This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Pownall, M. P., F. R. S., Governor of Massachusetts Bay, Author of the Letters of Junius: With a Supplement Comparing the Colonies of Kings George III and Edward VII First, to revive the memory of a distant kinsman, who did his best to serve England. Thomas Pownall was a lieutenant of Pitt, he shared that great statesman's views. He was able to reinforce them with knowledge, gained on the spot, of the then existing conditions of the North American Colonies, and the men, such as Franklin, who were the leaders of opinion there. In the years after his return from those colonies, both from his place in Parliament and in his writings, he advocated those measures of conciliation which Pitt regarded as the only means of preventing a rupture. If they had been adopted the Stars and Stripes need never have replaced the Union Jack. Circumstances change from generation to generation; the nature of mankind and the problems it has to face remain much the same at all times. Secondly, the attempt is made to deduce, from the failure of an oligarchy to deal with its Overseas Men of the eighteenth century, some parallels and lessons which may perhaps help to prevent the democracy of to-day from committing similar errors in the present and the future. Book Synopsis On the Battlefield of Merit by : Daniel R. Coquillette
Download or read book On the Battlefield of Merit written by Daniel R. Coquillette and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvard Law School is the oldest and, arguably, the most influential law school in the nation. U.S. presidents, Supreme Court justices, and foreign heads of state, along with senators, congressional representatives, social critics, civil rights activists, university presidents, state and federal judges, military generals, novelists, spies, Olympians, film and TV producers, CEOs, and one First Lady have graduated from the school since its founding in 1817. During its first century, Harvard Law School pioneered revolutionary educational ideas, including professional legal education within a university, Socratic questioning and case analysis, and the admission and training of students based on academic merit. But the school struggled to navigate its way through the many political, social, economic, and legal crises of the century, and it earned both scars and plaudits as a result. On the Battlefield of Merit offers a candid, critical, definitive account of a unique legal institution during its first century of influence. Daniel R. Coquillette and Bruce A. Kimball examine the school’s ties with institutional slavery, its buffeting between Federalists and Republicans, its deep involvement in the Civil War, its reluctance to admit minorities and women, its anti-Catholicism, and its financial missteps at the turn of the twentieth century. On the Battlefield of Merit brings the story of Harvard Law School up to 1909—a time when hard-earned accomplishment led to self-satisfaction and vulnerabilities that would ultimately challenge its position as the leading law school in the nation. A second volume will continue this history through the twentieth century.
Book Synopsis Science and the Founding Fathers: Science in the Political Thought of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and James Madison by : I. Bernard Cohen
Download or read book Science and the Founding Fathers: Science in the Political Thought of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and James Madison written by I. Bernard Cohen and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1997-01-17 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General readers, students of American history, and professional historians alike will profit from reading this engaging presentation of an aspect of American history conspicuously absent from the usual textbooks and popular presentations of the political thought of early America. Thomas Jefferson was the only president who could read and understand Newton's Principia. Benjamin Franklin is credited with establishing the science of electricity. John Adams had the finest education in science that the new country could provide, including "Pnewmaticks, Hydrostaticks, Mechanicks, Staticks, Opticks." James Madison, chief architect of the Constitution, peppered his Federalist Papers with references to physics, chemistry, and the life sciences. For these men science was an integral part of life—including political life. This is the story of their scientific education and of how they employed that knowledge in shaping the political issues of the day, incorporating scientific reasoning into the Constitution.
