The Velveteen Rabbit, a newcomer to the nursery, asks one of the most knowledgeable toys, the Skin Horse, what being real means. "Real isn't how you're made," says the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become real. It doesn't happen all at once. You become..." And so begins the Velveteen Rabbit's journey towards becoming real--through the love of a child....

Still, the Velveteen Rabbit doesn't mind as long as the boy who owns him loves him. One of the rabbit's friends tells him that a toy becomes real if its owner truly loves it. But when the boy leaves home to recover from an illness and is forced to leave his Velveteen Rabbit behind, what will become of his beloved toy? A heartwarming tale of childhood and the transforming power of love, this unabridged version of the children's picture book written by English-American author Margery Williams Bianco was first published in 1922.

Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams and William Nicholson The Velveteen Rabbit is a children's book written by Margery Williams and William Nicholson. It chronicles the story of a stuffed rabbit and his desire to become real, through the love of his owner. Plot Summary: A stuffed rabbit sewn from velveteen is given as a Christmas present to a small boy. The boy plays with his other new presents and forgets the velveteen rabbit for a time. These presents are modern and mechanical, and they snub the old-fashioned velveteen rabbit. The wisest and oldest toy in the nursery, the Skin Horse, who was owned by the boy's uncle, tells the rabbit about toys magically becoming Real due to love from children. The rabbit is awed by this idea; however, his chances of achieving this wish are slight. One night, the boy's Nana gives the rabbit to the boy to sleep with, in place of a lost toy. The rabbit becomes the boy's favorite toy, enjoying picnics with him in the spring; and the boy regards the rabbit as 'REAL'. Time passes, and the rabbit becomes shabbier but happy. He meets some real rabbits in the summer, and they learn that he cannot hop as they do and say that he is not real.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Velveteen Rabbit: Or How Toys Become Real There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid. He was fat and bunchy, as a rabbit should be; his coat was spotted brown and white, he had real thread whiskers, and his ears were lined with pink sateen. On Christmas morning, when he sat wedged in the top of the Boy's stocking, with a sprig of holly between his paws, the effect was charming. There were other things in the stocking, nuts and oranges and a toy engine, and chocolate almonds and a clockwork mouse, but the Rabbit was quite the best of all. For at least two hours the Boy loved him, and then Aunts and Uncles came to dinner, and there was a great rustling of tissue paper and unwrapping of parcels, and in the excitement of looking at all the new presents the Velveteen Rabbit was forgotten.
