Book excerpt: The athlete as a commodity to be bought or sold to make a profit and the athlete as a machine, from which the maximum possible performance is expected. It is in these two metaphors that the phenomenon known internationally as football trafficking has its roots, a definition that includes both cases of trafficking and human trafficking in football. The problem, which affects thousands of young people from economically poor areas, is also widespread in other sports. The most popular narrative attributes the blame to self-styled agents and intermediaries, who take advantage of the lack of education of young people who see football and sport as their only possibility of social mobility. However, the reality is much more complex, with responsibilities shared by all the players in the system - clubs, the media, federations and national and international political institutions and, sometimes, even the families of the children involved.

Book Synopsis To what extent does the presence of forests and trees contribute to food production in humid and dry forest landscapes? by : Samson Foli
Download or read book To what extent does the presence of forests and trees contribute to food production in humid and dry forest landscapes? written by Samson Foli and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2015-02-23 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review assesses the strength of the evidence that reports how forests and trees contribute to agricultural (food) production in order to prioritize further research for better decision-making. The search strategy employs terms from studies on forests, agroforestry, ecosystem services and agriculture across a range of bibliographic databases, internet and specialist search engines and an open call for gray literature. Retrieved articles will be screened by title, abstract and full text and inclusion/exclusion exercise will generate the final list of studies. Data from these studies will be extracted using a coding tool. Due to anticipated heterogeneity in the retrieved data, we will group findings into appropriate categories as an initial presentation of the data. Sub group meta-analysis by types of ecosystem services and other appropriate predictors will be conducted to show the positive or negative effects of forests and trees on food production. We consider there may be significant gaps in the literature with regard to: 1) Which ecosystem services are provided by forests and trees within a landscape; 2) Over what spatial scales are these services transferred, and; 3) To what extent are these services ultimately translated to increased food production?
