From as early as 1889, college football began to take hold of South Carolina. The fans of the state's first intercollegiate game could hardly have foreseen how it would steadily grow from a competition between amateurs into tightly organized teams with well-paid coaches and demanding alumni, all with a passionate desire to win. This volume goes beyond Clemson and Carolina to trace the history of college teams from all over the state, including Wofford, Furman, SC State, Presbyterian College, Erskine, Claflin, The Citadel, MUSC, the College of Charleston, Newberry College, Benedict College and Allen University. Join museum curator Fritz Hamer and longtime South Carolina high school football coach John Daye as they celebrate the state's most notable coaches, players and rivalries, as well as the many unsung heroes who have helped to make the sport a statewide obsession.

Founded in 1801 as South Carolina College, the University of South Carolina is one of the nation’s oldest public colleges. Located in the heart of downtown Columbia and bound by Sumter, Pendleton, Bull, and Greene Streets, this historic landscape, known today as the Horseshoe, has both endured and prospered through more than two centuries of South Carolina’s often-turbulent history. In On the Horseshoe: A Guide to the Historic Campus of the University of South Carolina, Elizabeth Cassidy West and Katharine Thompson Allen offer a comprehensive, up-to-date overview of the historic Horseshoe. So much more than just a walking tour of Carolina’s historic original campus, On the Horseshoe features a wealth of archival photographs and drawings dating back to the nineteenth century and also provides a close look at the Horseshoe’s structures as well as the men and women who lived, worked, and studied in them. A numbered map with corresponding descriptions locates more than two dozen structures on the original campus and includes the history of each one, the important events that took place there, and its current use. An accompanying Web site (www.sc.edu/horseshoe) provides additional information and images for those who wish to further their knowledge of the university’s history. Walter Edgar, Neuffer Professor of Southern Studies Emeritus and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at USC, provides a foreword. “Whether a native of Columbia, a South Carolina alumnus or a visitor to the Palmetto State, On the Horseshoe is a must-read for those interested in one of the most storied and historic facets of South Carolina’s capital city.” —John M. Sherrer III, Historic Columbia Foundation “Allen and West offer a well-researched and beautifully written narrative that highlights the physical and social histories of the campus. They seamlessly chronicle the construction of buildings, institutional traditions, the Civil War, slavery, Jim Crow, the civil rights movement, influential people, and ongoing memorialization efforts that showcase the rich and complex history of the university. This is an essential book for anyone interested in the University of South Carolina history, or southern history as a whole.” —Kelley Deetz, President’s Commission on Slavery and the University, University of Virginia

Book excerpt: College football is a massive enterprise in the United States, and southern teams dominate poll rankings and sports headlines while generating billions in revenue for public schools and private companies. Southern football fans worship their teams, often rearranging their personal lives in order to accommodate season schedules. The Origins of Southern College Football sheds new light on the South’s obsession with football and explores the sport’s beginnings below the Mason-Dixon Line in the decades after the Civil War. Military defeat followed by a long period of cultural unrest compelled many southerners to look to northern ideas and customs for guidance in rebuilding their beleaguered society. Ivy League universities, considered bastions of enlightenment and symbols of the modernizing spirit of the age, provided a particular source of inspiration for southerners in the form of organized or “scientific” football that featured standardized rules and scoring. Transported to the South by men educated at northern universities, scientific football reinforced cultural values that had existed in the region for centuries, among them a tolerance for violence, respect for martial displays, and support for traditional gender roles. The game also held the promise of a “New South” that its supporters hoped would transform the region into an industrial powerhouse. Students and townspeople alike embraced the new sport, which served as a source of pride for a region that lagged woefully behind its northern counterpart in terms of social equity and economic prowess. The Origins of Southern College Football is an entertaining history of the South’s most popular sport cast against a broader narrative of the United States during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, two momentous periods of change that gave rise to the game we recognize today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meet the coaches, athletes, and notable characters that laid the foundation for today's Gamecock Nation. The summer of 1971 was especially hot in Columbia and not just because of the weather. It was that year that a long-simmering conflict between the University of South Carolina and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) reached the point of boiling over. Frustrations over the ACC's recruiting and admission standards, and growing pressure from influential athletics director and head football coach Paul Dietzel, led the board of trustees to cast a vote in favor of leaving the conference that USC had helped to found eighteen years earlier. This vote would mark the beginning of a new independent era of Gamecock athletics, but few at the time could have imagined the resulting twenty-year odyssey. In A Gamecock Odyssey: University of South Carolina Sports in the Independent Era, Alan Piercy chronicles the significant events and describes the larger-than-life characters of the years following the university's departure from the ACC. The University of South Carolina experienced some of the highest highs and lowest lows in its athletics history. Tales of interpersonal clashes between football head coach Paul Dietzel and men's basketball head coach Frank McGuire; the rise and fall of women's basketball coach Pam Parsons; George Rogers and his magical Heisman Trophy–winning season; the birth of USC's beloved mascot, Cocky; and other USC sports stories converge, stirring feelings of amusement, nostalgia, and pride. With colorful storytelling and Gamecock pride, Piercy gives college sports fans a behind-the-scenes tour of these raucous decades. He explains how South Carolina's independent era tells the broader story of NCAA sports conference realignment, Title IX, the impact of the civil rights movement on college athletics, the evolution of college sports media coverage, and the development of college sports into a multi-billion-dollar business sustained by TV broadcast and licensing rights. A Gamecock Odyssey captures the spirit of the time and shows the reader how those years influenced today's Gamecock culture and national obsession with college athletics.

Book excerpt: The game of American Football is in its 144th year. The modern-day game of football took its present form about 100 years ago when the NCAA was formed. It is not my intention to give a history of the game, but to give you, my reader a glimpse into what life was like for a college football player at the University of South Carolina in the second half of the 1960s. The game of football is genius, and although there have been some minor rule changes, the game we played then, is the same game played today. Only the strategies have evolved along with the popularity of the sport. Life as a college football player in the 1960's did afford time for other endeavors and fun, so also within these pages are tales of fraternity life that are straight out of the movie "Animal House" and travel adventures that spanned this great country all the way to the 'Last Frontier'. The 60's were a time of generational and cultural transformation. We, as student athletes, were dealing with this transformation as was everyone else. In football at South Carolina, there was a major coaching change that complicated life at the same time. But we did come together as players and coaches and we accomplished something that had never been achieved before at South Carolina. The 1969 South Carolina Football team went undefeated in conference play and won the ACC Championship. I was fortunate to have played on the team. While life as a student-athlete wasn't always easy, I am grateful for the opportunity to compete as a Gamecock and to have received a stellar education. I am equally grateful for the people I have met along the way, many who have become lifelong friends. We were able to capture our first Conference Championship together and I think all of us-fans, coaches, staff and players, cherish those memories more each day. I feel certain that very soon, another team of South Carolina athletes, coaches and staff will not only win Conference Championships, but will create memories, they too can cherish for a lifetime. I hope you enjoy this journey from the gridiron at the University of South Carolina to the wilds of Southeastern Alaska almost as much as I did taking it. Go Cocks!
