Book Synopsis Underprivileged School Children and the Assault on Dignity by : Julia Hall
Download or read book Underprivileged School Children and the Assault on Dignity written by Julia Hall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, children living in low-income communities have no choice but to grow up in a climate where they experience multiple unending assaults to their sense of dignity. This volume applies theoretical and historical insights to think through the increasingly undignified realities of life in economically marginalized communities. It includes examples of curricular challenges that low-income students in the US confront today while attempting to learn. Curricular challenges are analyzed as material texts that emerge out of student lived experiences in the economically disposed neighborhoods in which schools are located, and the dynamics of the schools and classrooms themselves. Attention is also paid to educators and students who push back against these forces in an effort to reclaim voice, identity and dignity.
Book Synopsis Race, Place, and Environmental Justice After Hurricane Katrina by : Robert D. Bullard
Download or read book Race, Place, and Environmental Justice After Hurricane Katrina written by Robert D. Bullard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall near New Orleans leaving death and destruction across the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama Gulf Coast counties. The lethargic and inept emergency response that followed exposed institutional flaws, poor planning, and false assumptions that are built into the emergency response and homeland security plans and programs. Questions linger: What went wrong? Can it happen again? Is our government equipped to plan for, mitigate, respond to, and recover from natural and manmade disasters? Can the public trust government response to be fair? Does race matter? Racial disparities exist in disaster response, cleanup, rebuilding, reconstruction, and recovery. Race plays out in natural disaster survivors' ability to rebuild, replace infrastructure, obtain loans, and locate temporary and permanent housing. Generally, low-income and people of color disaster victims spend more time in temporary housing, shelters, trailers, mobile homes, and hotels - and are more vulnerable to permanent displacement. Some 'temporary' homes have not proved to be that temporary. In exploring the geography of vulnerability, this book asks why some communities get left behind economically, spatially, and physically before and after disasters strike.

Download or read book Rebuild America written by Scott Myers-Lipton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Obama's America public works is once again a part of the national dialogue. Today it is offered as a solution to the economic downturn and to the public infrastructure crisis. This timely book examines the reasons for the economic crisis facing Main Street, and connects them to why the nation has structurally deficient bridges, weak levees, poorly maintained dams, and dilapidated schools. The book goes on to analyse the history of US public works, updating lessons from the New Deal, to understand the most effective way to organise a modern US civic works project, based on a civic works pilot project for the Gulf Coast. One chapter features new contributions by Howard Zinn, Angela Glover Blackwell, and other leading scholars and thinkers weighing in on how an US civic works project might solve our economic, infrastructure, and environmental crises.

Book Synopsis The United States Outer Executive Departments and Independent Establishments & Government Corporations by : Jock Lul Pan Chuol
Download or read book The United States Outer Executive Departments and Independent Establishments & Government Corporations written by Jock Lul Pan Chuol and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-04-29 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Book is overview of Outer executive Departments and 64 Independent Federal Agencies; the Outer Executive Departments are--United States Department of Interior, Labor, Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Housing and Urban Development, Health and Human Services, Transportation, Education, and Veterans Affairs. In the 64 Federal Independent Agencies, some are larger than many Departments; for instance, United States Postal Services employs 656, 000; ranks third next to Wal-Mart and Department of Defense that employs 700,000 civilians. Accordingly, it had been my journey to know the governmental agencies; for me, the local and states basic social service administration never been satisfactory if I dont know inside the United States Department of Health and Human Services category of its agencies. Because of that, it influences my learning and leads me made further research on governmental agencies. In these ten Outer Executive Department and 64 Independent Agencies--which I put together as a Policy of Federal Independent Agencies and Federal Outer Executive Departments, paved my way to supplementary learning on Public Services and would leads me makes further researches on States, local and Cities governments agencies. This Book can be used by Graduates and Post Graduates students as special topic on Federal Agencies/be second Book in different classes, or be main text in certain levels, and it also can be Handbook for Public Administrators, United States Congress who creates and defines the Agencies Policy and Mission, from 2nd to 111th Congresses, and to the Heads of these Agencies, and states Administrators, Directors, Public Managers and any interested individual who want to learn more on Governmental Agencies. The Heads and Staff of these Departments and Agencies may know more mainly on ones or more Agencies than the Policy on this Book, but they can easily Master other Departments and Agencies like their owns if they have this Book on hand. Bases on my believe, Graduate students from Public Administration, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, Law, and International Relation etc never apprehend all agencies specifically as how I put and illustrate them; except their Agencies. I always cross these agencies in different books, but nothing enough enlighten me how the Agencies and Policies are; now I am clearly sure on agencies policy, roles and organizations, etc. This Pans 2nd Book as well as first Book is away beyond Administrative Laws and Administrative Ethic and Leadership. Book Synopsis Knowledge, Technology and Law by : Emilie Cloatre
Download or read book Knowledge, Technology and Law written by Emilie Cloatre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationships between knowledge, technologies, and legal processes are central to the constitution of contemporary societies. As such, they have come to provide the focus for a range of academic projects, across interdisciplinary legal studies and the social sciences. The domains of medical law and ethics, intellectual property law, environmental law and criminal law are just some of those within which the pervasive place and ‘impact’ of technoscience is immediately apparent. At the same time, social scientists investigating the making of technology and expertise - in particular, scholars working within the tradition of science and technology studies - frequently interrogate how regulation and legal processes, and the making of knowledge and technologies, are intermingled in complex ways that come to shape and define each other. This book charts the important interface between studies of law, science and society, as explored from the perspectives of socio-legal studies and the increasingly influential field of science and technology studies. It brings together scholars from both areas to interrogate the joint roles of law and science in the construction and stabilization of socio-technical networks, objects, and standards, as well as their place in the production of contemporary social realities and subjectivities.
Download or read book Trainwreck written by Bill Press and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of America’s best-known progressive commentators reveals that, far from betraying conservative ideals, George W. Bush’s administration has behaved exactly as anyone would expect of a group that believes government is evil and always doomed to failure. Bill Press demonstrates that conservative positions have remained consistently wrong, and that, from its inception, the movement was dedicated to tearing things down, not building them up. Trainwreck will convince you that the conservative movement has remained on track for decades—and that, from the beginning, those tracks were headed for disaster.

David Satcher, MD, PhD, 16th Surgeon General of the United States and director, Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine "Eliminating health disparities must be a central goal of any forward thinking national health policy. Health Issues in the Black Community makes a valuable contribution to a much-needed dialogue by focusing on the challenges of the black community." Each chapter, whether addressing the health of African Americans by age, gender, type of disease, condition or behavior, is well-detailed and tells an important story. Together, they offer practitioners, consumers, scholars, and policymakers a crucial roadmap to address and change the social determinants of health, reduce disparities, and create more equal treatment for all Americans." Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, MD, MBA, president, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation "I recommend Health Issues in the Black Community as a must-read for anyone concerned about the future of the African American community. Health disparities continues to be one of the major issues confronting the black community. This book will help to highlight the issues and keep attention focused on the work to be done." Elsie Scott, PhD, president of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation "This book is the definitive examination of health issues in black America issues sadly overlooked and downplayed in our culture and society. I congratulate Drs. Braithwaite, Taylor, and Treadwell for their monumental book." Cornel West, PhD, professor, Princeton University
