Despite the fact only perhaps twenty of his plays were published, and fewer still survive, he was far more prolific than that. Born around 1572 his peak years were the mid 1590's to the 1620's - seven of which he spent in a debtor's prison. His works span the late Elizabethan and Caroline eras and his numerous collaborations with Ford, Middleton, Webster and Jonson say much about his work. His pamphlets detail much of the life in these times, times of great change, of plague and of course that great capital city London a swirling mass of people, power, intrigue.

Book excerpt: The Elizabethan dramatist Thomas Dekker was a versatile and prolific writer, whose career spanned several decades and brought him into contact with many of the period's most famous dramatists. Of the surviving plays that are entirely Dekker’s work, the best-known are ‘The Shoemakers Holiday’ (1600) and ‘The Honest Whore, Part 2’ (1630), which are typical of his work in their use of the moralistic tone of traditional drama. His ear for colloquial speech served him well in his vibrant portrayals of daily life in London and his works are characterised for their boisterousness nature and an inimitable mixture of realistic detail and romanticised plot. Dekker was also a writer of pamphlets, celebrated for their lively depictions of London life, vividly charting the city’s traumatic times. For the first time in publishing history, this eBook presents Dekker’s complete dramatic works, with numerous illustrations, rare plays and masques, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Satiro-Mastix;" by Thomas Dekker is a late Elizabethan stage play. It was also involved in the Poetomachia or War of the Theatres. In Satiromastix, Horace (Jonson) is represented as a social hanger-on and toady, desperate to establish himself as an independent moralist but fearful of being held responsible for his judgments. We know his writing is corrupt, not because it is bad writing but because he himself is dishonest; his verse is concocted to exploit social possibilities, though he represents it as an essential part of a well-regulated state....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to honor the scholarly legacy of Charles R. Forker with a series of essays that address the problem of literary influence in original ways and from a variety of perspectives. The emphasis throughout is on the sort of careful, exhaustive, evidence-based scholarship to which Forker dedicated his entire professional life. Although wide-ranging and various by design, the essays in this book never lose sight of three discrete yet overlapping areas of literary inquiry that create a unity of perspective amid the diversity of approaches: 1) the formation of play texts, textual analysis, and editorial practice; 2) performance history and the material playing conditions from Shakespeare’s time to the present, including film as well as stage representations; and 3) the world, both cultural and literary, in which Shakespeare and his contemporaries worked and to which they bequeathed an artistic legacy that continues to be re-interpreted and re-defined by a whole new set of cultural and literary pressures. Eschewing any single, predetermined ideological perspective, the essays in this book call our attention to how the simplest questions or observations can open up provocative and unexpected scholarly vistas. In so doing, they invite us into a subtly re-configured world of literary influence that draws us into new, often unexpected, ways of seeing and understanding the familiar.

Book excerpt: Through an examination of drama spanning the Elizabethan-Jacobean-Caroline period, Thomas Dekker and the Traditions of English Drama provides new insights into the evolution of the genre and of Thomas Dekker's contribution to this development. His insistent determination to experiment is best reflected in the steady advance in form in his early romantic comedies, in his interweaving of divergent comic modes in The Roaring Girl, in his use of a wide variety of medieval dramatic techniques in setting the legend of Dorothea to stage in The Virgin Martyr, and in his examination of profound moral and social ambiguities in The Witch of Edmonton. Equally important is his ability to interact creatively with his fellow playwrights, to respond to the influence of Jonson, Marston, and Chapman in Northward Ho, to Shakespeare's Measure For Measure in 2 The Honest Whore.... The overwhelming conclusion is that Dekker deserves a considerably higher place than most critics have been willing to acknowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixed Faith and Shared Feeling explores the mutually generative relationship between post-Reformation religious life and London's commercial theaters. It explores the dynamic exchange between the imaginatively transformative capacities of shared theatrical experience, with the particular ideological baggage that individual playgoers bring into the theater. While early modern English drama was shaped by the polyvocal, confessional scene in which it was embedded, Musa Gurnis contends that theater does not simply reflect culture but shapes it. According to Gurnis, shared theatrical experience allowed mixed-faith audiences to vicariously occupy alternative emotional and cognitive perspectives across the confessional spectrum. In looking at individual plays, such as Thomas Middleton's A Game of Chess and Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, Gurnis shows how theatrical process can restructure playgoers' experiences of confessional material and interrupt dominant habits of religious thought. She refutes any assumption that audiences consisted of conforming Church of England Protestants by tracking the complex and changing religious lives of seventy known playgoers. Arguing against work that seeks to draw fixed lines of religious affiliation around individual playwrights or companies, she highlights the common practice of cross-confessional collaboration among playhouse colleagues. Mixed Faith and Shared Feeling demonstrates how post-Reformation representational practices actively reshaped the ways ideologically diverse Londoners accessed the mixture of religious life across the spectrum of beliefs.
