Book Synopsis Drinking in Victorian and Edwardian Britain by : Thora Hands
Download or read book Drinking in Victorian and Edwardian Britain written by Thora Hands and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-18 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book surveys drinking in Britain between the Licensing Act of 1869 and the wartime regulations imposed on alcohol production and consumption after 1914. This was a period marked by the expansion of the drink industry and by increasingly restrictive licensing laws. Politics and commerce co-existed with moral and medical concerns about drunkenness and combined, these factors pushed alcohol consumers into the public spotlight. Through an analysis of public and private records, medical texts and sociological studies, the book investigates the reasons why Victorians and Edwardians consumed alcohol in the ways that they did and explores the ideas about alcohol that circulated in the period. This book shows that they had many reasons for purchasing and consuming alcoholic substances and these were driven by broader social, cultural, medical and commercial factors. Although drunkenness may have been the most visible consequence of alcohol consumption, it was not the only type of drinking behaviour. Alcohol played an important social role in the everyday lives of Victorians and Edwardians where its consumption held many different meanings.
Book Synopsis The History of Wine as a Medicine by : Philip Norrie
Download or read book The History of Wine as a Medicine written by Philip Norrie and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book is the first to describe mankind’s 5,000 year history of using wine as a medicine. Wine is our oldest, most documented and best preventative medicine. It reduces the rate of death from all causes by up to 50% by minimising vascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes by up to 50% and dementia by up to 80%. This text rewrites the history of wine by showing that the first grape wine was actually made in China and not Georgia, as current theory suggests. It contains a unique detailed chronology of wine as a medicine from 9,500 years ago in China until today. It also details some interesting stories about wine, such as its use to help keep convicts alive during their long voyage to Australia, its use in Australian lunatic asylums, Australia’s many ‘Wine Doctors’ such as Penfold and Lindeman, and the American Presidents who championed wine. The book also contains a chapter on one of the main health components of wine, namely resveratrol; written by Professor Joseph Maroon, the famous American neurosurgeon for the American NFL who is an expert on concussion injuries and a great advocate for the use of resveratrol to delay the aging process. It shows that the best way to absorb resveratrol is as a liquid via the buccal mucosa or lining of the mouth and not as pills or capsules. That is why it is best to swirl wine around in your mouth for a minute or two before swallowing it, to absorb more resveratrol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Gisela Kreglinger offers a fresh, holistic vision of the Christian life that sees God at work in all created things, including vineyards, the work of vintners, and the beauty of well-crafted wine shared with others around a table. Kreglinger begins by examining wine in the Bible, in the history of the church, and in the Lord’s Supper, and these reflections culminate in a theology of joy and feasting that celebrates the human senses as gifts for tasting the goodness of God. In the second part of the book Kreglinger brings Christian spirituality and the world of wine together in new ways, exploring such matters as technology and wine-crafting, the health benefits of wine, alcohol abuse, consumerism, and soul care. Her discussion is enriched by interviews with thirty vintners from around the world as well as her own experience growing up on a family winery in Bavaria.
