Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trials of the Heart Many characters in these and in her former writings (though introduced under fictitious names and events) have had living models, from which she has painted with freedom; but still, she trusts, without any unworthy or ungenerous motives. And she has sometimes been amused by the obser vations of critics, who have not unfrequently ascribed to fancy a sketch that was made from real life, and, vice verse'i, have pronounced to be facts and no fictions the coinages of her own brain. The truth is, and the experience of many years of author ship fully warrants her venturin to make the observation, that where an author takes trut as a basis for fiction, and mingles his own observations of nature, and the feelings of his own heart, with the creations of his fanc it is not easyto trace the line of demarcation, or to detect t e precise bounds where truth ends and fiction begins. If it were otherwise, the writer would be but a mere bungler in his craft, and would produce but an awkward piece of patchwork at the best. Nor is it any dis ar ement to the judgment acumen of a critic that he s ould be at fault under circumstances, and therefore sometimes fall into error; since those who aint from nature must, of necessity, frequenti have to deal) with marvellous inconsistencies; sometimes wi such as would never have entered into the brain of the novelist in his wildest imaginings nature herself alone presentin such fantastic stores in her inexhaustible combinations of g and bad, of the great and the little, the noble and the mean, the sane and the insane (for there are more mad people in the world than can with expediency be placed under whole some discipline for the recovery of their reason), in all the orders, classes, and degrees of the great family of mankind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ellen Parry, or Trials of the Heart How glad I am, said one of them, to escape from that warm dining-room, and that tedious dinner. And, Caroline, what do you say to one more aim at the bull's eye'.l If I should hit it a third time, I shall feel my success certain to-mor row. The bows and arrows are in the oriel window in the hall, Edward, get them for us; and then help us to jump down the haha. I never go through a gate, you know, when I have a choice between that and climbing a fence or a stone wall. I'll get your bows and arrows willingly, but the sun is just beginning to dip behind the hill, and in the twilight you are much more likely to hit wider of your mark than you have before, than to strike the bull's eye. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Tribulation, or the Blessing of Trials Only He who made our hearts fully understands them; and no one but the Son of man who is the Son of God can be touched with the feeling of all our infirmi ties, having been in all points tried as we have been tried. But whoever has had any experience of trials, suffering, sorrow, bereavement, and has been divinely helped to profit by that experience, can hope to be of service in words of sympathy to those similarly tried and troubled. It is the heart which bleeds with its own sorrows which can go out in living sympathy toward another bleeding heart; and it is the hearts that have gained comfort from the God of all comfort that can speak comforting words to others who are in any affliction, out of the comfort wherewith they them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Well, whatever he had done, his conscience was clean; no body should argue him out of that. Hadn't he had time to think it over, to think it all out? Weeks and weeks in gaol? And now he was to come to trial. To-day. Well, he would tell them. Broido had de served it, he had deserved all he got, the dirty swine that he had turned out to be. His friend, yet all the time a dirty swine. What could they do to a blind man? It was an accident, how could it be anything else? They must see that. Of course he hadn't meant to do him in. 'mad? No, I wasn't mad, he said, unless something in me was. Some swift ferocity, uncontrollable. He hadn't meant to do him in. He had told them the truth, he would tell the judge the truth to-day. Per haps the judge would only send him back to the workshop. But if he didn't? Well, what was the dif ference, he said in his hopelessness, between prison and workshop for a blind man? Very little. No, a lot. He would be cut off from voices, nobody to listen to, nobody to talk to, not even Broido. Broido his friend. No voices in the. Prison, no sounds of any sort. He would have nothing. He would just be able to make out where the window was, he could make out where the window was now by standing under it and turn ing his face up to the light - he supposed there were bars across the window. Funny having bars across the window and locking the door to keep a blind man in. Funny locking doors on anyone, one man lock-ing a door on another. No, the Workshop would be much better; he Would hear the men talking, Richards, Meiring, even Broido. Surely the judge would send him back. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classics of the Bar: Stories of the World's Great Jury Trials and a Compilation of Forensic Masterpieces The orator is there with a spontaneous outburst of a passionate soul appealing to the reason and emotion of man for the vindication of law and innocence and the triumph of truth and justice. The oratory of the bar is, for the most part, neces sarily extemporaneous. Not prepared in advance and seldom reported stenographically, many of the court room classics have been lost to the world. And yet, from the dawn of history, the forensic orator has held the world captive at his will - spellbound under the magnetic influence of a master mind. Ah, how often has he of honest, loyal heart, brilliant intellect, intense passion, fervid imagination, and fluent voice held and swayed the minds and hearts of men! Fortunately, not all of the masterpieces of the bar have been lost. Some manuscript yet is here and some notes have been preserved. Providence has not been unkind. Fate has not yet decreed that the hand of de struction should touch them all. Finding the ones that have been saved has been my joyous task. It has been no easy one, but it has not been a labor of pain. It has proven interesting, instructive, fascinating. Charles was not so passionately in love with her as he had been but he was still as strongly attached to her, as it was in his nature to be to any thing he had called his own for two years. But she discovered, when too late, that she had joined her fate with one, of a character, which, of all others (not disgraced by any flagrant vice) is that most calculated to give pain to those connected with it. An austere, or a violent, or a passionate temper, may be accessible, and very com mouly is, on the side of sensibility and virtue but nothing good is within the reach of an unthinking mind. The spirits that would always be gay, always be plunged in a vortex of dissipation, in a world where, on every side, objects for reflection solicit our attention, and seem to intreat our considera tion, present the most hopeless of materials for the reformist to work upon.
