Zu Beginn der Arbeit möchte ich kurz den Begriff Tierhetzen (venationes) erläutern und zeitlich deren Ursprung eingrenzen. Danach werde ich mich mit den Tiere, deren Herkunft und den Transportmöglichkeiten beschäftigen. Dabei gehe ich dann genauer auf die Tiere, die Jagd nach diesen wilden Tieren, sowie den Transport und Verschiffung dieser ein. Der dritte Abschnitt der Seminararbeit behandelt das eigentliche Schauspiel (ludi), in dem ich auf den Ablauf der Tierhetzen und die verschiedenen Arten der venationes eingehen werde. Nachstehend werde ich noch erläutern, was mit den Leichen und Kadavern passierte. Abschließend werde ich die wichtigsten Eckpunkte der Proseminararbeit zusammenfassen.

Sie bezieht sich auf den Aufsatz von Donald Kyle "Animal Spectacls in Ancient Rome. Meat and Meaning". Er ist der Meinung, dass das Fleisch der Arenatiere einen so hohen symbolischen, wirtschaftlichen und somit auch politischen Wert gehabt haben muss, dass es durch die Spieleveranstalter zum Verzehr an die städtische Bevölkerung gegeben wurde. So wie Kyle durch eine Schülerfrage mit seinen Forschungen begann, so entstand meine Fragestellung durch eine Frage meines Professors: Für wie glaubwürdig halte ich Kyles These anhand seiner Argumentation in seinem Aufsatz "Animal Spectacles in Ancient Rome. Meat and Meaning". Auch wenn die Frage nach der Entsorgung der Tierkörper zunächst banal klingen mag, so erfordert ihre Beantwortung doch das Vordringen in zahlreiche komplexe Themenbereiche. Um seine These zu stützen, bezieht sich also auch Kyle auf die Entstehungsgeschichte der Tierhetzen und damit auf die antike Jagd und traditionelle Opferungen. Und ebenso argumentiert er mit dem Essverhalten der Bevölkerung, der Versorgungslage in Städten und politischen Umständen. Christliche Quellen erhalten im Zusammenhang mit Tierhetzen, wie auch bei anderen öffentlichen Spektakeln, eine Sonderstellung und werden mit als führendes Argument behandelt. Trotz dieser thematisch breit aufgestellten Argumentation und dem logischen Aufbau seiner Argumente, ist noch nicht gewährleistet, dass diese ausreichend durch Quellen gestützt sind. Um ausschließen zu können, dass seine Argumentation lediglich auf Plausibilitätsbasis beruht, muss jedes seiner Argumente auf seine zugrundeliegenden Quellen untersucht und auf deren Aussagekraft und Glaubwürdigkeit geprüft werden. Um zu Kyles These wissenschaftlich Stellung beziehen zu können, ist es nicht möglich, einzelne Hauptargumente außer Acht zu lassen, jedoch werde ich mich bei meiner Arbeit mit manchen Themengebieten mehr beschäftigen als mit anderen, da ich sie für die Fragestellung als relevanter einstufe. Alternative Entsorgungsmethoden der Tierkadaver, wie beispielsweise durch den Tiber oder das Verfüttern an andere Arenatiere werden nicht thematisiert, denn deren Untersuchung würde in diesem Fall zu weit führen.
