Competitiveness in the Global Marketplace: Hearing Before the Subcommittee on Foreign Commerce and Tourism of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, United States Senate, One Hundred Third Congress, First Session, May 18, 1993 The subcommittee met, pursuant to notice, at 9:35 a.m., in room SR-253 of the Russell Senate Office Building, Hon. John F. Kerry (chairman of the subcommittee) presiding. Staff members assigned to this hearing Ivan A. Schlager, staff counsel, and Troy Cribb, professional staff member; and Kevin M. Dempsey, minority staff counsel. Opening Statement Of Senator Kerry Senator Kerry. The subcommittee of the Commerce Committee will come to order. We have an interesting morning planned and an opportunity to really get an overview, to do something that we do not always do here in the Senate in hearings; but to try to lay a record which explores an issue in some depth. And I am particularly grateful to the chairman of the committee. Senator Rollings, for supporting the subcommittee's efforts and this committee's efforts to proceed in this area. We have with us this morning the distinguished former Chairman of the Federal Reserve, the Honorable Paul Volcker, on our first panel. And I apologize to other panels, but his schedule is such that we need to listen to the chairman's comments and have a round of questioning and then get him back to New York, because he is off on a foreign excursion and we do need to keep the schedule there. The second panel consists of Dr. Lester Thurow who has testified before before this committee, and Mr. Clyde Prestowitz, the president of the Economic Strategy Institute. And then a third panel, Mr. William Spriggs of the Economic Policy Institute and Mr. Robert Houseman of the Center for International Environmental Law. Let me just say a few words as an opening statement in laymen's terms and then turn to the chairman if I may and then to my ranking member, Senator Gregg. The playing field of trade and the economic global marketplace has obviously changed and we hear a lot of rhetoric about it. And for the last few years, we have been dabbling with strategies and really trying to understand what is happening to us. Download or read book Freedom written by William B. Gamble and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-10-30 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization brings far more benefits to the U.S. economy than it takes away. In a timely response to books that fuel anxiety over globalization, William Gamble shows that both Europe and emerging economic powers like China and India have serious long-terms problems linked to their cultures, political structures, occasional instability, and state ownership of companies. These and other factors will eventually put a brake on the economic growth and manufacturing output of the Old World and hot emerging economies. As Gamble proves, American institutions, while imperfect, are stable, flexible, and dynamic—good news for U.S. workers and the economy overall. This book has the power to reframe the debate over immigration, protectionism, and trade imbalances. A steady stream of books, articles, and reports are ringing the death knell for American economic supremacy. The argument goes something like this: In a rapidly integrating global economy, technology and know-how travel at the speed of light, and nations with low-cost labor forces are replacing high-cost American workers in every industry. The next century will belong to China, India, a resurgent Russia, and other emerging regions. Hogwash, says Bill Gamble! Drawing from his research and many years in the trenches advising individual and institutional investors on legal, financial, political, and corporate issues, Gamble demonstrates that the forces of globalization are nothing new. Most important, as long as American institutions limit the power of interfering politicians and bureaucrats and protect free markets, the American economic system will guarantee resilience, competitiveness, and prosperity. The fundamental protections of property and free speech, a culture that promotes and rewards entrepreneurship, banking policies that make capital easily available, relative transparency in corporate accounting, universal access to education, and other elements, despite their flaws, are still more supportive of economic growth and wealth creation than can be found anywhere else. Through in-depth examples drawn from around the world and insights honed advising a diverse clientele, Gamble dispels common myths and misconceptions about American competitiveness and its future prospects. He also identifies potential threats to the U.S. system from within and assesses the ways in the U.S. ultimately stands benefit from the forces of globalization.

This book identifies U.S. industries and companies that were competitive during that period and highlights the management strategies and practices they used to compete successfully in the international marketplace. The basis for the results in this book came from the utilization of United Nations data available in its International Trade Statistics Yearbooks (1980-1994).

Download or read book Failure to Adjust written by Edward Alden and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Updated edition with a new foreword on the Trump administration's trade policy* The vast benefits promised by the supporters of globalization, and by their own government, have never materialized for many Americans. In Failure to Adjust Edward Alden provides a compelling history of the last four decades of US economic and trade policies that have left too many Americans unable to adapt to or compete in the current global marketplace. He tells the story of what went wrong and how to correct the course. Originally published on the eve of the 2016 presidential election, Alden’s book captured the zeitgeist that would propel Donald J. Trump to the presidency. In a new introduction to the paperback edition, Alden addresses the economic challenges now facing the Trump administration, and warns that economic disruption will continue to be among the most pressing issues facing the United States. If the failure to adjust continues, Alden predicts, the political disruptions of the future will be larger still.

Download or read book The competitiveness of the U.S. economy and the need for a long-term economic strategy written by Sebastian Gerlach and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-03-24 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,3, Free University of Berlin (John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies), course: US Economic Policy, language: English, abstract: Despite the actual recession and financial crisis, the USA is currently the most competitive economy in the world. Competitive strengths like innovation and business sophistication next to well-functioning markets keep the USA highly productive. They outweigh the competitive weaknesses of great macroeconomic imbalances and improvable institutions. The financial market is just a part of the whole picture. Although the global economic landscape changed dramatically, the rise of emerging markets like China pose no general threat to U.S. competitiveness, because it is not a zerosum game. But the superior competitive position is eroding. Forces from within the U.S. economy put the future U.S. competitiveness at great risk. Inconsistencies like a decreasing percentage of R&D-spending, the ignorance of regional industry clusters by the federal government, the low-quality education system, and ineffective regulation of markets, display piecemeal, uncoordinated policy decisions and the lack of a coherent economic strategy. The formulation and implementation of a longterm economic strategy is recommended, which addresses these inconsistencies in the short- to midterm, the enforcement of strengths and reduction of weaknesses in the long-term. Only if the USA is governed strategically, it could sustain its current superior competitive position.
