthieu demonstrate that: • sports and fitness are great ways to learn important lessons that are applicable to the business world, such as learning from failure and managing a team toward success. • exercise makes your body and mind feel more energized and focused. • many successful businesspeople have worked physical activity into their weekly and even daily routines. Using examples ranging from personal anecdotes to famous and successful businesspeople, Christopher and Matthieu show us in Play for Profit that investing in your health will maximize your wealth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing Europeanisation of the law of delict/torts has produced textbooks, casebooks, monographs, and also sets of model rules of a genuinely European character. A major gap still existing today relates to the experiences gathered in the national legal systems over the past decades. The present work attempts to fill this gap for one key element of tort law: the notion of damage. It thus does what the previous volume in the ‘Digest of European Tort Law’ series did for another key element, ie natural causation. Once again, the publication contains a selection of the most important cases decided in 26 states across Europe as well as by the European Court of Justice. For each case the facts and the relevant court decision are presented, and the decision is analysed within the wider context of the development of the respective legal system. In addition, the editors provide comparative analyses of the case law reported in this volume concerning all the specific problems raised under the heading of damage. The publication also looks into how key cases would be resolved under the European model rules drafted in the field of tort law; and it also highlights cases from earlier periods of legal history. The editors believe that the material gathered here may provide guidance for an organic convergence of the national legal systems in Europe. It constitutes the basis of an acquis commun that is infinitely richer (though also much more complex) than the rather bland and abstract concepts contained in national codifications, European legislation, and the modern model rules.
