It is fast growing and may begin to flower only 2 months after seeding. The thick stem is furrowed longitudinally. The vine is much branched and climbs by means of branched tendrils arising from the stem with the leaf. The foliage is covered with soft hairs and has a musky or foul smell when crushed. The leaves of the bottle gourd are up to 40 centimeters broad, circular in overall shape, with a cordate base and smooth margins, or with a few broad lobes, or with undulate margins. Leaves have a velvety texture because of fine hairs, especially on the undersurface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vegetables for the Hot Humid Tropics, Vol. 8: Vegetable Corns, Zea Mays Corn is highly recommended as a vegetable for the hot, humid Tropics. It can be produced throughout the year; it grows, flowers, and fruits in all but the heaviest rainy season. Although the dried seed sometimes cannot be produced during rains, the vegetable is not damaged. Furthermore, the vegetable is fairly nutritious, and in its many forms adds welcome variety to the diet. In the United States, vegetable corn (sweet corn) is second only to the tomato in importance as a vegetable. However, in the Tropics much needs yet to be done to promote the use of vegetable corns. Amaranths are now found throughout the Tropics and the Temperate Zone. Vegetable and grain varieties were introduced so quickly after the discovery of the new world that tracing the course of introduction is impossible. 'and amaranths continue to travel as new interest is expressed in them as vegetable and grain sources. Amaranth enters a region, thrives when cultivated, appears adapted, then frequently dies out from neglect. The process of introduction and trial is continuous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vegetables for the Hot, Humid Tropics, Vol. 3: Chaya, Cnidoscolus Chayamansa Chaya is an ancient vegetable from the Yucatan Peninsula of Mex ico. It occurs in both wild forms and cultivated forms that are propa gated asexually. The cultivated forms have apparently been derived by selection. The literature (3, 12) suggests that both forms are used as food, especially in emergencies. During harvest of the leaves, care must be taken to avoid the stinging hairs. The best cultivated varieties are free or almost free of them. In addition to being found in Yucatan, chaya is found on the Pacific coast of Mexico and probably Central America. Normally, chaya occurs at low elevations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vegetables for the Hot, Humid Tropics, Vol. 1: The Winged Bean, Psophocarpus Tetragonolobus The greatest potential for the winged bean is in the home garden or in small-scale, high-intensity agriculture, because the vines need staking, bear over a long period of time, and require regular harvesting. The potential of the high-protein dried seed has scarcely been evaluated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
