Some are grounded in the author's sense of the biblical present, others in the author's or an imagined speaker's present; all are accompanied by a triggering Scripture reference to provide background for the curious or a focus for further reflection. As stated in the author's preface, "These are poems, not doctrinal or evangelistic treatises. Their task . . . is to work and wear well as poems."

The heart plummets. The mind shrills. We blame genetics. Toxins. Lifestyle. How can we not blame ourselves? Can this be thrown on God? If we listen to the emptiness behind every unanswered why, what will we hear? While life and death circle overhead, heckle and intimidate, exhausting faith, these poems talk with touchstones around us. Eavesdrop on whispers for answers. These poems explore what we have--and what's left. Who made the hawk? And the lionhearted songbird? What do they tell us about courage? What else is present?

Speaking in a variety of voices—from a young mother mourning her own mother to Penelope, wife of Ulysses, Persephone, and Theoderic the Ostrogoth—Ponds is a polyphonous meditation on loss and gain, activity and stillness, and the nature of God, both hidden and revealed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: O’Neill’s Original Grace provides a fresh analysis of biblical texts and explores the rich tradition and development of Marian devotion, liturgical prayer, artwork, and dogma. It invites the reader to discover how our capacity for biblical and theological understanding matures over time, correcting our perception of Mary, the second Eve and the mother of Jesus the Christ, and of the place and role of women in church and society. This exhilarating book reveals the benefit that courageous questioning can bring to the church’s self-understanding and to the vital relationships between women and men. In it we gently discover that a wise and good God is our Creator, affirming us in our gendered humanity, still slowly teaching us what went on in Eden, in Nazareth, and on Calvary.

And yet, the house speaks of secrets no one else will. Wild creatures weigh in: a muskrat, fireflies, snails, a vesper bat. The menacing garfish. Troubled parents take on repairs: clanking radiators, crumbling plaster, and beloved Uncle Dunkel, finally home from the war in Korea, his mind splintering. Over three years, lived in the moment by Larkin—and relived in hindsight by Eldergirl—doors open and truth, long-stifled, emerges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two excerpts from spirituals, offered as epigraphs, foreshadow themes in Soon Done with the Crosses. The first song, "One of These Days," suggests inevitable burdens that all of us must bear at some point, while the second song, "Do Lord," supposes a glorious reward for those who faithfully endure. The poems in this book form a catalog of varied trials--both historical and contemporary--drawn from art, imaginings, the natural world, and aspects of the human condition, coupled with questions about eternity. Though while the collection begins with pleas for some bright assurance, it concludes in yet another vigil through dark, lonely hours, longing for morning's clarifying light.

The opening section of the book, entitled Canticle of Want, introduces the collection’s governing characteristic: these poems want a lot. They ask us to view our damaged planet and acknowledge our complicity; to question “how it is we have come to this” and take heart in our wish to be more worthy; to accept suffering and loss and yet feel gratitude, expect joy. In short, these poems aspire to “teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Book excerpt: Temple Mount is believed by some Jews to be the locus of their ancient Temple. Known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary), this site is home to two mosques, one of which is the third most holy shrine in all of Islam. Jewish fundamentalists want to destroy the mosques on Temple Mount and rebuild the Temple. Christian apocalypticists are financing and supporting their efforts. If the mosques are destroyed, Islamic fundamentalists have vowed to destroy Israel, resulting in the possibility of nuclear war. This book addresses the idea that the recent rise of militant Christian, Jewish, and Muslim fundamentalisms and their interaction are endangering peace in the Middle East. It fully examines the thesis that apocalypticist fundamentalists--Christians in America, Jews in Israel and America--are working together to hasten the coming of the Messiah by instigating a Holy War in the Middle East. Several chapters focus on three U.S. political figures--Jerry Falwell, Ronald Reagan, and Pat Robertson--who helped bring Christian fundamentalism into the mainstream of American politics. One chapter tells of Jewish preparations for rebuilding the Temple on Temple Mount. Other chapters document the rise of religious fundamentalism in Israel since 1967, Haram al-Sharif-Temple Mount crises involving Christian-Jewish cooperation, and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. Separate chapters are devoted to Israel's nuclear program and political psychology, and the fact that nuclear weapons are leaving Russia and finding their way to Islamic nations and Islamic terrorists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While sitting in the authors home, ones first impression is that of an overwhelming sense this lady is eccentric in her nature. But, that is just a part of her charm. As you look around her surroundings, you see trophies, awards and ribbons of an era gone by, when she was and still is an artist, sculptor, poet and writer, lining her shelves and walls. She appears quiet, even soulful, but as conversation continues, in the blink of an eye can become animated and childlike. Just in her 70s, this author resides in the deep, deep waters of Jesus Christ, from a Jewish prospective. In this, her fourth book: A Cacophony of Treasured Finds, she takes you down pathes way less traveled, in Scripture, and writes of subjects most leaders will not touch on. Maybe because they are more comfortable sipping the milk of the Word of God, or, have not yet had an opportunity to delve into, and study the deepness of the Word, and teach of these hidden truths. Maybe, out of fear? Fear they might loose their congregation? Fear they cannot or will not want to get off the milk of the Word? Or, perhaps, its the money they will lose if they get into the meat of the Word and loose half, or more of their congregation? This bold look at the Holy Scriptures takes you into a deeper level of Scripture and gives a whole different perspective than you are used to, and one where you are a spectator, looking on, at the subjects being written about. The authors book, this time, can be viewed as a workbook, having places sporadically for your notes. A study book for home or church gatherings, or just a wonderful learning-tool for yourself or your family as well. Finally! A book rich in content that will deepen your walk with our Lord Savior, Jesus. Giving you fresh insights, viewpoints, at the turn of every page, comparing them with Scripture from your very own Bible. Thank you, DeNyse Practical, well written, chock-full of insight and wisdom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have now seen that the Sceptre had departed from Judah. The whole country was subject to the Romans, who had appointed Herod to govern it for them; and the time was now come when the blessed promises, that "the seed of the woman should bruise the serpent's head," and that "in the seed of Abraham all nations of the earth should be blessed," were to be fulfilled by the coming of the Messiah, the Son of God, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer; born of a woman, that thus being as Man upon the earth, He might suffer for man, and make that atonement for man, which He could only make because He was the Son of God. Unless the Messiah had been at once God and Man, He could have been no Saviour for man; no mediator between a holy God and His sinful creatures. Very soon after the death of Herod's sons, Alexander and Aristobulus, the last princes of the Asmonean family, the wonderful events related in the New Testament began to take place. No doubt we are all well acquainted with the story of the priest Zacharias, a good and holy man, who, whilst performing his duty in the house of God, saw an Angel standing on the right side of the altar of incense. Zacharias was an old man, and his wife Elisabeth was also an old woman, and therefore when the Angel told him that the Lord would work as great a miracle as He had done in Abraham's case, and give a son to Elisabeth, as He had given Isaac to Sarah, Zacharias must indeed have been greatly astonished. The Angel moreover told Zacharias, that this child, whom God would give him, was to be named John; and that he should be in an especial manner guided and protected by the Holy Spirit, for that he was to be the messenger spoken of by prophets, as sent to prepare the way for the Messiah, and give notice of His coming. Such particulars should have overcome any doubts which Zacharias might at the first moment have felt; but his faith failed him, and therefore, considering only the impossibility of such an event happening without the special interposition of the Lord, he, guided by sight and not by faith, presumed to ask for some sign, to assure him that what the Angel spake would really come to pass. This sinful unbelief was punished, even whilst his faithless request was granted; for Zacharias immediately lost the power of speaking, and remained speechless for many months: but his unbelief was gone, and he certainly made his wife Elisabeth acquainted with the promises and directions spoken by the Angel. About six months after this appearance of the Angel Gabriel to Zacharias, He "was sent from God, unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary." The Angel told Mary, that she had been chosen by the Almighty to be the mother of the promised Messiah, whose birth was to be a miracle; inasmuch as He would have no earthly father, but should be called the Son of God. Gabriel also told Mary, that when she had brought forth her son, she should call His name Jesus; that is, a Saviour. Mary was greatly troubled when the Angel first spake to her, and when she expressed her wonder and astonishment, He comforted her, and told her that her cousin Elisabeth, the wife of Zacharias, was also about to become a mother; adding, "For with God nothing shall be impossible." Mary's faith now showed itself, and she said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." Meaning that she was willing to serve the Lord in everything, and suffer whatever might come upon her in consequence. For, as she had no husband whom she could name as the father of her Child, she was liable to punishment. When Joseph, to whom Mary was espoused, or promised in marriage, found that she would have a Son, he was astonished, and had some thoughts of putting her away from being his wife; but being a just, or good and kind man, he meant to do this quietly and secretly, or "privily," so as not to expose Mary to blame or punishment. But while he thought on these things, behold the Angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, and told him not to fear about taking Mary to be his wife, for that the Holy Spirit had worked a great miracle, and that Mary was to be the mother of the promised Messiah; and as the Angel had said to Mary herself, so He now repeated to Joseph, "she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus; for He shall save His people from their sins." Then all Joseph's doubts and fears were at an end: he did as the Angel bade him, and thus was looked upon by men as the father of Mary's holy Son, who had in truth no Father but God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the transition between childhood and adulthood, there is a journey that all human beings must undertake in order to discover the essence of change. The novelette Redemption explores the very shadowy region wherein one’s identity is replaced by elements unfamiliar, mysterious, and alluring to the consciousness of oneself, where the shedding of pseudo security is replaced by the perplexity of instinctual discovery. Existence begins in the middle of a great dilemma that serves as the driving force of the two-act play, Sanctus. Three castoffs fall into a verbal battle of wits as they struggle to find the purpose behind their desolation. In exchanges of dialogue that consist of absurdity and pathos, each character combats one another with unique interpretations of the crisis at hand in order to reach the sound conclusion: Does death involve rebirth?
