Instead we see across the world, among others, growing inequality in terms of the distribution of wealth and income, which has led to such popular responses as the Occupy Wall Street movement in the US and the antiausterity demonstrations in Europe. And indeed neo-liberal deregulation to create a ‘free market’ for the financial institutions led to the world financial and economic crisis which started in the US in 2008 – the worst global economic crisis since the 1929 Depression, again in the US. Given all the foregoing, what is called for are alternative and progressive voices which are able to offer different interpretations and readings of the fastunfolding events and processes, and are also capable of questioning the prevailing assumptions and underlying logic of the Western ‘liberal order’. This is the same order that must bear much of the responsibility for the current state of despair, hopelessness, and cynicism in international relations. These alternative and progressive voices are especially important for us as Africans, given the reality that Africa remains marginalised in terms of helping to fashion these relations, despite their direct impact on the lives and destiny of the one billion Africans. Firstly, as a project in decoloniality, it constitutes an ‘epistemic break’ from mainstream logics and approaches to understanding state, society and development in Africa, presenting an approach that is filtered through a Euro-American lens that reifies the hegemony of a particular spatio-temporality. In other words, it emphasises the importance of situatedness by thinking from rather than about or with Africa. The issues covered include state failure in Africa, the geopolitics of US and NATO military interventions on the continent, individual states’ responses to international law, indigenous moral political leadership, authentic inclusion of marginalised voices in development practice, an endogenous approach to environmental ethics, and a spiritualist reflection on the need for Africa to chart her own course to political, social and economic redemption. Again, a leader must live with a moral purpose. He must be the embodiment of a decent model of live to the people he is in charge of or the organization he oversees. His first and utmost responsibility should be the welfare of the people and not his own quick enrichment. Some African leaders should consider going back to the traditional African model of leadership, adapting it to the world's everchanging events and realities. This book is to remind African leaders the meaning of leadership.
