Book excerpt: What real boys have to say: "A lot of people use words like 'psycho' or 'wacko' to refer to people who are feeling glum or think they might want to take their own life. I think these sorts of slang terms create further isolation in a teen, and that's not what you want to do to a teen who already feels alone" —Alexander, 18, from a small town in the South "A guy is supposed to be strong, tall, and fast and have the qualities of an ideal athlete. At the same time he's supposed to be smart. He's expected to be nearly perfect." —Chandler, 14, from a suburb in the Northwest "What I hate about this school is that I am being picked on in the halls and just about everywhere else." —Cody, 14, from a suburb in New England In Real Boys, Dr. William Pollack explored the issues that most boys in our nation face today. In this fascinating follow-up bestseller, Pollack goes right to the source: boys ages 10 to 20-evoking the secret struggles and passions of America's adolescent males in their own words. Their voices are searingly honest and eager to be heard, revealing how society's outdated expectations force them to mask their feelings of isolation, depression, longing, love, and hope. We hear from boys and young men in big cities and small towns-including survivors of the Columbine High School massacre-who share compelling, extrordinarily candid stories about bullying, drugs, sports, school, parents, sex, love, and much more. Pollack also offers ways to start a dialog and illustrates through templates what to do in many situations. This is an eye-opening book for teenage boys and girls, but-with its insights and strategies for dealing with their issues-especially invaluable for all the people in their lives.

Book excerpt: By all appearances, DeBrand O’Donnell is living a fulfilling life. He has an average job, the swanky clothes, the perfect shoes, the accepting friends and a witty comeback for every occasion. He thinks his life is without fault, but in truth, his obsession with perfecting every trivial detail is merely a ruse to hide the fact his life is lacking a pulse. DeBrand begins to wake up to that fact when his girlfriend unexpectedly ends their relationship after a troublesome morning. Just as he’s coming to terms with that, he’s abducted by an alien. And not just any alien either. It’s a wisecracking, eight-foot-tall bipedal praying mantis-like creature named Bruno, and he’s not about to cut DeBrand any slack. Unlike most alien abductors, Bruno doesn’t want to probe DeBrand or study him in any way. He merely wants DeBrand to become his new emissary to Earth—for a good period of time. DeBrand wants no part of it and the more time he spends with Bruno and the current Terran emissary, Liza, the more he is presented with the fact that perhaps his pre-abduction life wasn’t so perfect after all. Maybe this is exactly what he needs to become a better-informed and more well-rounded individual—or maybe it’s all part of an elaborate plot by Bruno to colonize Earth and make Brand his footman.

Book excerpt: The paperback version of Endzone includes an all-new, 57-page Afterword covering Michigan's triumphant 2015 season, and never-dull 2016 off-season. Informed by exclusive, in-depth interviews with Jake Rudock, Blake O'Neill, Jake Butt, Jim and Sarah Harbaugh and his parents, the Afterword addresses the players' initial shock at Harbaugh's long practices, their renewed confidence, and the story behind the stunning finish to the Michigan State game, the Wolverines' comebacks against Minnesota and Indiana, and their Citrus Bowl victory over Florida. It also goes a long way to answering the question on everyone's mind: How long will Harbaugh stay in Ann Arbor? Bestselling author John U. Bacon's Endzone tells the story of how college football's most successful, richest and respected program almost lost all three in less than a decade - and entirely of its own doing. It is a story of hubris, greed, and betrayal - a tale more suited to Wall Street than the world's top public university. Endzone takes you inside the offices, the board rooms and the locker rooms of the University of Michigan Wolverines to see what happened, and why - with countless eye-opening, head-shaking scenes of conflict and conquest. But Endzone is also an inspiring story of redemption and revival. When those who loved Michigan football the most recognized it was being attacked from within, they rallied to reclaim the values that made it great for over a century -- values that went deeper than dollars. The list of heroes includes players, students, lettermen, fans and faculty - and the leaders who had the courage to listen to them. Their unprecedented uprising produced a new athletic director, and a new coach - the hottest in the land - who vindicated the fans' faith when he turned down more money and fame to return to the place he loved most: Michigan. If you love a good story, you'll want to dive into Endzone: The Rise, Fall and Return of Michigan Football.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To whom it may concern, “What are wisdom and intelligence” chronicles the life of an average American’s struggle through a society eclipsed by a manmade distortion of true reality. This 430 page book shows people the everyday rollercoaster of an average Jim in 65 chapters peppered with the morals, ethics and coping skills learned through life experiences. Written for my children, this book has an i...ntense feel of introspect; and by reading this material, it will take you back to a lot of your own memories and give YOU back to the basics of YOU. This book will show you the simple things that are becoming lost in a society distracted by the complexities of life itself. “What are wisdom and intelligence” doesn’t speak of the actual meaning of wisdom and intelligence but instead poses the question of whether our society needs to ask this question in the first place or does society automatically judge a person by there wisdom and intelligence? This unique view of the simple man’s life brings back a sense of integrity through making bad decisions and seeing the results first hand. These missteps are further compromised due to the apathy of our time. Society has become too complicated in its own intelligence. People with a lot of education think that they have all the answers and often times refuse to listen to “the common man’s” wisdom. Here in lies the premise of my book and the average “Jim’s” plight. My life and in turn my book is filled with “the simple things in life that save us all.” Integrity, morals, ethics and a simple smile are the tools of an average Jim. My experience is life itself, nothing more and nothing less. I was a Jack of all trades and master of none. I started as a Marine and then did a bit of everything; truck driver, cowboy, fence contractor, restaurant manager, and taxi driver just to name a few. Also at one point, I hitch hiked across the US. My strength and wisdom came with time, as it should. The common sense approach to life is what brings me around to today. My daily inspirational thoughts on the internet have become strength for many and in time, I hope, will be one of the strengths of my book. My public speaking, thus far, has been filled with music, laughter and inspiration. People are searching, in many ways, for answers when they are right there in front of them and that is what makes this book so inspirational and introspective. People see themselves through the words I give to my children and in turn find the joy in their own life. There are no magic words to restore the basic realities of life but in there own minds. All they need to do is take away the distortions of wisdom and intelligence. I truly appreciate you taking the time to look at my simple book of life and hope that it will be the inspiration for you to want more. Please feel free to contact me and hope to hear from you soon. Thank you so much for your time. Respectfully, James H. Kelley

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identity is never just an individual matter; it is intricately shaped by our experiences of social life. Taking a Symbolic Interactionist approach, and drawing on Goffman’s dramaturgical theory, Susie Scott explores the micro-social processes of interaction through which identities are created, maintained, challenged and reinvented. With a focus on empirical studies as illustrations, classic sociological theory is applied to contemporary examples. Each chapter focuses on a key dimension of how identities are negotiated in the drama of everyday life, from politeness and face-saving rituals to secrecy, lies and deception. Goffman’s ideas are explored in relation to self-presentation, role-making, group interaction and public behaviour, while language and discourse are shown to help people to give credible identity performances and to frame social situations. The book reveals how social selves change over the life course through stigma, labelling and deviant careers, and how life in a total institution can radically transform its members' identities. Through all of these processes, self and society are shown to be intertwined. This insightful approach will appeal to students taking a range of courses in the sociology of the self, identity, interaction and everyday life

Book excerpt: “My name is Ken and I will be your waiter for a long, long time . . .” That’s how Ken Untener introduced himself to the more than 6,000 people who attended his ordination as bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan, on November 24, 1980. The purpose of this book is to let Ken Untener tell the story of his vocation, priesthood, and ministry in his own words. And (ever the teacher), he often used stories of his life as a way to deliver a message from the Scripture and the strength of his faith. This book is not a memoir. Ken did a lot of preaching and rarely used a prepared text, but often recorded his homilies and talks on a microcassette recorder tucked in his pocket. He spoke from his heart and he used examples from everyday life, sometimes even using an incident that had just happened to him that day.
