Dem-gegenüber vertritt die Autorin in der vorliegenden Untersuchung die These, daß die Hermeneutik die ethische Dimension des Anderen nicht negiert, sondern vielmehr affirmiert: Gerade die Achtung der radikalen Differenz erfordert Verstehenssuche und Verständigung, ebenso wie sich der hermeneutische Prozeß nur vollzieht, wenn er mit radikaler Differenz konfrontiert ist. Zur Entwicklung dieser These werden zwei scheinbar konträre philosophische Konzepte miteinander verknüpft: die Theorie von Hans-Georg Gadamer, der als Begründer der zeitgenössischen Hermeneutik gilt, und das Alteritätsdenken von Emmanuel Lévinas, der zu den bedeutendsten und eigenständigsten Ethikern des 20. Jahrhunderts zählt. Die Erweiterung des Gadamerschen Konzepts um die Ethik Lévinas' führt zu einer Modifizierung der Hermeneutik, die eine denkbare Beschreibung für einen wichtigen Bereich des Soziallebens liefert.

Insbesondere untersucht er fachwissenschaftliche Verfahren wie die Geschichtswissenschaft und deren Verwendung von Sprache. Gadamer insistiert auf der Reflexion von Begriffen, die z. B. bei der Beschreibung historischer Phänomene verwendet werden. Der Historiker unterwirft andernfalls seine Gegenstände den eigenen > Vorbegriffen“. Indem diese unweigerlich am Verstehen beteiligt sind, wäre es jedoch ebenso naiv, sie stillschweigend beiseite zu lassen. Vielmehr verlangt das Verstehen beispielsweise eines Textes, > die eigenen Vorbegriffe mit ins Spiel zu bringen, damit die Meinung des Textes für uns wirklich zum Sprechen gebracht wird“. Die Vorbegriffe sind, fernab bloßer Subjektivität, eine Brücke auf dem Weg zur Wahrheit. Ein Beispiel für sein hermeneutisches Verfahren im Umgang mit Literatur gab Gadamer 1973 mit Wer bin Ich und wer bist Du? Kommentar zu Paul Celans Gedichtfolge > Atemkristall“.
