Book excerpt: This study seeks to examine the manner and extent to which the United States' leading higher education institutions are adapting their undergraduate international studies and area studies degree programs to the realities of the post Cold War world. The study used data provided by a 1994 survey of nearly 800 undergraduate international and area studies degree programs and recommends steps to strengthen these programs and make them more responsive to the demands of the 21st Century. The study looked at a wide range of programs including 171 international studies degree programs and 102 degree programs focused on specific geographic areas of the world. Also included were case studies of 10 progressive programs that offer innovative curricula and teaching. Analysis found trends that show modest but significant alterations to undergraduate international studies and area studies curricula, robust growth in undergraduate international and area studies degree programs, and increases in the number of courses within disciplines and specializations and in student enrollments. Recommendations that arose from the findings include 22 suggestions for international and area studies programs, 3 recommendations for the higher education community, and 5 recommendations for further study. Appendixes contain a list of survey respondents, the survey instruments, a list of participants at a related workshop, and a selected bibliography. (Contains 70 references.) (JB)

Book excerpt: This report offers a descriptive and prescriptive discussion of changes under way at member schools of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA). It analyzes data provided by a 1994 survey of all 15 member schools on the manner and extent to which they are adapting their programs to better prepare their students to face new global challenges. Survey data are analyzed in terms of curricula, students, and faculty. The report recommends steps to make international affairs professional programs more responsive to the demands of the 21st century. Recommendations are presented in the areas of admissions policy, curricula, teaching methods, faculty, student services, campus relations, special programs, and the role of the APSIA. Descriptions of one sample curricular program at each APSIA member school are offered to demonstrate the breadth, depth, and capacity for innovation of the APSIA schools. Curricular topics include human rights, international business, international development, international economics, international environmental studies, international political economy, international public health, international security studies, midcareer professional programs, and science/technology/international affairs. Appendixes contain a copy of the survey form, a workshop agenda, and a bibliography of 69 items. (JDD)

Book excerpt: Crossing Borders helps students develop a framework for understanding the various disciplines that constitute international studies by exploring the many boundaries they knowingly (and unknowingly) cross on a daily basis. Renowned authors Harry I. Chernotsky and Heidi H. Hobbs address the diverse fields of international studies—geography, politics, economics, sociology, and anthropology—giving instructors a launching point to pursue their own disciplinary interests. This bestseller not only helps students to better grasp international affairs, but also offers advice on how they can engage with global issues through study abroad, internships, and career options. Updated thoroughly to reflect recent events and trends, the Fourth Edition assesses the COVID-19 pandemic; the use of social media to interfere in elections; the role of China in trade, investment, and finance; and the tensions surrounding persistent racial and gender inequities around the world. Book excerpt: Deploying interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives that speak to interconnected global dimensions is critical if one’s work is to remain relevant and applicable to the emerging global-scale issues of our time. The Global Turn is a guide for students and scholars across all areas of the social sciences and humanities who wish to embark upon global-studies research projects. The authors demonstrate how the global can be studied from a local perspective and vice versa. Global processes manifest at multiple transnational, regional, national, and local levels—interconnected dimensions that are mutually constitutive. This book walks the reader through the steps of thinking like a global scholar in theoretical, methodological, and practical terms, explaining the implications of global perspectives for research design.

If America is to reassert its moral legitimacy, Brzezinski argues, it must address its basic dilemmas, including deepening poverty, inadequate health care and education, a greedy wealthy class opposed to progressive taxation, and the mass media's promotion of sex and violence. In the new world of rival global power clusters, Brzezinski urges a greater role for the United Nations and "redistribution of responsibilities" within the trilateral nexus of Europe, America and East Asia (Publisher’s Weekly).
