Book excerpt: The variable speed limit (VSL) system is designed to display both the maximum and minimum speed boundaries based on measured traffic and environmental conditions. In addition, short driver information messages can be displayed to warn of downstream conditions. The VSL can be installed to operate independently (Isolated), in a series of stations (Linked), as a component of a larger management system (Integrated), and in the future as part of an "In-Vehicle" component to provide all types of driver information (In-Vehicle). This analysis compares the four types of VSL systems to the existing "fixed" speed limit system which can display only one speed for all conditions

Download or read book User and Non-user Benefit Analysis for Highways written by and published by American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document updates and expands the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) User Benefit Analysis for Highways, also known as the Red Book. This AASHTO publication helps state and local transportation planning authorities evaluate the economic benefits of highway improvements. This update incorporates improvements in user-benefit calculation methods and, for the first time, provides guidance for evaluating important non-user impacts of highways. Previous editions of the Red Book provided guidance regarding user benefit measurement only. This update provides a framework for project evaluations that accurately account for both user and non-user benefits. The manual and accompanying CD-ROM provide a valuable resource for people who analyze the benefits and costs of highway projects.

Book Synopsis Economic Impacts of Intelligent Transportation Systems by : E Bekiaris
Download or read book Economic Impacts of Intelligent Transportation Systems written by E Bekiaris and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-07-24 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are unique complexities associated with the economic valuation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and telematics. Traditional methods of quantitative analysis may not be appropriate in accurately and reliably assessing the economic impacts of these technologies. Although advanced transportation and related technologies are being planned and deployed at an increasingly rapid pace, many of the technologies are still relatively new, and their use may not be widespread. Much of the initial information and statistics gathered have been anecdotal and have focused more on benefits rather than costs. Therefore, difficulties arise due to the lack of historical data and 'lessons learned' from which to draw upon. In addition, compared with traditional transportation infrastructure, ITS technologies have different life cycles, cost structures, and a number of interrelated elements. This book addresses these concerns and proposes new economic assessment techniques as well as modifications to existing ones. Included are case studies from a multitude of North American, European, and Asian nations and major metropolitan areas covering a wide range of ITS technologies including freeway management, electronic toll collection, advanced driver assistance systems, and traveller information systems.

It covers field testing, energy simulation, and retrofit analysis of existing buildings. It examines subsystems—such as lighting, heating, and cooling—and techniques needed for accurately evaluating them. Auditors, managers, and students of energy systems will find this book to be an invaluable resource for their work. Explores state-of-the-art techniques and technologies for reducing energy combustion in buildings. Presents the latest energy efficiency strategies and established methods for energy estimation. Provides calculation examples that outline the application of the methods described. Examines the major building subsystems: lighting, heating, and air-conditioning. Addresses large-scale retrofit analysis approaches for existing building stocks. Introduces the concept of energy productivity to account for the multiple benefits of energy efficiency for buildings. Includes Case Studies to give readers a realistic look at energy audits. Moncef Krarti has vast experience in designing, testing, and assessing innovative energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies applied to buildings.
