Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors were motivated to prepare this book by the absence of any recent comprehensive book on titanium. The intent of this book is to provide a modern compendium that addresses both the phyical metallurgy as well as the applications of titanium. Until now the only book on this subject is that by Zwicker which was written in German and published almost 30 years ago. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the subject including some historical aspects of titanium. Chapter 2 is a s- mary of the Fundamental Aspects of Titanium, Chapter 3 is a summary of the Technological Aspects of Titanium and Chapters 4 through 9 address the specifics of the various classes of titanium ranging from CP Titanium to Titanium Matrix Composites. Finally, Chapter 10 covers “special” properties and applications of titanium. Our intent has been to address the subject conceptually rather than provide quantities of data of the sort that would be found in a Handbook. It is our intent that this book is useful for materials scientists and engineers interested in using titanium and for students either as a sourcebook or as a textbook. We have - tempted to include a representative set of references which provide additional detail for readers interested in specific aspects of titanium. Because of the re- tively recent growth of the technological importance of titanium, there is a vo- minous literature on titanium. While our references span this literature it has proven impossible to mention every contribution.

Book excerpt: This is a review of the current research and development activities on the gamma/alpha, two-phase TiAl compounds which have recently received a great deal of research interest because of their refractory nature with a very low density. Particular emphasis is laid on their microstructure and mechanical behavior. Recent work on the environmental embrittlement in TiAl is also briefly reviewed.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive book provides state-of-the-art scientific and technical information in a clear format and consistent structure making it suitable for formal course work or self-instruction. The authors are drawn not only from academic institutions but also from industry, so that practical aspects of implant fabrication and material handling are covered that are often lacking in biomaterials texts. Besides readers with a general interest in biomaterials, the book will interest materials investigators, surgeons and dentists using titanium implants, medical scientists and engineers, as well as lecturers at universities or institutes who would benefit by having ready access to authoritative information on the use of titanium for implants, devices and instruments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in the development of surgical implant materials has been hindered by the lack of basic information on the nature of the tissues, organs and systems being repaired or replaced. Materials' properties of living systems, whose study has been conducted largely under the rubric of tissue mechanics, has tended to be more descriptive than quantitative. In the early days of the modern surgical implant era, this deficiency was not critical. However, as implants continue to improve and both longer service life and higher reliability are sought, the inability to predict the behavior of implanted manufactured materials has revealed the relative lack of knowledge of the materials properties of the supporting or host system, either in health or disease. Such a situation is unacceptable in more conventional engineering practice: the success of new designs for aeronautical and marine applications depends exquisitely upon a detailed, disciplined and quantitative knowledge of service environments, including the properties of materials which will be encountered and interacted with. Thus the knowledge of the myriad physical properties of ocean ice makes possible the design and development of icebreakers without the need for trial and error. In contrast, the development period for a new surgical implant, incorporating new materials, may well exceed a decade and even then only short term performance predictions can be made.
