Book excerpt: Valerie Tagwira has a gift for capturing the mood of a social or political moment: its concerns, unease, compromises and hopes. So it is with her second novel, Trapped. Trapped explores the lives of three characters: Unesu is a doctor, Cashleen trained as a journalist and Delta qualified as a chemical engineer. Unesu is employed, but his work exposes him to the deficiencies in the system every day as he faces the challenges of life and death. Each of the two young women, good friends, daunted by having their job applications repeatedly rejected, make moral and ethical compromises in order to find work, or at least an income that will pay their bills. These three individuals provide the pivot around which the action unfolds, introducing the reader to people and situations that paint a vital picture of life in Harare at a time of crisis, when survival depends on courage, determination, friendship and humour.

Book excerpt: The first English-language publication of a major history of the Great Lakes region of Africa. Though the genocide of 1994 catapulted Rwanda onto the international stage, English-language historical accounts of the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa--which encompasses Burundi, eastern Congo, Rwanda, western Tanzania, and Uganda--are scarce. Drawing on colonial archives, oral tradition, archeological discoveries, anthropologic and linguistic studies, and his thirty years of scholarship, Jean-Pierre Chr tien offers a major synthesis of the history of the region, one still plagued by extremely violent wars. This translation brings the work of a leading French historian to an English-speaking audience for the first time. Chr tien retraces the human settlement and the formation of kingdoms around the sources of the Nile, which were "discovered" by European explorers around 1860. He describes these kingdoms' complex social and political organization and analyzes how German, British, and Belgian colonizers not only transformed and exploited the existing power structures, but also projected their own racial categories onto them. Finally, he shows how the independent states of the postcolonial era, in particular Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda, have been trapped by their colonial and precolonial legacies, especially by the racial rewriting of the latter by the former. Today, argues Chr tien, the Great Lakes of Africa is a crucial region for historical research--not only because its history is fascinating but also because the tragedies of its present are very much a function of the political manipulations of its past.

What Carla Cunningham expected was far from what actually happened in this devastating account of her real-life experiences. Suffering from Kevin's extreme mental abuse, and thousands of miles away from her own family, Carla's resolve is slowly chipped away, leaving her with fewer options to save herself ... and her children. Trapped in South Africa reveals the traumatic and heartbreaking story of a woman deceived by her husband's lies and manipulations to get what he wants, even if it means convincing his own wife to commit suicide. Carla Cunningham is also the author of Alone in the Storm and is currently working on her next novel, Investigating Bellview House. Her book carries an important message of caution to those moving to foreign countries and for anyone contemplating suicide: Seek help immediately. She would also like to share her story with her children, whom she hopes will one day understand the circumstances that brought her to write this novel. Cunningham works as a medical secretary for a local hospital and resides in Leeds, United Kingdom. Publisher's website: http: //www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TrappedInSouthAfrica.htm

Book excerpt: When you lose your voice, who will speak for you? When it all seems hopeless, how do you get through each day? In the New York Times bestseller Ghost Boy, Martin Pistorius tells the harrowing story of his return to life through the healing power of love and faith. In January 1988, a happy, healthy twelve-year-old Martin Pistorius came home from school with a sore throat. Soon, he was sleeping all day, refusing meals, and starting to lose his voice. His doctors were mystified. Within eighteen months, his voice fell silent and his developing mind became trapped inside a body he couldn't control. Martin's parents were told that the unknown degenerative disease he was struggling with would mean that he had less than two years to live. He felt invisible--like a ghost of himself. The stress and heartache shook his family to the core, bringing his parents to the brink of separation. Their boy was gone--or so they thought. Martin started to come back to life. He couldn't make a sign or a sound, but he'd become aware of the world around him again and was finally finding his way back to himself. In these pages, you'll hear the highs and lows of Martin's journey from his own perspective, including: A family's resilience in the face of hardship The consequences of misdiagnosis The gift of a wild imagination Ghost Boy shares the beautiful, heart-wrenching story of a life reclaimed, a business created, a family transformed, and a new love that's blossomed. Martin's emergence from his own darkness invites us to celebrate our own lives and fight for a better life for those around us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Book 'The Invisible Traps in Africa; Preambles This Book may have manifest from what Thomas Hobbes (1961) observes as 'cooperation between people is impossible in the absence of truth'. Therefore, in as much as people deserve to know what the future hold for most African states over the last decade of post independence, there has been fewer books in stock to establish the exact type on the endless African predicament. Although, several books tend to bring alternative images from Africa different from what exactly exist in the continent. It is from these misconceptions over the years that emanate the author of this book to bring this an extraordinary account of the African past and present into the public arena for more enlighten and assimilation of what Africa predicament simply reflected. Especially to those readers and curious people who are deeply interested to know about African people, societies, problems and their causes since pre-historic down to post colonial Africa. Well at the same token, the book scrutinizes the contemporary causes of Africans underdevelopment, poverty escalation, immigrant migrating from Africa enlarging into Europe, causes of deeply divided violence among Africans and that of the emerging terrorist continent of 21st century. So far, this book brought into the public domain by the 'Author Shaibu Sunday Danladi, at this critical moment of confusion in both Africa and Europe, it is the desire of the author that what turn African into uncertainties needs to be understood from its genetic roots instead of accepting several propaganda as fact about African institutional uncertainties. Perhaps, the Book answers the questions as what had eventually turned African nations on post colonial independence into dependency. Constant untouched character of most Africa nations underdevelopment scenario, stages of anarchy etc. Undoubtedly, this book is quite unique and further engaging by its attempt at reassessing several key Africans institutional miscarriages since the journey of their independence started around 60s effectively down to the contemporary anarchist enigma at post independence. Nevertheless, to a great extent, I do believe and hope that the influence of this book will further enlarge public knowledge about African stages of malfunctioning after 60s till date. Wholly, I have viewed this book as crucial and magnificent contribution to the ongoing post independence debate as well as making understanding of African predicament in the 21st century new imperialism accessible to the general public. My interest is to serve general knowledge to the public why African underdevelopment and dependency persist (Shaibu Jr. 5th. May 2015). Good Luck. Honestly My People, Liberty..."I recognize that oppression exists merely to those who choose to live under oppressed institutions. Homes, organization, countries etc as their own self made. For the justification that, they individually-acknowledged someone cruelty and containment as their income of existence as destiny. Yet, a mistaken belief that would make oppression continues to survive in our societies. Their private and personal silent in the expression of their complex moment made their oppression achievable. Certainly, without their consent by refusing to resist, it would not have succeeded to sucking them into an early grave of disadvantages and dependency" (Shaibu, May. 5th. 2015)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities in Sub-Saharan Africa are experiencing rapid population growth. Yet their economic growth has not kept pace. Why? One factor might be low capital investment, due in part to Africa’s relative poverty: Other regions have reached similar stages of urbanization at higher per capita GDP. This study, however, identifies a deeper reason: African cities are closed to the world. Compared with other developing cities, cities in Africa produce few goods and services for trade on regional and international markets To grow economically as they are growing in size, Africa’s cities must open their doors to the world. They need to specialize in manufacturing, along with other regionally and globally tradable goods and services. And to attract global investment in tradables production, cities must develop scale economies, which are associated with successful urban economic development in other regions. Such scale economies can arise in Africa, and they will—if city and country leaders make concerted efforts to bring agglomeration effects to urban areas. Today, potential urban investors and entrepreneurs look at Africa and see crowded, disconnected, and costly cities. Such cities inspire low expectations for the scale of urban production and for returns on invested capital. How can these cities become economically dense—not merely crowded? How can they acquire efficient connections? And how can they draw firms and skilled workers with a more affordable, livable urban environment? From a policy standpoint, the answer must be to address the structural problems affecting African cities. Foremost among these problems are institutional and regulatory constraints that misallocate land and labor, fragment physical development, and limit productivity. As long as African cities lack functioning land markets and regulations and early, coordinated infrastructure investments, they will remain local cities: closed to regional and global markets, trapped into producing only locally traded goods and services, and limited in their economic growth.

Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Bloomberg • Forbes • The Spectator Recipient of Foreign Policy's 2013 Albie Award A powerful portrayal of Jeffrey Sachs's ambitious quest to end global poverty "The poor you will always have with you," to cite the Gospel of Matthew 26:11. Jeffrey Sachs—celebrated economist, special advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations, and author of the influential bestseller The End of Poverty—disagrees. In his view, poverty is a problem that can be solved. With single-minded determination he has attempted to put into practice his theories about ending extreme poverty, to prove that the world's most destitute people can be lifted onto "the ladder of development." In 2006, Sachs launched the Millennium Villages Project, a daring five-year experiment designed to test his theories in Africa. The first Millennium village was in Sauri, a remote cluster of farming communities in western Kenya. The initial results were encouraging. With his first taste of success, and backed by one hundred twenty million dollars from George Soros and other likeminded donors, Sachs rolled out a dozen model villages in ten sub-Saharan countries. Once his approach was validated it would be scaled up across the entire continent. At least that was the idea. For the past six years, Nina Munk has reported deeply on the Millennium Villages Project, accompanying Sachs on his official trips to Africa and listening in on conversations with heads-of-state, humanitarian organizations, rival economists, and development experts. She has immersed herself in the lives of people in two Millennium villages: Ruhiira, in southwest Uganda, and Dertu, in the arid borderland between Kenya and Somalia. Accepting the hospitality of camel herders and small-hold farmers, and witnessing their struggle to survive, Munk came to understand the real-life issues that challenge Sachs's formula for ending global poverty. THE IDEALIST is the profound and moving story of what happens when the abstract theories of a brilliant, driven man meet the reality of human life.
