Leadership is often a struggle, and yet strong taboos keep us from talking openly and honestly about our difficulties for fear of looking weak and seeming to lack confidence. But Steven Snyder shows that this discussion is vital—adversity is precisely what unlocks our greatest potential. Using real-life stories drawn from his extensive research studying 151 diverse episodes of leadership struggle—as well as from his experiences working with Bill Gates in the early years of Microsoft and as a CEO and executive coach—Snyder shows how to navigate intense challenges to achieve personal growth and organizational success. He details strategies for embracing struggle and offers a host of unique tools and hands-on practices to help you implement them. By mastering the art of struggle, you’ll be better equipped to meet life’s challenges and focus on what matters most. “Leadership and the Art of Struggle provides you with the opportunity to learn from Snyder’s remarkable wisdom. It is a living guide that you can return to time and time again as new situations arise.” —From the foreword by Bill George, former CEO, Medtronic; Professor of Management Practice, Harvard Business School; and author of the bestselling True North “The leadership book of the year...one of the most intelligent, revealing, and practical books on the subject I have ever read. It confronts a vital truth: that challenge is the crucible for greatness and that these adversities introduce us to ourselves.” —Jim Kouzes, coauthor of the bestselling The Leadership Challenge “Steven Snyder covers all the bases from channeling your energy to managing conflict, including a great segment about overcoming your leadership blind spots...This encouraging book is a must-read!” —Ken Blanchard, coauthor of The One Minute Manager and Great Leaders Grow “Leadership and the Art of the Struggle gives you clear and compelling advice on transforming pitfalls into possibilities.” —Jodee Kozlak, Executive Vice President, Human Resources, Target

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language of human rights has become the public vocabulary of our contemporary world. Ironically, as the political influence of human rights has grown, their philosophical justification has become ever more controversial. Building on a theory of discourse ethics and communicative rationality, this book addresses the politics and philosophy of human rights against the background of the broader social transformations that are shaping the modern world. Rejecting the reduction of international human rights to the Trojan horse of a neo-liberal empire's bid for world power, as well as the conservative objections to legal cosmopolitanism as encroachments upon democratic sovereignty, Benhabib develops two key concepts to move beyond these false antitheses. International human rights norms need contextualization in specific polities through processes of what she calls 'democratic iterations.' Furthermore, such norms have a 'jurisgenerative power,' in that they enable new actors to enter fields of social and political contestation; they promote new vocabularies for public claim-making and anticipate a justice to come. Ranging over themes such as sovereignty, citizenship, genocide, European anti-semitism, the crisis of the nation-state, and the 'scarf affair' in contemporary Europe and Turkey, this major new book by one of our leading political theorists reflects upon the political transformations of our times and makes a compelling case for a cosmopolitanism without illusions.

Yet how many of us will know what to do to prevent our lives from spiraling out of control when we encounter traumatic events that threaten our safety, careers, emotions, health, or relationships? In this pragmatic and inspirational book, experienced US-based life coach and former psychotherapist Eileen Lenson shows us tools to turn suffering into hope and develop resilience by combining scientific research with an understanding of our emotional and spiritual lives. She cuts through existing myths and provides readers with a look into what it takes to not just overcome adversity and survive, but to thrive. Written to help anyone who finds themselves in a painful place, regardless of social background, culture, religion or education, each chapter describes from a scientific, psychological and spiritual perspective, why we do the things we do. Armed with this knowledge we can learn to manage our feelings and respond to devastating events with the skills to seek healthy coping options and change our lives for the better. In this book you’ll learn how to: • Use five core factors of your life — forgiveness, courage, perspective, perseverance, and hope — to reduce emotional suffering. • Identify and replace unproductive coping skills with healthy thoughts, feelings and behaviors. • Master new skills through practice exercises. • Benefit from the stories of others, just like you, who have faced and overcome adversity.

Book excerpt: From the dark ages, the treatment of those mentally ill has progressed from chaining to a wall those afflicted with mental disturbance who never saw the light of day. However, in US emergency rooms, our young people on the brink of despair are held hostage for psychiatric care. We have been bound to the antiquated biomedical model of mental health care. It is fortunate that we, as a society, are experiencing a mental health crisis of enormous proportions currently only in the sense that we are beginning to hear a wake-up call as we witness a total breakdown of our mental healthcare system regarding the mental stability of our youth and other groups of everyday people. Healthcare professionals and societies are beginning to understand that mental health is integral to overall health and is more than the absence of symptoms of psychological distress. The mastery important to us all includes the acquisition of the capacity to reflect, to relate on a deep level with others emotionally, and to empathize in the face of change or stressful situations. Resilient young people who possess these qualities and the ability to wrestle through adversity when they have the skillsets to do so, lead more successful lives when they know how to make lemonade out of lemons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerald Ziedenberg was born in Toronto on October 22, 1939. He had a serious arm defect called Erb’s palsy. His immigrant parents provided a foundation for his life, but school and upper-level education were not encouraged. Despite his weight and arm defect, Gerald Ziedenberg struggled and managed to get through pharmacy school. He went on to have a highly successful career with Shoppers Drug Mart, where he eventually simultaneously had three very profitable downtown drug stores. He efficiently managed these three stores with twelve full-time pharmacists, two hundred employees, and sales in excess of 35 million dollars annually. Gerald completed several marathons and frequently bicycled more than 100 miles a day. As he approached retirement, he was struck down by extremely severe osteoarthritis, and this completely curtailed all his physical activities. His arm defect compounded his problems. After six major surgeries, he was finally approaching a complete cure. During these nine long years of pain and frustration, Gerald returned to the University of Toronto, where he graduated with high distinction in 2003, with a BA in modern history. This was upgraded to an Honors BA in modern history in 2005 (also with high distinction). Gerald won a scholarship for being the “best part-time graduate history student” in 2008. Gerald is now approaching the finalization of his master’s degree in modern history at the University of Toronto. In addition, Gerald has made himself into a public speaker and consultant. He frequently speaks and organizes programs at Beth Tikvah Synagogue. He has appeared on nine different cruises, lecturing on historical people and events of interest as well as destination ports. Gerald also spent large amounts of time lecturing and consulting to Superpharm, a large Israeli drugstore chain and sister company to Shoppers Drug Mart. In the face of severe pain and lack of mobility, Gerald still has made significant contributions to the Jewish community of Toronto and his synagogue. In spite of all the pain, which was excruciating at times, Jerry managed to travel to almost all the places he dreamt of as a child. After a long and successful career as an entrepreneurial pharmacist, Gerald truly managed inspiration through the adversity of his senior years, when he virtually lost a decade of his life.

Book excerpt: Welcome, dear reader, to a journey unlike any other—a voyage through the valleys and peaks of human experience, guided by the unwavering light of faith. This book, Faith Through Adversity, is crafted to accompany you through the turbulent waters of life's trials, offering a beacon of hope that shines even in the darkest times. Adversity is an undeniable part of our earthly sojourn. It comes in many forms: illness, loss, betrayal, financial hardship, and countless other trials that test the very fabric of our spirit. Yet, it is precisely in the heat of these trials that our faith is both tested and strengthened. As gold is refined by fire, so too is our faith purified through the adversities we endure. The pages that follow are more than mere words; they are an invitation to explore the profound and often mysterious dynamics of faith in the face of challenges. We will delve into the lives of those who walked before us, biblical figures who faced overwhelming odds with a faith so powerful that it has echoed through the ages. Their stories are not just historical accounts; they are vibrant, living examples of divine truth acting in human lives. This book is also a call to introspection and personal growth. As you turn each page, you may see your reflection in the struggles and triumphs of those whose stories are told here. Through their experiences, we will seek to understand not only the nature of adversity but also the transformative power of faith that emerges in response to it. Together, we will uncover the deep roots of enduring belief, the kind that sustains and nourishes us when the ground shakes beneath our feet. We will learn to recognize the ways in which our challenges can deepen our understanding of God’s grace, mercy, and love, and how our darkest moments can become the backdrop for our most profound spiritual revelations. So, I invite you to step forward into this exploration of resilience and spiritual endurance. Let us journey together, with hearts open to the lessons that only adversity can teach, and with eyes lifted to the hope that faith in Christ offers. The path will not always be easy, but the promise of God’s presence is sure. With each step, let us draw closer to the truth that through every trial, God is with us, refining us into His image, for His glory and our ultimate good. Welcome to Faith Through Adversity. Let this book be your guide as you navigate the challenges of life with faith as your compass.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's a story of a professional gardener's son, living quite comfortably up until the time of England's general strike. The duration of one year was just too much for the average family, which left my parents practically penniless. When the strike started in late November 1926, it also put my father on the dole. The impossible task - which was beyond his capabilities - created the loss of his job. He was told of additional duties he was to perform, and he refused. The labours of a gardener to provide for 300 plus is a full-time job in itself, but the addition of being a chauffeur upon demand and to be a waiter at the evening dinner table was far more than anybody should be asked to do. Christmas 1927 we were poor, with hardships occuring during the ensuing years before the war. In 1939 the war appeared imminent, so I became a part of the RAF reserve as a storekeeper, and shortly afterwards was mobilized on September 2, 1939. Such episodes as the Brize Norton Bombing are detailed, along with other events which transpired. After I was posted to a mobile squadron #242 Hurricane, we were shipped to an unknown destination. We became part of the allied force in the Dutch East Indies, followed by the Dutch Capitulation, to become prisoners of war to the Japanese, which led to attrocities in four labour camps, then into Fukuoka #2 Nagasaki. Slavery greatly reduced our anatomies to skeletons, myself to 84 lbs. Of all the red cross parcels shipped to us, we saw very little of their contents. The "A" Bomb or "Fat Boy" was our salvation. It saved invasion and the massacre of the POW's. On the way home, we still faced dangers at sea - mines and typhoons. Here my faith was to prevail. Family reunions and rehabilitation was painful and hard. Finally, I answered the requests of the Canadian government seeking tradesmen. After complying with all the requirements of immigration, my family was accepted. I can only say I have given my best, but I deplore the actions of many Canadians who have become gullible to many devices.

These two key principles—rooted in Scripture and seen in the lives of Christians throughout the ages—should color the lenses through which all followers of Christ view adversity. In Advancing Through Adversity, Dr. Charles Stanley provides a new perspective on the trials we face, revealing what questions to ask and what lessons can be learned from such times. Understanding God's role and bolstering our courage can help us advance through adversity rather than be overcome by it. With over 1 million copies sold, the Charles F. Stanley Bible Study Series is a unique approach to Bible study, incorporating biblical truth, personal insights, emotional responses, and a call to action. Each study draws on Dr. Stanley's many years of teaching the guiding principles found in God's Word, showing how we can apply them in practical ways to every situation we face. This edition of the series has been completely revised and updated and includes two brand-new lessons from Dr. Stanley. Each of the twelve lessons includes: Overview: A brief look at what is covered in the lesson. Life's Questions: A teaching from Dr. Stanley that unpacks the topic of the lesson. Living the Principle: Application and Bible study questions based on the key points. Reflection: Key takeaways to put into practice today and tomorrow.
