Book excerpt: Analisis del actual estado de salud bucal en el Istmo de Centro America con base de referencia en los hallazgos de la evaluacion nutricional de la poblacion de Centro America y Panama efectuada en la decada de los anos 60's. El analisis comparativo para el grupo poblacional de edad escolar (5-14 anos) revela que la caries dental persiste como un verdadero problema de salud publica en toda la region, con prevalencias superiores al 80 por ciento. No obstante, se ha registrado una transformacion en el numero de dientes afectados. Parece haber ocurrido un aumento en el numero de dientes primarios (ceo-d) y una disminucion en el numero de dientes permanentes (CPO-D) afectados porla enfermedad. Los dientes cariados de los indicadores de caries dental dan razon por la mayor proporcion de los indices. Las diferencias encontradas entre localidades urbana/rural son pequenas. La experiencia de caries dental (CPO-D) promedio a los 12 anos de edad se encuentra desde un minimo de 4.5 hasta un maximo de 8.12. Los cambios registrados se atribuyen a una mejoria en los indices de desarrollo humano, aunque continuan bajos en comparacion con los de los paises mas desarrollados. La adaptacion de los serivicios de salud publica mediante programas de intervencion de prevencion masiva tales como la fluoruracion del agua, la sal y aplicaciones topicas por medio de los programas de salud escolar, tambien han tenido un impacto positivo en la lucha contra la enfermedad.(AU).
