Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arts Therapies in the Treatment of Depression is a comprehensive compilation of expert knowledge on arts therapies’ potential in successfully addressing depression. The book identifies ways of addressing the condition in therapy sessions, shares experience of tools and approaches which seem to work best and guides towards a conscious and confident evidence-based practice. Including contributions from international experts in the field of arts therapies, the book presents some of the most recent, high-profile and methodologically diverse research, whether in the form of clinical trials, surveys or case studies. The three sections of this volume correspond to particular life stages and explore major topics in arts therapies practice and the nature of depression in children, adults and in later life. Individual chapters within the three sections represent all four arts therapies disciplines. The book hopes to improve existing arts therapies practice and research, by encouraging researchers to use creativity in designing meaningful research projects and empowering practitioners to use evidence creatively for the benefit of their clients and the discipline. Arts Therapies in the Treatment of Depression is an essential resource for arts therapies researchers, practitioners and arts therapists in training. It should also be of interest to other health researchers and health professionals, particularly those who work with clients experiencing depression and in multidisciplinary teams.

Book excerpt: One of the most pressing issues in current and future human resource management is the inclusion of strengths and life stages within human resource structures. This book examines in a multi-perspective, innovative and participatory way the conditioning factors for persistent stereotyping processes in the context of age and work. Levers for change as well as the circular model for optimizing or implementing life-phase oriented human resource management are presented. The book is valuable for lecturers and students with a focus on corporate and human resources management. It also offers practical assistance for corporate leaders and human resources managers for the implementation of a strength-oriented human resources management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social norms are rules that prescribe what people should and should not do given their social surroundings and circumstances. Norms instruct people to keep their promises, to drive on the right, or to abide by the golden rule. They are useful explanatory tools, employed to analyze phenomena as grand as international diplomacy and as mundane as the rules of the road. But our knowledge of norms is scattered across disciplines and research traditions, with no clear consensus on how the term should be used. Research on norms has focused on the content and the consequences of norms, without paying enough attention to their causes. Social Norms reaches across the disciplines of sociology, economics, game theory, and legal studies to provide a well-integrated theoretical and empirical account of how norms emerge, change, persist, or die out. Social Norms opens with a critical review of the many outstanding issues in the research on norms: When are norms simply devices to ease cooperation, and when do they carry intrinsic moral weight? Do norms evolve gradually over time or spring up spontaneously as circumstances change? The volume then turns to case studies on the birth and death of norms in a variety of contexts, from protest movements, to marriage, to mushroom collecting. The authors detail the concrete social processes, such as repeated interactions, social learning, threats and sanctions, that produce, sustain, and enforce norms. One case study explains how it can become normative for citizens to participate in political protests in times of social upheaval. Another case study examines how the norm of objectivity in American journalism emerged: Did it arise by consensus as the professional creed of the press corps, or was it imposed upon journalists by their employers? A third case study examines the emergence of the norm of national self-determination: has it diffused as an element of global culture, or was it imposed by the actions of powerful states? The book concludes with an examination of what we know of norm emergence, highlighting areas of agreement and points of contradiction between the disciplines. Norms may be useful in explaining other phenomena in society, but until we have a coherent theory of their origins we have not truly explained norms themselves. Social Norms moves us closer to a true understanding of this ubiquitous feature of social life.

The volume brings together cutting-edge interdisciplinary scholarship from countries such as Australia, Finland, Japan, South Africa, the Philippines and Sweden. It proposes ‘glocalisation’ as a useful concept for re-framing conditions, methodologies and practices for social work in a world perspective. Part I of the volume, 'The Glocalisation of Social Issues', deals with major environmental, social and cultural issues – migration and human rights, environmental problems and gendered violence. Part II, 'Methodological Re-Shaping and Spatial Transgression in Glocalised Social Work', develops an epistemology of situated knowledge and methodologies inspired by art, creative writing and cultural geography, focusing on physical, material and emotional spatial dimensions of relevance to social work. Part III, 'Responses from Social Work as a Glocalised Profession', examines how social work has responded to specific social problems, crises and vulnerabilities in a glocalised world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boundless long-term retention of information about people's lives on the world wide web jeopardizes their reputation and deprives them of a fresh start. Mr. Costeja González' reputation, for example, was damaged by twelve year-old newspaper articles on Google attesting him a poor creditworthiness (ECJ C-131/12). His case triggered a public discussion about creating a "forgetting Internet" and counteracting the "age of everlasting personal data retention." This book argues that the world wide web endangers people's reputation by presenting them and their online profiles short of temporal context. Drawing on Heidegger's and Ricoeur's philosophy of time, Walzer's spheres of justice, Solove's visionary pragmatism for privacy and Nissenbaum's theory of privacy as contextual integrity, the book proposes safeguarding the "temporal contextual integrity" of personal information online. The author suggests designing web user interfaces for making the passage of time within people's online representations prominent. With time-sensitive interfaces, employers start ignoring job seekers' obsolete reputation in online labor markets. Technology requirements for a "forgetting Internet" are discussed.

He also details reasons for the existence of international social welfare and the challenges that arise from it. The author includes an important section on applied international social welfare that addresses the concerns of practitioners--concerns that have been neglected in much of the literature in the field. An entire section of the book is devoted to issues of social work practice, social developments, the activities of international agencies, and their collaborative efforts. While practical application is an important focus of the book, several chapters deal with key theoretical debates in the field. The author also includes descriptive chapters that provide comprehensive accounts of world social conditions and social welfare institutions.
