Book Synopsis Treatise on Physiological Optics, Volume III by : Hermann von Helmholtz
Download or read book Treatise on Physiological Optics, Volume III written by Hermann von Helmholtz and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important work ever produced in the field of physiological optics, this classic is a model of scientific method and logical procedure, and it remains unmatched in its thorough and accessible approach. This is the third in a three-volume republication of the definitive English translation of Handbuch der Physiologischen Optik, originally published by The Optical Society of America in 1924 and containing everything that was known about physiological optics up until that time. The substratum consists of the data that Helmholtz furnished in the two nineteenth-century German editions that appeared during his lifetime. These volumes also contain extensive supplementary matter that Nagel, Gullstrand, and Kries incorporated in the third German edition of 1911, as well as significant new material prepared for the 1924 English translation by C. Ladd-Franklin, Gullstrand, and Kries, with copious annotations by James P. C. Southall that brought the work up to date with current research. Volumes I and II discuss the dioptrics of the eye and the sensations of vision;Volume III examines the perceptions of vision. Its topics include eye movements; the monocular field of vision; direction of vision; perception of depth; binocular vision; and many other highly important topics. Appendixes cover later findings on spatial configuration in vision and the theory of binocular instruments. Indexes for all three volumes are organized by subject and author.

Book excerpt: The most important work ever produced in the field of physiological optics, this classic is a model of scientific method and logical procedure, and it remains unmatched in its thorough and accessible approach. This is the second in a three-volume republication of the definitive English translation of Handbuch der Physiologischen Optik, originally published by The Optical Society of America in 1924 and containing everything that was known about physiological optics up until that time. The substratum consists of the data that Helmholtz furnished in the two nineteenth-century German editions that appeared during his lifetime. The first volume in this series explores the dioptrics of the eye; Volume II examines the sensations of vision, including stimulation by light; simple and compound colors; intensity and duration of sensation of light; and variations of sensitivity and contrast. Appendixes cover later findings on adaptation, twilight vision, and the duplicity theory; normal and anomalous color systems and theories of vision; and the nature of color sensations. The succeeding volume considers perceptions of vision.

Book Synopsis Physiological Optics by : Y. LeGrand
Download or read book Physiological Optics written by Y. LeGrand and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a translation by Professor Sami El Hage of Volume I of Le Grand's three-volume treatise on physiological optics. It is the last of the three volumes to be translated into English. Le Grand's second volume was translated into English by Hunt, Walsh and Hunt and published in 1957 under the title Light, Colour and Vision. His third volume was translated into English by Millodot and Heath in 1966 and published under the title Form and Space Vision. Although Le Grand's three volumes have been compared to the three volumes of Helmholtz, it is important to note that Le Grand has distributed differently the topics in his three volumes. This book is a mixture of the tradition established by Helmholtz and followed by Tscherning and Sheard with the tradition originated by Danders and followed by Landolt and Laurance and others. Helmholtz's first volume was concerned with the image forming structure of the eye, almost without reference to practical problems of examining patients and fitting them with glasses. It dealt with the problems of a single eye.

Book excerpt: Mark Platts is responsible for the first systematic presentation of truth-conditional semantics and for turning a generation of philosophers on to the Davidsonian program. He is also a pioneer in discussions of moral realism, and has made important contributions to bioethics, the philosophy of human rights and moral responsibility. This book is a tribute to Platts’s pioneering work in these areas, featuring contributions from number of leading scholars of his work from the US, UK and Mexico. It features replies to the individual essays from Platts, as well as a concluding chapter reflecting on his philosophical career from Oxford to Mexico City. Mind, Language and Morality will be of interest to philosophers across a wide range of areas, including ethics, moral psychology, philosophy of law, and philosophy of language.

Their contributions freely discuss its unity and reality, its compatibility with the orders of classical philosophy (present, past and future) and with the disputed idea of free will (Volume 1). They also present a detailed and updated state of the role of Time in the so-called exact sciences: biology — or more precisely genetics, evolution, neurosciences, natural and artificial intelligence (Volume 2) , and physics — relativity, quantum mechanics and quantum gravity, and cosmology (Volume 3).

Book Synopsis Visual Optics and the Optical Space Sense by : Hugh Davson
Download or read book Visual Optics and the Optical Space Sense written by Hugh Davson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eye, Volume 4: Visual Optics and the Optical Space Sense provides a well-integrated and authoritative account of the physiology of the eye. The book is organized into two parts. Part I on visual optics begins with a discussion of the branches of optics and the basic principles of geometrical optics. This is followed by separate chapters on refraction at plane and spherical surfaces; the thin spherical lens in air; reflexion at plane and spherical surfaces; the astigmatic lens; aberrations of optical images; ametropia and its correction; and retinoscopy and ophthalmoscopy. Part II on the optical space sense includes discusses of objective and subjective space; spatial localization according to direction; perception of distance and of size; spatial localization through binocular vision; special topics in binocular spatial localization; and ocular dominance and binocular retinal rivalry. Whilst the emphasis has been on readability rather than exhaustiveness, the various accounts are sufficiently well documented to make the treatise valuable not only to teachers in physiology, psychology and ophthalmology, but also to research workers in all branches of ocular physiology.
Book Synopsis Perception and Illusion by : N.J. Wade
Download or read book Perception and Illusion written by N.J. Wade and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our contact with the world is through perception, and therefore the study of the process is of obvious importance and signi?cance. For much of its long history, the study of perception has been con?ned to natural- tic observation. Nonetheless, the phenomena considered worthy of note have not been those that nurture our survival—the veridical features of perception—but the oddities or departures from the common and c- monplace accuracies of perception. With the move from the natural world to the laboratory the oddities of perception multiplied, and they received ever more detailed scrutiny. My general intention is to examine the interpretations of the perc- tual process and its errors throughout history. The emphasis on errors of perception might appear to be a narrow approach, but in fact it enc- passes virtually all perceptual research from the ancients until the present. The constancies of perception have been taken for granted whereas - partures from constancies (errors or illusions) have fostered fascination.
Book Synopsis Foundations of Perception by : George Mather

All the major and minor senses are covered, not only examining them from a perceptual perspective but also taking into account their biological and physical context. In addition to covering all material essential to understanding the functioning of the senses, each chapter also includes a 'Tutorials' section. This provides an opportunity for more advanced students to explore supplementary information on recent or controversial developments in subjects such as: The physics and biology of audition ; Shape and object perception ; Individual differences in perception.
