I have no apology to offer for the easy, familiar style in which they are written, nor for the use of the first person. Such a direct and personal appeal was unavoidable in a real letter, and the attempt to eliminate it for publication would, I felt, destroy much of the spontaneity of the originals. These letters were written as a supplement to text-book work on the part of the pupil. I found that such work was for the most part mere skeleton work, facts of date and birth, and catalogues of work accomplished. This skeleton work I tried to fill in with vital facts, living flesh and blood, gleaned from a wider reading.
