Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.

Book excerpt: Bob Slocum was living the American dream. He had a beautiful wife, three lovely children, a nice house...and all the mistresses he desired. He had it all -- all, that is, but happiness. Slocum was discontent. Inevitably, inexorably, his discontent deteriorated into desolation until...something happened. Something Happened is Joseph Heller's wonderfully inventive and controversial second novel satirizing business life and American culture. The story is told as if the reader was overhearing the patter of Bob Slocum's brain -- recording what is going on at the office, as well as his fantasies and memories that complete the story of his life. The result is a novel as original and memorable as his Catch-22.

Book excerpt: Cancer diagnosis and treatment can make a person feel both frightened and powerless; Anna Fitch Courie takes a different approach: Join her as she embarks on an epic journey with God after finding out she has cancer. Cancer Girl wraps herself in a cape of grace, freely sharing her experiences of diagnosis, traversing the medical system, finding faith in God again, and learning to live with cancer. Cancer Girl learns that there is no stronger “magic word” than “Trust God.” Part journal, part sage advice, Fitch Courie weaves her experience as a nurse throughout her story. Using her real-time blog posts during the course of diagnosis, treatment, and living with the disease, Fitch Courie covers the cycle of grief and relearning a new norm, offering assurance to others that they are not alone. Each chapter opens with Scripture that reflects the theme of the day. Section 1 covers early stages of the journey; Section 2 offers learnings from the experience; and Section 3 offers questions for the individual to reflect on their own illness and how they felt. Readers are encouraged to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences with their illness in order to contribute to overall healing.

It offers a forum for critical analysis and inquiry into digital media theory. The journal provides a venue for publication for interdisciplinary research approaches, contemporary theory developments and methodological innovation in digital media studies. It invites reflection on how culture unfolds through the use of digital technology, and how it conversely influences the development of digital technology itself. The inaugural issue »Digital Material/ism« presents methodological and theoretical insights into digital materiality and materialism.

It will take you through the land of no return. Lewy Bodies are small crystals in the brain. You must have a magnifying lens to find them. They can live about seven years from the time it starts until death. Melba Williams Fisher wrote Fallen Leaves from the notes she took while her husband was tragically experiencing these diseases. She wants to inform readers about Lewy Body Disease since there isn’t much known about it. Melba’s husband’s leaf weathered many strong storms. It amazed the doctors. Then one big storm came, and his leaf fell. The wind blew it toward heaven. We are all leaves from God’s Tree of Life. Some leaves hang on longer while others curl up and fall off.

Book excerpt: Will Israel and the U.S. be destroyed or partially destroyed in 2012-2019 or 2026-2030 and beyond and Muslims, Catholics and communism take over most of the world? Were there strange things going around the sun, the moon changing degrees and phases, stars that aren't where there suppose to be and the magnetic poles changing mostly reported secretly in 2001-2011? Did NASA or scientists and astronomers brush the pictures of them away so not to scare people? Did the Bible Code predict strange behavior of the moon in 2011? Will a great tidal wave hit the U.S. East Coast in 2012-2019 and Yellowstone Park super volcano erupt or a comet or asteroid hits the earth or Ocean in 2026-2030 and utterly destroy the entire United States if it still around after the war of 2012-2019? Will the Muslims, communism and Catholics persecute Christians, Americans and Jews all over the world bringing them before Kings and have them sent to prisons and torture and killed if they don't deny Christ and convert to Islam? Will Muslims and people all over the world begin to mock and scoff at Christians and the Bible because Israel and the U.S. are destroyed and no Rapture or end or Second Coming of Christ happened? Several of the Bible prophecies predict God will not make a full end of the U.S., Israel and the world at this time and pockets of people and nations may or may not survive. God may save the U.S., Israel and the world if the people repent and turn from their sins and begin to humble themselves and heed the harbingers. But if they don't then these events may start to happen. This book was written by June 12, 2012.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “SHADOW RIDERS” is the third book in this seven-book series under the title “MYSTICISM IN NEWBURYPORT.” It is the continuing unfolding story of just another soul’s re-awakening in this lifetime to the truth of his divinity. After Peter’s younger wild years growing up in Lynn, Massachusetts with heavy alcohol use and abusing all the drugs of the sixties, along with his love of riding motorcycles and physical training, he found himself crawling into the 12-step recovery program for alcoholics. Peter abused alcohol for seven years and he drank alcoholically right from his first drink. He used all the drugs of the sixties and combined both alcohol and drugs, which brought him to his knees at a very young age. He was to be involved in endless trouble with police, car and motorcycle crashes, high speed chases, arrests, and many broken bones. Peter’s journey in the recovery program began with a spiritual awakening and he began his education about the spiritual principles and the ancient wisdom from the past. While Peter was living in the Newburyport area and reading ancient writings from meditation masters, Peter was to have a profound spiritual experience and his journey back to his true self really began. Through the grace of a mediation master, Peter’s own inner spiritual energy (called kundalini) burst wide open and this energy flowed up his spine and chakras and caused incredible insights and experiences. It was later that Peter learned about ‘Kundalini Yoga’ and what had happened to him. Peter was to have profound experiences in long nights of meditation down by the Merrimac River and to have numerous past life experiences. To honor his spiritual awakening while in this historic seaport, he decided to use the name “MYSTICISM IN NEWBURYPORT” for the title. Peter’s first book was introduced at the Miami International Book Fair as a modern-day version of the Herman Hesse classic novel “SIDDHARTHA.” These tales are about all the great people from this time in Peter’s life and all the gifts and blessings that have flowed and continue to flow to this silly, Irish seeker. Peter hopes that his writings will be of some use to others or at least bring a smile to the reader’s face, about the unique life of just another seeker. This book is dedicated to Barbara Eleanor Parton. She is in the below pictures on our bikes...
