Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Velveteen Rabbit is one of many presents. He is one of many around a little boy's Christmas stocking. Shiny presents, mechanical presents, big presents and expensive presents. He is put neatly aside as a never loved toy or forgotten on the floor of the nursery and the other toys shed light on what makes them special. The Velveteen Rabbit listens and despairs. He only wants to be real and he tries and tries to find what special thing will enable him to complete his quest. He looks high and low and eventually happens upon the Skin Horse, a wise and well torn toy who imparts a crucial piece of wisdom. "Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When someone loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real." In the Velveteen Rabbit we all learn how right the Skin Horse was. Margery Williams had a particularly clear window into the soul of a child and into the child's soul that lives in all of us. She taps into the need we all have to be loved and find something to love. The beautiful, poignant story of a toy, only looking for love, and his journey with a child is a timeless classic, often imitated but never surpassed. Generations of adults have been drawn to revisit this gem over the whole course of their lives and then pass along the treasure in these pages to their own children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Toys This story of my mother's family was set down by her originally only to recall it to my mind when I might no longer listen to it as it fell so often from her own lips. It was written in the intervals of her ill-health, without copying or revision, and was not intended for publication. For this reason, she has dwelt more at length upon the history of her own family life than upon that of her sisters, and has purposely omitted all but a slight reference to the grandchildren and the events of later years, her intention being to record only what was outside my memory, leaving the rest to some other pen. The story, however, has proved to be of so much interest to the other members of the family that she was expecting to review it with me as soon as possible, in order to prepare it to be printed for them. When Sam scalped her new doll, and fastened the glossy black curls to a Wigwam improvised with the curtains of the four-post bed in the best bedroom, Dot was sorely tried. As her eyes passed from the crownless doll on the floor to the floss-silk ringlets hanging from the bed furniture, her round rosy face grew rounder and rosier, and tears burst from her eyes. But in a moment more she clenched her little fists, forced back the tears, and gave vent to her favorite saying, I don't care. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you're like most of us, the mailman's annual delivery of Sears, Roebuck and Company's Christmas Catalog was a holiday event in years past. Most American children watched the mailbox carefully for those wondrous old catalogs. They were chock full of childhood fantasies... enough toys, dolls, trains and bikes to make any kid start writing his or her letter to Santa Claus. That's probably why the nickname "Wishbook" stuck. And if you grew up during the Baby Boomer years of the Fifties and Sixties, there's big news. Those lost Wishbook pages full of wonderful toys targeted to boys have been reproduced in Boys' Toys, an exciting new book containing authorized reproductions of the very best boy-toy pages from 1950 through 1969. Boys' Toys and its companion book Girls' Toys are two in a series of Sears catalog re-issues covering the spectrum of toys, dolls and other popular collectibles of the Fifties and Sixties. This 8 fi x 11 softcover book's 192 pages illustrate hundreds of now-collectible toys. All the best are represented: Lionel trains, Marx playsets, Remco's "Toys for Boys" G.I. Joe, Matchbox cars, Tonka trucks... all the way to Sixties space-age robots, rockets, and flying saucers! Included too, is a year-by-year commentary on the toys, their manufacturers and historical relevance. So put on your Davy Crockett coonskin cap and settle in for hours of fond childhood memories. Boys' Toys is fun reading for anyone... male or female... toy fan or not. It's an invaluable reference source for serious collectors and history buffs, too. -- Jam-packed with warm and happy childhood memories. Hundreds of photographs and illustrations with accompanying commentary -- A "must have"reference volume for all toy, antique and memorabilia enthusiasts

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making Tin Can Toys Tin can toys were invented after a fruitless search of the toy shops for a large tin locomotive. I had a long can in my shop at home that I thought could be very easily worked up into a toy locomotive boiler by adding a few fittings, such as a piece of tin rolled up into the form of a smokestack. Part of a small can could be used for a steam dome, or I could use the top part of a certain tooth-powder can, the distributor top of which would look very much like a whistle. A cocoa tin came in very handy for a cab, and a. thumb-tack box served for a headlight. The wheels were: -made of can lids soldered together, and the toy locomotive was made, much to the joy of my very young son who has had it in constant service for over a year, and it is still good for many trips at the end of a string. I had always used tin cans for making such articles as water motors, glue pots, melting ladles, mooring buoys for model yachts, etc., but the locomotive was the first toy, made wholly from tin cans, that I had produced, and this suggested other toys. The steam roller was next made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Toys and Their Place, Education of the Child: From "a Study of Child Nature" Hence the value of toys; they are not only promoters of play, but they appeal to the sympathies and give exercise to the emo tions; in this way a hold is gotten upon the child, by interesting him before more intel lectual' training can make much impression. The two great obstacles to the exercise of the right emotions are fear and pity these do not come into the toy-world, hence we can see how toys, according to their own tendencies, help in the healthful education of the child's emotions, through his emotions the education of his thoughts, through his thoughts the edu cation of his will, and hence his character.
