Book excerpt: Handheld mobile devices have created a new possibility for accessing video content over the wireless network. However, the limited resource, communication bandwidth, and mobility issues present challenges for effective delivery of the video data. On the other hand, presenting the video content with multiple collaborated mobile devices is now made possible by the pico projectors. A group of users can view and share the same video stream by placing their mobile device embedded with pico projectors in a tiled setup. With proper coordination between the devices, we can create a higher resolution display, and evenly distribute the power consumption and network traffic flow to the devices. In the first part of this dissertation, we discuss the issue of collaborating multiple devices and playing the same video content synchronized. Because the synchronization precision requirement is strict for playing multimedia content, we developed a scheme to synchronize multiple devices using only visual feedback. With the visual feedback from the embedded cameras, the mobile devices are able to find out the clock information of neighboring devices, and synchronize themselves autonomously. After the devices are synchronized, the mobile devices start to create a video stream over the wireless channel. To maximize the bandwidth, we propose a distributed and deterministic channel access function, which uses Latin squares to assign channel access slots and avoid potential packet collisions. Once the devices start moving and cause a handoff, the system will have to locate the new position of the devices and relay the data traffic to the new place. However, this process usually will interrupt the ongoing stream and disconnect the device from the network. The last part of this dissertation discusses the mobility issue and propose a solution that is also applicable to a large scale wireless network.

Book excerpt: In large-scale media-sharing social networks, where millions of users create, share, link and reuse media content, there are clear challenges in protecting content security and intellectual property, and in designing scalable and reliable networks capable of handling high levels of traffic. This comprehensive resource demonstrates how game theory can be used to model user dynamics and optimize design of media-sharing networks. It reviews the fundamental methodologies used to model and analyze human behavior, using examples from real-world multimedia social networks. With a thorough investigation of the impact of human factors on multimedia system design, this accessible book shows how an understanding of human behavior can be used to improve system performance. Bringing together mathematical tools and engineering concepts with ideas from sociology and human behavior analysis, this one-stop guide will enable researchers to explore this emerging field further and ultimately design media-sharing systems with more efficient, secure and personalized services.

Book excerpt: Although the information and communication technology (ICT) industry accounted for only 2 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2007, the explosive increase in data traffic brought about by a rapidly growing user base of more than a billion wireless subscribers is expected to nearly double that number by 2020. It is clear that now is the time to rethink how we design and build our networks. Green Networking and Communications: ICT for Sustainability brings together leading academic and industrial researchers from around the world to discuss emerging developments in energy-efficient networking and communications. It covers the spectrum of research subjects, including methodologies and architectures for energy efficiency, energy-efficient protocols and networks, energy management, smart grid communications, and communication technologies for green solutions. Examines foraging-inspired radio-communication energy management for green multi-radio networks Considers a cross-layer approach to the design of energy-efficient wireless access networks Investigates the interplay between cooperative device-to-device communications and green LTE cellular networks Considers smart grid energy procurement for green LTE cellular networks Details smart grid networking protocols and standards Considering the spectrum of energy-efficient network components and approaches for reducing power consumption, the book is organized into three sections: Energy Efficiency and Management in Wireless Networks, Cellular Networks, and Smart Grids. It addresses many open research challenges regarding energy efficiency for IT and for wireless sensor networks, including mobile and wireless access networks, broadband access networks, home networks, vehicular networks, intelligent future wireless networks, and smart grids. It also examines emerging standards for energy-efficient protocols. Book excerpt: Real Time Video Streaming had taken a prominent role in recent years and had emerged as state of the art technology in the field of Mobile Communications. The advancements in Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems (UMTS) networks have made it easier to provide a wide variety of multimedia applications that requires robust bandwidth and stable networks. The method of streaming videos is particularly useful in wireless networks since the mobile devices in those wireless networks have limited resources for data storage. However, there is a growing need to share videos in real time as the use of mobile devices increases; mobile devices can receive real time video streams over wireless mobile networks. These would be useful in video conferencing, mobile TV, and the broadcasting of live events. A lot of research is ongoing in the adaptation of present 3G mobile networks to support real-time video streaming services.

Book excerpt: Multimedia services and applications became the driving force in the development and widespread deployment of wireless broadband access technologies and high speed local area networks. Mobile phone service providers are offering wide range of multimedia applications over high speed wireless data networks. People can watch live TV, stream on-demand video clips and place videotelephony calls using multimedia capable mobile devices. Mobile devices will soon support capturing and displaying high definition video. Similar evolution is also occurring in the local area domain. The video receiver or storage devices were conventionally connected to display devices using cables. By using wireless local area networking (WLAN) technologies, convenient and cable-free connectivity can be achieved. Media over wireless home networks prevents the cable mess and provides mobility to portable TVs.

This development offers exciting new opportunities for media companies: the mobile communication system creates new usage contexts for media content and services; the social use of mobile communications suggests that identity representation in social networks, impulsive access to trusted media brands, and micro-coordination emerge as new sources of value creation in the media industries. In the light of this background, this book takes two different viewpoints on the development of mobile media: from a competitive strategy point of view it analyzes the extension of cross-media strategies and the emergence of cross-network strategies; from a public policy point of view it develops demands and requirements for an innovation policy that fosters innovation in mobile media markets.

Book excerpt: Although the existing layering infrastructure--used globally for designing computers, data networks, and intelligent distributed systems and which connects various local and global communication services--is conceptually correct and pedagogically elegant, it is now well over 30 years old has started create a serious bottleneck. Using Cross-Layer Techniques for Communication Systems: Techniques and Applications explores how cross-layer methods provide ways to escape from the current communications model and overcome the challenges imposed by restrictive boundaries between layers. Written exclusively by well-established researchers, experts, and professional engineers, the book will present basic concepts, address different approaches for solving the cross-layer problem, investigate recent developments in cross-layer problems and solutions, and present the latest applications of the cross-layer in a variety of systems and networks.
