Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The civil rights movement was arguably the most successful social movement in American history. In a provocative new assessment of its success, David Chappell argues that the story of civil rights is not a story of the ultimate triumph of liberal ideas after decades of gradual progress. Rather, it is a story of the power of religious tradition. Chappell reconsiders the intellectual roots of civil rights reform, showing how northern liberals' faith in the power of human reason to overcome prejudice was at odds with the movement's goal of immediate change. Even when liberals sincerely wanted change, they recognized that they could not necessarily inspire others to unite and fight for it. But the prophetic tradition of the Old Testament--sometimes translated into secular language--drove African American activists to unprecedented solidarity and self-sacrifice. Martin Luther King Jr., Fannie Lou Hamer, James Lawson, Modjeska Simkins, and other black leaders believed, as the Hebrew prophets believed, that they had to stand apart from society and instigate dramatic changes to force an unwilling world to abandon its sinful ways. Their impassioned campaign to stamp out "the sin of segregation" brought the vitality of a religious revival to their cause. Meanwhile, segregationists found little support within their white southern religious denominations. Although segregationists outvoted and outgunned black integrationists, the segregationists lost, Chappell concludes, largely because they did not have a religious commitment to their cause.

Book excerpt: "James Luther Adams, one of the most beloved teachers, racontours, scholars and editors of the 20th century, wrote in small rather than full-length books. No one has mastered this vast body of material or grasped his inner coherence better than Beach, who not only edited several earlier volumes of Adam's works but has now compiled the main themes into this compelling, coherent, readable and delightfully integrated whole. It is a magnificent achievement, done with nuance, art, and accuracy. I would not be surprised to see this volume trigger a resurgence of liberalism in theology and social thought." -Max J. Stackhouse, Devries Professor of Theology and Public Life and Director of Kuyper Center for Public Theology, Princeton Theological Seminary "Adams was the most transforming figure in 20th-century Unitarian Univeralism. Having previously edited Adams's essays, Beach masterfully gives us the master himself... the smiling prophet of liberal religion." -John A. Buchrens, co-author of A Chosen Faith "Beach leads the reader on a discursive, personal journey through the mind and faith of James Luther Adams. Rich in parable and paradox. Adam's thought remains vivid, his cautions instructive and his spiritual and ethical commitment worthy of abiding emulation." -Forest Church, author of Freedom from Fear Until now, we have glimpsed Adam's vision through his parables and short writings. Here is the book that many have sought in his life-work- a systematic yet nuanced and entirely readable theology for a new religious liberalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious liberalism in America has often been equated with an ecumenical Protestant establishment. By contrast, American Religious Liberalism draws attention to the broad diversity of liberal cultures that shapes America's religious movements. The essays gathered here push beyond familiar tropes and boundaries to interrogate religious liberalism's dense cultural leanings by looking at spirituality in the arts, the politics and piety of religious cosmopolitanism, and the interaction between liberal religion and liberal secularism. Readers will find a kaleidoscopic view of many of the progressive strands of America's religious past and present in this richly provocative volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the millions of people who identify as liberal Christians. In McLennan's bold call to reclaim ownership of Christianity, he advocates a sense of religion based not on doctrinal readings of scripture but on the humanity behind Christ's teachings. He addresses such topics as intelligent design, abortion, same sex marriage, war. torture and much, much more. As he says in the Preface, "We liberal Christians know in our hearts that there is much more to life than seems to meet the rational eye of atheists; yet we find it hard to support supernatural claims about religion that fly in the face of scientific evidence."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few figures who were active in the English Romantic Movement are as fascinating as Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834). Aside from his own visionary verse, Coleridge is famous for his colourful friendships with fellow-poets Wordsworth and Southey, and above all for his well documented drug-taking and creative use of opium. But it is less widely appreciated that he was also a key figure in Anglican thought, whose writings are continually referred to by modern Anglican theologians. Coleridge's journey from the Unitarianism of his father towards a later commitment to Anglican Trinitarianism of a type he had rejected in his youth involved a rigorous philosophical process of imaginative liberal thinking. Over the last 200 years, that thinking has provided Anglicanism with many valedictory tools as well as a measure of robust self-belief. Offering a major contribution both to religious history and the history of ideas, Graham Neville here charts the particular liberal tradition in British religious thought which stems directly from Coleridge. He shows why Coleridge's thought remains so significant, and traces the ways in which his subject's theological ideas profoundly influenced later British writers and scholars like F.D. Maurice, F.J.A. Hort, F.W. Robertson, B.F. Westcott, John Oman and Thomas Erskine (once called the 'Scottish Coleridge'). Dr Neville further relates the pioneering ideas of Coleridge to current developments in theology and scientific method.
