Book Synopsis Growth and Allocation of Woody Biomass in Forest Trees Based on Environmental Conditions by : Luigi Todaro
Download or read book Growth and Allocation of Woody Biomass in Forest Trees Based on Environmental Conditions written by Luigi Todaro and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-04-23 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest ecosystems are important because of the key role in reducing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations by storing a large amount of carbon in biomass and soils. The relative amount of above-ground biomass allocated among different tree tissues is a functional indicator of forests’ health reflecting the material flow, the wood quality and the plant survival strategy. The way in which plants steer their photosynthetic product across their compartments is not fixed but likely vary over time, across growth economies and among species and, lastly, is influenced by plant size and climate, Obtaining a qualitative/quantitative understanding of the influence that these factors have in both growth and biomass allocation is of fundamental importance either in understanding plant ecology and evolution and into developing environmental policies and useful forest management practices to cope with future climate change.
Book Synopsis Ecological Silvicultural Systems by : Brian J. Palik
Download or read book Ecological Silvicultural Systems written by Brian J. Palik and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ECOLOGICAL SILVICULTURAL SYSTEMS Unleash the natural power and adaptability of forests with this cutting-edge guide For generations, silvicultural systems have focused largely on models whose primary objective is the production of timber, leading to drastically simplified forests with reduced ecological richness, diversity, and complexity. Ecological silviculture, by contrast, focuses on producing and maintaining forests with “all their parts”—, that is, with the diversity and flexibility to respond and adapt to global changes. Ecological silviculture seeks to emulate natural development models and sustain healthy forests serving multiple values and goals. Ecological Silvicultural Systems provides a comprehensive introduction to these approaches and their benefits tailored to diverse types of forests, designed for forest management professionals. It provides a series of exemplary models for ecological silviculture and surveys the resulting forest ecosystems. The result is a text that meets the needs of professionals in forestry and natural resource management with an eye towards sustaining healthy forest ecosystems, adapting them to climate change, protecting them from invasive species, and responding to changing market forces. Ecological Silvicultural Systems readers will also find: Detailed treatment of forest ecosystems in North America, Europe, South America, and Australia A broad field of contributors with decades of combined expertise on multiple continents Discussion of pine woodlands; temperate hardwood forests, boreal forests, temperate rainforests, and more Ecological Silvicultural Systems is a useful reference for professional foresters, wildlife habitat managers, restoration ecologists, and undergraduate and graduate students in any of these fields.

Book Synopsis Forest Vegetation Management for Conifer Production by : John Daniel Walstad
Download or read book Forest Vegetation Management for Conifer Production written by John Daniel Walstad and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1987 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing the work of an interdisciplinary team of 20 specialists, this text consolidates, for the first time, the information available on forest vegetation management and integrates this practice with other silvicultural considerations. It provides a conceptual framework as well as a database for improving forest vegetation management decisions. In an accurate and complete mannner, it quantifies opportunities for enhancing forest productivity, illustrates the value of vegetation management treatments in protecting forest resources and investments, outlines the concept of economic thresholds, highlights progress in establishing such limits and consolidates the information on treatment efficacy, advantages and disadvantages and tradeoffs involved. Forest managers will find it useful to evaluate silvicultural prescriptions and investment decisions; forest planners and resource specialists can use it as a reference source for preparing environmental impact assessments; and regulatory officials can use it to train and upgrade the skills of professionals.
Book Synopsis Seed Dissemination in Small Clearcuttings in North-central California by : Philip M. McDonald
Download or read book Seed Dissemination in Small Clearcuttings in North-central California written by Philip M. McDonald and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a 1964-1967 study on the Challenge Experimental Forest, seedfall was evaluated in 2-, 5-, and 10-acre circular clearcuttings. During the 4 years, 10 seed crops, ranging from light to bumper, were produced by ponderosa pine. white fir, Douglas-fir, and incense cedar. Seedfall ranged from 76 to 40,691 sound seed per acre (188 to 100,547/ha) for a single species in a given year. From 89 to 100 percent of each species' seed fell within an area 1 1/2 times the height of the average dominant tree. Overall, seed distribution was highly variable.
