American students continue to fall behind their counterparts mathematically in developing countries. The U.S. Department of Education (2009) warned that the current state of math performance “shortchanges our students’ future and endangers our nation's prosperity and security” (p. 26).Test results from the 2016 New York State Education Department (NYSED), for example, reported that 889,296 students took the Common Core Math State Exam last spring. The New York City (NYC) students who met the math proficiency level by ethnic subgroups were: Asian/Pacific Islander (67.2%), White (56.7 %), American Indian/Alaska Native (32.2%), Hispanic (24.3%), and Black (20%). These disproportionate scores reflect an objective picture of the persistent mathematics achievement gap in America. The low statistics about student achievement are not a new phenomenon, as year after year, the academic performance metrics consistently show thousands of middle school students who are underperforming on the state mathematics exams. The statistics consistently highlight that most students who fail to meet the expected academic standards are African American, Latino and are from a low socioeconomic background (NYSED 2016). There have been numerous legislative reforms such as No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) enacted to try and close the achievement gap. According to Williams, Kirst, and Haertel (2010), the gap in middle school for mathematics gets wider, and this is concerning because middle school math is an indicator for success in high school, college, and beyond. Principals and their school communities search for instructional practices they can implement to increase student achievement with middle school math. This research study, Strategies Principals in New York City Public High-Needs Middle Schools Use to Increase Student Achievement in Mathematics, can be used to guide the work of improving student outcome in math. The research design for this study was quantitative and the instrument used was an electronic survey, that was emailed to middle school principals. There were 45 questions, the first 11 pertained to questions about the demographics of the principals; the other 34 questions were about math strategies principals should use to impact student achievement in mathematics. The sample size was 100 middle school principals, 73 of them responded. The data collected from the responses were analyzed using the statistical analysis software SPSS version 24. The findings of this study showed that the following practices when implemented by the principal had a significant association with student achievement: The principal hiring of effective Math Lead Teachers, students grappling with assignments that are common- core aligned and on the level of the state exams and teachers writing responsive lesson plans to address students’ misconceptions.

The aim was also to determine if there was a difference in students' and teachers' attitudes about the school community, specifically in rigorous instruction and collaborative teachers between schools that implemented PBL versus schools that did not. The last part of the investigation was to see if rigorous instruction, collaborative teachers, and PBL program predicted student achievement scores on the NYS math state test. The middle schools are randomly selected across two districts in New York City, receiving either math instruction through a traditional approach or the PBL method. The superintendent/deputy superintendent approved all schools using the PBL program. The instruments used for analysis include the 2019 Mathematics State assessment and the NYC DOE survey distributed to both the parents and teachers. The two instruments are archived data and are publicly available. The analysis was run on SPSS using the Mann-Whitney U-test and multiple regression. The results revealed a statistically significant difference in the mathematical scores and students' and teachers' perceptions of schools in the PBL and traditional groups. The schools in the PBL group had more incredible significant growth in scores and attitudes than the schools that implemented the conventional approach. Results also showed that collaborative teachers and rigorous instruction did not predict student achievement on the mathematics state assessment. However, the PBL practice did predict student achievement. This helps to show that authenticity, student voice & choice, reflection, critique & revision, and public presentation of projects can help improve student performance on the mathematics state assessments.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to investigate the intensity of social networking use, gender, and socioeconomic status as possible predictors of eighth grade at-risk middle school students’ math and science test scores. Because this study hypothesized a general linear model between an ordinal response variable and more than one explanatory variables, ordinal logistic regression analysis was used. Social media is pervasive in the daily lives of students and so it can have a possible deleterious influence on student achievement. This idea continues to animate practitioners, researchers, parents, and all others interested in the achievement and success of adolescents. The current study was carried out in an urban middle school in the MidAtlantic United States. A convenience sample of 68 students participated in the study by completing a survey using the SNAIS instrument to measure their intensity of social networking use. A test of the full model (with gender, SES, and SNAIS as the predictor variables) compared with a constant-only or null model showed no significant effect. These outcomes were explored based on the data analysis results. Some reasons for this apparently contradictory result are explored in the discussion, including the need to examine more accurate results of student achievement versus self-reported measures to ascertain the extent of potential errors in estimating achievement levels. The study suggests that the possible outcome of the hypothesized relationship between social media, social networking, and academic achievement are more complex than might be assumed. Further research is required to investigate the relationship between the hypothesized variables.

Book excerpt: A quantitative causal-comparative and correlation research studied Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) at a middle school in rural Georgia. The purpose was to determine if computerized math instruction, as measured by ALEKS, was more effective than traditional teacher instruction with students in math support in order to pass the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT). The study also explored the relationship among other variables: if the percentage of concepts a student completed in ALEKS affected student success on the CRCT, and if gender played a factor in achievement on the CRCT when enrolled in the ALEKS computer math support class. The math intervention used in this study, ALEKS, has been researched using college and high school students, but little research focused on the effectiveness of ALEKS with middle school students. All data collected was archival from the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years and included 294 total participants, of which 181 were enrolled in ALEKS for the entire year; 113 were enrolled in a traditional math support class for the entire year. The researcher analyzed two hypotheses in this study using a one-way ANCOVA and one hypothesis using a Pearson product-moment correlation. Results from this study revealed that ALEKS did not have a significant impact on CRCT test scores in the middle grades, yet there was a correlation to the percentage of ALEKS a student completed and the increase in that student's score on the CRCT. While there has been research conducted in this area, there is still room for more ALEKS research.

Studies have shown that it is during middle school, sixth to eighth grades, that mathematics and science education is most crucial. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (2009), in science, as grade level increased from fourth to eighth and then to twelfth, the number of students who scored at or above the basic level declined, as did the number of students who scored at or above the proficient level. In mathematics, U.S. eighth grade students ranked 15th in the world in math achievement, but ranked near the bottom of all industrialized nations by the time they are in high school. This study examined whether using STEM curriculum would impact state standardized test scores in mathematics and science for eighth grade students at a middle school located in the southern United States. The study followed a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group design and found there was no statistical significant difference between the two groups. Further study should be conducted to evaluate other units of the curriculum for a longer period of time as well as other curricula.
