The infrequency of these cases increases the responsibility of the practitioner. It is important that he inform himself of these tumors. My object in this monograph is, first of all, to assist the physician in determining in a given case what form of new growth is present and what is its best treatment. The second aim of this monograph is to make vivid the picture of each tumor of the jaw by statistical story and by case history, so that the physician may recognize the new growths of the jaws in their early stages. In American medical literature no complete description of the growths of the jaws exists. Christopher Heath's book upon Injuries and Diseases of the Jaws illustrates the case method of teaching an unfamiliar subject. It is a valuable contribution. Perthes, of the University of Leipzig, in a monograph published as a volume of the Deutsche Chirurgie in 1907, has contributed to German medical literature the best upon this important subject. The microbic origin of tumors is briefly disposed of, as it has not been established by any convincing experimental investigations or clinical observations. Should future research demonstrate a direct causative relationship between certain as yet unknown bacteria and the growth of some of the tumors, such tumors would have to be eliminated from this group of pathological products and be classified with the granulomata. The first part of this treatise is devoted to a general consideration of tumors, and it is this part which is intended more especially for the use of students. Following the section on Classification, each class of tumors is considered separately, beginning with benign epithelial tumors and terminating with sarcoma, to which is appended a section on Retention - cysts. It will be observed that by following this course each tumor is brought to the notice of the reader three different times. Repetitions like these cannot fail in permanently impressing the sub ject upon the memory of the reader. It has been deemed advisable to discuss benign tumors first, as they do not deviate so far from the normal type of tissue-growth as do malignant tumors of the Same germinal layer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tumors, Innocent and Malignant: Their Clinical Characters and Appropriate Treatment Twenty years ago our knowledge of malignant tumours was unsatisfactory, especially in relation to the Cancer group. The description of cancer (or carcinoma) was founded on a study of this disease as it appears in the breast. It was not possible to write a satisfactory account of malignant disease occurring in organs like the kidney, uterus, thyroid gland, ovary or testicle. The clinical features and the modes of death not only vary according to the organ attacked, but are modified by the environment of the cancerous organ. The enterprises of surgeons were limited until accurate information was forthcoming in regard to these matters, for a knowledge of the pathology of malignant growths is of prime importance to those engaged in the operative treatment of these diseases. Since the first appearance of this book (1893) a large amount of investigation has been carried out in relation to cancer of individual organs. The frequency with which it arises in the gall-bladder has come as a surprise to physicians as well as to surgeons. Another new thing is the discovery that the Fallopian tube is liable to be the seat of primary cancer. Among more recent additions to our knowledge of cancer is the recognition of the fact that cancer of the ovary is due to implantation of cancerous particles shed from a primary focus in the breast, the colon, the stomach, or the gall-bladder, or poured out from the open mouth of a cancerous Fallopian tube. Information on these things, as well as much new matter bearing on the cancer problem, is incorporated in this edition.
