Timber products account for about one - fourth of all the raw materials We use in manufacturing and building. More than 12 billion cubic feet of timber products are consumed yearly: Saw logs for lumber, pulpwood for paper, fuelwood, posts, poles, piling, and other logs and bolts from which products such as veneer and cooperage are made. The average American uses about 80 cubic feet of wood per year. Lumber is used in greater amounts than any other industrial timber product. Each one of us uses twice as much lumber as a Russian, four times as much as an Englishman, and six times as much as a Frenchman. Our use of paper, too, far exceeds that of any other country. The stand of timber is estimated roughly at 746 billion cubic feet, of which 48 5 billion cubic feet is saw timber and 261 billion cubic feet cordwood. Almost three-fourths of the saw timber is in the remaining virgin forests. These remaining virgin forests are chieﬂy found in two widely separated regions, the South and far West, from which the United States is now drawing the bulk of its lumber cut. Together, they have 85 per cent of the total area still occupied by virgin growth, and 95 per cent of the re maining stand of virgin timber. The area of virgin growth in the far West is twice that in the South, with a stand in the ratio of 3% to 1.
