Book excerpt: This celebratory publication is an expression of deepest gratitude to Herta Nagl-Docekal. With this volume, colleagues, graduates and friends want to celebrate her collected philosophical works. Her entire life's work has been characterized by both humanitarian and humanist commitment: to seek the principles of justice in the co-existence of human beings, but that philosophy also provides the basic yardstick, to highlight distortions on recent theories. Her philosophical work is alive with the commitment to a philosophy which is compelled to seek the principles of greater justice and solidarity.

Book Synopsis Experiments in Freedom by : Anton Krueger
Download or read book Experiments in Freedom written by Anton Krueger and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-02 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments in Freedom examines ways in which identities have been represented in recent South African play texts published in English. It begins by exploring descriptions of identity from various philosophical, psychological and anthropological perspectives and elaborates ways in which drama is uniquely suited to represent—as well as to effect—transformations of identity. In exploring the fraught terrain of identity studies, the book examines a selection of play texts in terms of five different discourse of identity—gender, nationalism, ethnicity, syncretism and race. Instead of building a sustained thesis throughout his text, Krueger writes in short bursts about a multiplicity of topics, extending his explorations rhizomatically into the crevices of a new South African society loath to relinquish its stranglehold on the politics of identity.
Book Synopsis Capitalism and Freedom in African Political Philosophy by : Grivas Muchineripi Kayange
Download or read book Capitalism and Freedom in African Political Philosophy written by Grivas Muchineripi Kayange and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates ‘capitalism and freedom’—the guiding forces of many political systems—in African philosophy. It builds on classical and neoliberal capitalism rooted in private property and freedom, and argues for the presence of these elements in the traditional and modern African political systems. The author argues that while these elements are partly imported from Western capitalists, they are equally traceable in African traditional political systems. Kayange argues that African politics is marred by a conflict between embracing capitalism and freedom (individualism), on the one hand, and socialism founded on African communitarianism and communist ideas, on the other. This conflict has affected policy development and implementation, and has significantly contributed towards the socio-economic and ethical crises that are recurrent in most of the African countries.

Book Synopsis Freedom’s Dominion (Winner of the Pulitzer Prize) by : Jefferson Cowie
Download or read book Freedom’s Dominion (Winner of the Pulitzer Prize) written by Jefferson Cowie and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE IN HISTORY An "important, deeply affecting—and regrettably relevant" (New York Times) chronicle of a sinister idea of freedom: white Americans’ freedom to oppress others and their fight against the government that got in their way. American freedom is typically associated with the fight of the oppressed for a better world. But for centuries, whenever the federal government intervened on behalf of nonwhite people, many white Americans fought back in the name of freedom—their freedom to dominate others. In Freedom’s Dominion, historian Jefferson Cowie traces this complex saga by focusing on a quintessentially American place: Barbour County, Alabama, the ancestral home of political firebrand George Wallace. In a land shaped by settler colonialism and chattel slavery, white people weaponized freedom to seize Native lands, champion secession, overthrow Reconstruction, question the New Deal, and fight against the civil rights movement. A riveting history of the long-running clash between white people and federal authority, this book radically shifts our understanding of what freedom means in America.
Book Synopsis The Metaphysics of Self-realisation and Freedom by : Colin Tyler
Download or read book The Metaphysics of Self-realisation and Freedom written by Colin Tyler and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first part of Colin Tyler’s new critical assessment of the social and political thought of T.H. Green (1836–1882) explores the grounding that Green gives to liberal socialism. Tyler shows how, for Green, ultimately, personal self-realisation and freedom stem from the innate human drive to construct a bedrock of fundamental values and commitments that can define and give direction to the individual’s most valuable potentials and talents. This book is not only a significant contribution to British idealist scholarship. It highlights also the enduring philosophical and ethical resources of a social democratic tradition that remains one of the world’s most important social and political movements, and not least across Britain, Europe, North America, India and Australia. Dr Colin Tyler is Reader in Politics at the University of Hull and joint convenor of the Centre for British Idealism.
Book Synopsis A Scandalous Freedom by : Steve Brown
Download or read book A Scandalous Freedom written by Steve Brown and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-11-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reader’s delight, A Scandalous Freedom sometimes shocks with challenges to prevailing wisdom, but it follows up with compelling validations of our need to celebrate real, unstinted freedom in Christ. Christians do not trust freedom. As author Steve Brown explains in this brave new book, they prefer the security of rules and self-imposed boundaries, which they tend to inflict on other Christians. Brown asserts that real freedom means the freedom to be wrong as well as right. Christianity often calls us to live beyond the boundaries, bolstered by the assurance that we cannot fall beyond God’s love. Freedom is dangerous, but the alternative is worse—boxing ourselves up where we cannot celebrate our unique gifts and express our joy in Christ. Each of the book’s eleven chapters explores a common pharisaic, freedom-stifling tendency, then opens the door to the fresh air of a remedial liberty.
Book Synopsis Hegel, Marx, and the Necessity and Freedom Dialectic by : Russell Rockwell
Download or read book Hegel, Marx, and the Necessity and Freedom Dialectic written by Russell Rockwell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides close readings of primary texts to analyze the linkage between G.W.F. Hegel’s philosophy and Karl Marx’s critical social theory of necessity and freedom. This is important for three reasons: first, to understand the significance of the changing relationships of work, society, and critical social theory in the origins of Hegelian-Marxism in the US, as documented in the recently published correspondence between the Marxist-Humanist theoretician Raya Dunayevskaya and the critical theorist Herbert Marcuse; second, to identify the intersections of the Critical Theorists Jurgen Habermas’ and Marcuse’s influential reinterpretations of Marx’s “value theory” of economy and society that enables navigation of the changing relationships of the social and economic spheres in the last century, as developed in Marx’s Grundrisse; and, thirdly, to assess the potential of Moishe Postone’s renewal of Marx’s value theory, largely conceived by the notion of a necessity and freedom dialectic intrinsic to capitalism.
Book Synopsis Essays on Freedom of Action (Routledge Revivals) by : Ted Honderich
Download or read book Essays on Freedom of Action (Routledge Revivals) written by Ted Honderich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on Freedom of Action, first published in 1973, brings together original papers by contemporary British and American philosophers on questions which have long concerned philosophers and others: the question of whether persons are wholly a part of the natural world and their actions the necessary effects of causal processes, and the question of whether our actions are free, and such that we can be held responsible for them, even if they are the necessary effects of casual processes. This volume will be of interest not only to those who are primarily concerned with philosophy but also to students in those many other disciplines in which freedom and determinism arise as problems.
