National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) results are oriented toward such practical use. Each year, more campuses use their NSSE results in innovative ways to improve the undergraduate experience. In the spring and summer of 2008, NSSE conducted an in-depth examination of how institutions use their NSSE results. Staff members from the NSSE Institute and doctoral students from NSSE client service teams interviewed more than 40 representatives from participating colleges and universities. The institutions represented a range of size, Carnegie-type, region, locale, and private-public control. This report highlights the approaches these different types of institutions have taken to move from data to action. The selected results reported are based on more than 285,000 census-administered or randomly sampled students attending 546 U.S. bachelor's degree-granting institutions that participated in NSSE in Spring 2012 (eight U.S. institutions were excluded due to special circumstances). This paper contains several themes. The first--Key NSSE Findings Revisited and Updated--not only revisits some of the strongest and most consistent findings to date, but refreshes and at times amplifies the prior results using 2012 data. The second theme reviews the updated NSSE survey for 2013 and introduces new content, summary measures, and customization options. Next, the results are presented from three sets of experimental questions, each of which delves into key issues and trends faced by today's college students: choice of major, financial stress, and social networking. Finally, this paper uses data from the Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) and the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) to provide additional evidence of the utility of these companion instruments. These include an analysis of high school engagement and campus support, and how faculty may differ in their teaching approaches by disciplinary area. A list of resources is included. The selected results reported in this report are based on almost 380,000 randomly sampled students attending 722 U.S. baccalaureate-granting institutions who completed NSSE in spring 2008. This report features three themes. The first theme--"Looking Within"--examines the large and often unexamined variation that exists among students, even those attending the same institution. This report shows how little difference actually exists between institutions and illustrates variation among students by way of case studies using real data from two NSSE institutions. Then it analyzes two important current issues, the experiences of transfer students and the engagement of students taking courses delivered primarily online. The second theme--"Promoting Success in the First Year"--draws from the BCSSE (Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement) survey, including the valuable BCSSE-NSSE longitudinal data, and a set of experimental questions about a student's plans to persist at the institution. It also examines the experiences of underprepared students, i.e., those assigned to developmental or basic skills courses in their first year. The third theme--"Writing Matters"--draws on core survey items and a promising new set of questions about the writing process administered experimentally in 2008. While NSSE measures the quantity of student writing, the additional questions assessed the quality of the writing process, including best practices in student writing and in the ways faculty assign and teach writing in their courses. However, many undergraduates in the United States do not study science, mathematics, engineering, or technology (SME&T) for more than one year, if at all. Additionally, many of the SME&T courses that students take are focused on one discipline and often do not give students an understanding about how disciplines are interconnected or relevant to students' lives and society. To address these issues, the National Research Council convened a series of symposia and forums of representatives from SME&T educational and industrial communities. Those discussions contributed to this book, which provides six vision statements and recommendations for how to improve SME&T education for all undergraduates. The book addresses pre-college preparation for students in SME&T and the joint roles and responsibilities of faculty and administrators in arts and sciences and in schools of education to better educate teachers of K-12 mathematics, science, and technology. It suggests how colleges can improve and evaluate lower-division undergraduate courses for all students, strengthen institutional infrastructures to encourage quality teaching, and better prepare graduate students who will become future SME&T faculty.

Book excerpt: Although recent results from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) suggest there is considerable variation in levels of undergraduate student engagement within Carnegie institutional classifications, research also suggests different classifications of institutions exhibit different types (Pike and Kuh, 2005) and levels (Pike, Kuh and Gonyea, 2003) of student engagement. However, an important question that requires additional examination is the potential relationship between particular engagement variables and various outcomes of interest to students and institutions. Given the time and resource limitations that faculty, staff, and administrators face in their efforts to improve academic quality, analyses that move beyond norm-based or statistical comparisons and test empirical relationships within theory-based models of quality in undergraduate education may provide a more effective means to focus improvement efforts. This study examines student-reported learning and development factor scores, the likelihood of persistence, and students' ratings of their overall educational experience based on NSSE responses from over 1,500 first-year and senior students in 2004 at a large, research-extensive university. Using Chickering and Gamson's (1987) "Seven Principles for Effective Practice in Undergraduate Education" as a conceptual framework to guide variable selection, the results of four models suggest that a high level of academic challenge, institutional emphasis on academic work and studying, and prompt feedback on academic performance may provide the most productive avenues for enhancing the impact and quality of undergraduate education at large, research-extensive universities. Possible explanations and potential implications of these and other findings for students, faculty members, institutional leaders, policymakers, and accrediting bodies are discussed. Book excerpt: While there is consensus that institutions need to represent their educational effectiveness through documentation of student learning, the higher education community is divided between those who support national standardized tests to compare institutions’ educational effectiveness, and those who believe that valid assessment of student achievement is based on assessing the work that students produce along and at the end of their educational journeys. This book espouses the latter philosophy—what Peggy Maki sees as an integrated and authentic approach to providing evidence of student learning based on the work that students produce along the chronology of their learning. She believes that assessment needs to be humanized, as opposed to standardized, to take into account the demographics of institutions, as students do not all start at the same place in their learning. Students also need the tools to assess their own progress. In addition to updating and expanding the contents of her first edition to reflect changes in assessment practices and developments over the last seven years, such as the development of technology-enabled assessment methods and the national need for institutions to demonstrate that they are using results to improve student learning, Maki focuses on ways to deepen program and institution-level assessment within the context of collective inquiry about student learning. Recognizing that assessment is not initially a linear start-up process or even necessarily sequential, and recognizing that institutions develop processes appropriate for their mission and culture, this book does not take a prescriptive or formulaic approach to building this commitment.
