Book excerpt: Ringed seal (Phoca hispida) morphometric data from three locations in the eastern Canadian Arctic were compared to examine geographic variation in aspects of growth, life-history, and condition. Seals from Eureka (80$\sp\circ$ N) reached an asymptotic length of 150.9 cm, 14.0 cm greater than individuals from Arctic Bay (73$\sp\circ$ N) and 22.7 cm greater than those from Pangnirtung (66$\sp\circ$ N). Seals may reach sexual maturity sooner in Arctic Bay than Eureka or Pangnirtung. Statistically significant sexual dimorphism was evident in Pangnirtung were males were 6.7% longer than females. Condition, expressed as blubber content (% of total mass) was estimated using three published indices of condition: blubber thickness, axillary girth/length $\bullet$ 100, and the 'LMD' index. These indices did not adequately describe changes in condition for this data and did not provide a meaningful measure of the absolute amount of fat present. A new method of estimating absolute sculp (skin and blubber) mass from sculp volume calculated by a prolate spheroid model was developed. Regressions of mass in relation to length for various seasons demonstrated that spring and summer mass loss averaged 14 kg for an adult seal with an asymptotic length of 128 cm. Prior to sexual maturity, juveniles lost proportionally less mass than adults. Observed differences in growth and condition may reflect variation in life-history strategies related to primary productivity and predation pressure by polar bear (Ursus maritimus) and Inuit.

Book excerpt: Contaminant levels in ringed seals from the western Canadian Arctic (Ulukhaktok (Holman), N.W.T.) were reviewed along with biological (age, sex, morphometric measurements), ecological ([delta]15N, [delta]13C), and sea ice parameters (mercury only). Mercury levels in muscle tissue increased with age and [delta]15N. Muscle mercury was significantly associated to length of the previous ice-free season (quadratic regression) between 1973-2007. Higher mercury concentrations as a result of short (i.e. two months) and long (i.e. five months) ice-free seasons may reflect particular environmental conditions leading to shifts in the composition and distribution of prey available to ringed seals. Temporal trends of organochlorine contaminants in blubber illustrated general decreasing levels of chlorobenzenes, hexachlorocyclohexanes, chlordanes, chlorobornanes, dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethanes and polychlorinated biphenyls in male and female adult ringed seals. Results parallel contaminant trends in arctic air. Organochlorine contaminants were significantly higher in male adults compared to female adults. Blubber thickness and age were also important variables in determining concentrations.

Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has been monitoring the health and status of ringed seals (Phoca hispida) in Alaska since 1960 by collecting information and samples from the Alaska Native subsistence harvest. This monitoring program is especially important because agencies are unable to overcome the logistical and sampling constraints necessary to estimate seal abundance in remote, ice covered waters. As such, reliable estimates of ringed seal abundance or population trend are lacking. Retrospective data analyses from this monitoring program allow us to examine how parameters that affect population size and status may vary in time and how current conditions compare with past conditions. Parameters we monitor that are indicative of population health or status include growth rate, body condition, diet, age distribution, sex ratio, age of maturation, and pregnancy rate. Since 2000, ADF&G has also conducted surveys for local knowledge and hunter preferences and analyzed tissue samples for contaminants and disease. All of these collections rely on the cooperation of coastal subsistence communities. Villages that have participated in the sampling program span the region from Hooper Bay in the Bering Sea to Kaktovik in the Beaufort Sea, including islands in the Bering Sea; an area that encompasses most of the range of ringed seals in Alaska.
