Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life and Times of Albert Capo reveals the social, economic, and cultural atmosphere that existed during the latter two-thirds of the twentieth century. the immigrant population that lived through the Great Depression of the 1930s faced many challenges, the least of which was learning a new language as they slowly integrated themselves into American society. Most boys Albert's age did not encounter the peculiar situations or problems that confronted Albert. the streets of New York were Albert's playground during his formative years, as it was for most boys living in ethnic conclaves throughout the city. Living through the Depression and prewar years gave Albert a unique perspective on the rapid change in American society. the American landscape looked quite different prior to the nineteenth century; there were no electric illumination of homes, no telephones, radios, TVs, automobiles, or central heating of homes. the importance of the twentieth century cannot be overestimated. the folks who lived through the twentieth century witnessed more technological advancements, inventions, and discoveries than the entire past history of mankind. Along with scientific discoveries was the fight for civil rights for women as well as minorities, two world wars, the development of nuclear energy and the atomic bomb, the Korean and Vietnam wars, and the conquest of outer space by landing a man on the moon. It would take many volumes to describe that which has advanced the cause of civilization during the past one hundred years; and it would stagger the imagination to ponder the vicissitudes of technology for the next one hundred years and mdash;if we don't destroy ourselves in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Award-Winning Historian Dramatically Re-Creates a Turning Point of the Civil War It was one of the most startling events of the civil war, the "hour of destiny" for the Union. Faced with the prospect of catastrophic defeat, the North's greatest generals--Ulysses Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, George Thomas, and Phil Sheridan--were commanding a battle for the besieged city of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Suddenly, as an aghast Grant and Thomas watched, the beleaguered federal troops began a headlong, climactic, seemingly suicidal charge up the face of a six-hundred-foot-high mountain ridge overlooking the city, under ferocious fire from the Confederate infantry that held the ridge. The siege of Chattanooga and its stuffing turnabout form the core of Wiley Sword's lively narrative. Dozens of previously unpublished photographs, maps, and excepts from private journals, and letters enhance this vivid account. Written with novelistic flair and a historian's authority, Mountains Touched with Fire captures every side of this crucial Civil War battle whose aftermath sealed the fate of the South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queensland’s tropics provide numerous environments for enjoyable walking: lush rainforests, cloud-shrouded mountains, extinct volcanoes, savanna woodlands, and magnificent beaches on the coast and Great Barrier Reef islands. This book brings together more than 150 of the best walks, tracks or trails in Queensland’s tropics, located within the coastal strip between Rockhampton and Cooktown. Walks vary from short boardwalk strolls in the lowland rainforests of Daintree National Park to 4-6 day hiking and camping trips on Hinchinbrook Island. Other routes follow old gold miners’ and forestry tracks or coaching routes or feature historical sites, rivers, lagoons, geological and geographical formations or much earlier Aboriginal communication tracks where Dreamtime stories add a further dimension. Man-made environments of abandoned gold towns, heritage riverfronts, Art Deco streetscapes and Second World War installations also feature. Most routes are best completed during the ‘Dry’ season (May to October) and walked by moderately fit individuals. Most do not require specialist navigation or bushcraft skills. Walks, Tracks and Trails of Queensland’s Tropics highlights the best the region has to offer. Easy-to-interpret maps are included to help you navigate, and the book’s size makes it convenient to carry in the backpack.

Book excerpt: The home my family occupied after we moved to Kingston was situated along the route taken by dignitaries on their way to Jamaica House, the Prime Minister's official residence. As a result of this fortuitous bit of luck, we never had to join the throng at the airport eagerly awaiting Queen Elizabeth, Emperor Haile Selassie or other important visitors to our island; we merely had to wait by our gate for the motorcade and wave furiously as they drove by, escorted by the police and a line of other official cars. I was a teenager then and although the excitement was undeniable, other issues held my attention. Jamaica was changing, an independent country gradually shedding the mantle of colonialism and on the cusp of forging a new identity. The Black Green and Gold was everywhere along with a sense of pride and all the possibilities the future held and I needed to find my place in this new country. Little did I know then how much my life would change, that in time I would be a part of that inner circle greeting official guests to Jamaica and meeting with the Prime Minister at his residence. This then is my story, written not only as an observer but an active participant in events of the still unfolding tale that is Jamaica. To my humble parents who without treasure gave the best they had to give, a love that has solidified the bond between their children; to my wife and sons and finally to the men and women of the Jamaica Defense Force with whom I served proudly for more than half of my life. And to the active soldiers and reservists who continue to serve in this their finest calling, to defend the honor of their country.
