Book excerpt: It has been demonstrated that the conventional technique of fixed-laser-sheet flow visualization can be extended to include three-dimensional visualization by means of a scanning laser sheet. This system was implemented using a rotating mirror in conjunction with appropriate fixed optics. A space-filling three-dimensional data base was digitally obtained from the imaging and recording units, and was processed to yield a variety of three dimensional views of the flow field in addition to obtaining quantitative results regarding mixing levels and velocities. Laser-sheet scanning was first applied in a study of boundary-layer turbulence in which active control was implemented. The flow visualization readily indicated the near-wall instabilities present in turbulent spots and synthetic turbulent boundary-layers. When control was attempted using an array of surface heating elements, the visualization technique graphically illustrated the attenuation of the near-wall sublayer 'streaks' and resultant quiescent outer flow.

Book excerpt: This is the 2nd edition of the book, Flow Visualization: Techniques and Examples, which was published by Imperial College Press in 2000. Many of the chapters have been revised and updated to take into consideration recent changes in a number of flow visualization and measurement techniques, including an updated high quality flow gallery. Unique among similar publications, this book focuses on the practical rather than theoretical aspects. Obtaining high quality flow visualization results is, in many ways, more of an art than a science, and experience plays a key deciding role. The depth and breadth of the material will make this book invaluable to readers of all levels of experience in the field.

Book excerpt: The contents of this volume reflect to a large extent the efforts made by a group of Institutes at the ETH Zürich to develop new techniques for measurements of flows in fluids in the last decade. The motivation came from the study of tr~sport and mixing processes in natural and industrial systems. One of the characteristic properties of turbulence is its high mixing efficiency. The techniques developed are therefore suitable, although not exclusively, for turbulence measurements. They can be subdivided into point-measurements and field-measurements. The aim of the point-measurements developed is to determine the three components of the velocity and all their first derivatives with good temporal resolution and accuracy in turbulent flows. The old and weIl established method of hot-wire anemometry was used for this purpose. One of the main achievements in this context is the construction of miniature multi-wire probes. This technique was introduced to the Institute of Hydromechanics and Water Resources Management of ETH Zürich by Profs. A. Tsinober and E. Kit from Tel-Aviv University. This was made possible by the generous financial support by ETH, for which I would like to express my gratitude on this occasion. In addition, Dr. F.E. Joergensen from DANTEC contributed an example of recent developments in the hardware ofConstant Temperature Anemometry (CTA), for which I am very thankful.

The scope of the International Symposium on Flow Visualiza- tion will be broader than ever, covering the range of infor- mation generally thought of as nonvisual and reflecting the inclusion of computer - aided methodologies. The Sixth In- ternational Symposium on Flow Visualization aims to attract the participation of experts and users of flow viualizing techniques on furthering an advanced philosophy for the de- velopment of the methods and their applications.

Book excerpt: Visualization is a novel interdisciplinary science for making any phenomenon clear by visualizing the invisible using computer techniques. The Atlas of Visualization presents the latest advances in visualization techniques, image processing, computer graphics, and visualization of measured and compound results. Focusing on both experimental and computer-aided visualization, this encyclopedic resource discusses all aspects of this new and evolving science. This volume includes cutting-edge information on turbulent flow, vortex, water spray, PIV, jet flames, thermal plume and numerical simulation, and heat and mass transfer. Encompasses all aspects of visualization! The Atlas of Visualization is concerned with all aspects of visualization, not just with engineering and physics applications, but with applications in disciplines such as the biomedical sciences, oceanography, agriculture, meteorology, and sports science. The aim of this book is to provide a medium for announcing the latest advances in visualization. Full color presentation! Books on visualization could not discuss complex phenomena without the use of color photographs. For this reason, the Atlas of Visualization is issued in full color. This allows the complex phenomena to be presented clearly, and combined phenomena are illustrated with quantitative results and detailed structure. Global perspective! The chapters and gravures in the Atlas are contributed by the world's top researchers, and provides both researchers and technicians with extremely useful information from the foremost innovators in the field of visualization. Computer scientists, mechanical engineers, physicists, applied and biological scientists, meteorologists, and sports scientists, as well as students of these disciplines, will find the Atlas of Visualization an essential source of all the latest knowledge in the field of visualization.

Book excerpt: The near-field region within an order of 100 nm from the solid interface is an exciting and crucial arena where many important multiscale transport phenomena are physically characterized, such as flow mixing and drag, heat and mass transfer, near-wall behavior of nanoparticles, binding of bio-molecules, crystallization, surface deposition processes, just naming a few. This monograph presents a number of label-free experimental techniques developed and tested for near-field fluid flow characterization. Namely, these include Total Internal Reflection Microscopy (TIRM), Optical Serial Sectioning Microscopy (OSSM), Surface Plasmon Resonance Microscopy (SPRM), Interference Reflection Contrast Microscopy (IRCM), Thermal Near-Field Anemometry, Scanning Thermal Microscopy (STM), and Micro-Cantilever Near-Field Thermometry. Presentation on each of these is laid out for the working principle, how to implement the system, and its example applications, to promote the readers understanding and knowledge of the specific technique that can be applied for their own research interests.
