Book Synopsis Envisioning African Intersex by : Amanda Lock Swarr
Download or read book Envisioning African Intersex written by Amanda Lock Swarr and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-30 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1600s, travelers, scientists, and doctors have claimed that “hermaphroditism” and intersex are disproportionately common among black South Africans. In Envisioning African Intersex Amanda Lock Swarr debunks this claim by interrogating contemporary intersex medicine and demonstrating its indivisibility from colonial ideologies and scientific racism. Tracing the history of racialized research that underpins medical and scientific premises of gendered bodies, Swarr analyzes decolonial actions by intersex South Africans from the 1990s to the present, centering the work of organizers such as Sally Gross, the first openly intersex activist in Africa and a global pioneer of intersex legislation. Swarr also explores African social media activism that advocates for intersex justice and challenges the mistreatment of South African Olympian Caster Semenya. Throughout, Swarr shows how activists displace doctors’ impositions to fashion self-representation. By unseating colonial visions of gender, intersex South Africans are actively disrupting medical violence, decolonizing gender binaries, and inciting policy changes. All author royalties from Envisioning African Intersex will be donated to Intersex South Africa.
Book Synopsis Gender-Based Violence in Children’s Sport by : Gretchen Kerr
Download or read book Gender-Based Violence in Children’s Sport written by Gretchen Kerr and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-28 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the major forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in children’s sport, including sexual, physical, and psychological violence and neglect. It reviews the historical, sociocultural, and political influences on violence towards children, and sets out future agendas for research and practice to eliminate GBV in sport. The book argues that for GBV to occur and be sustained over time, it must be facilitated by a system that enables this violence, protects the perpetrator, disables bystanders, silences the victims, and/or fails to provide a structure by which to address victims’ or bystanders’ concerns. Drawing on empirical research from across a range of disciplines, including sport sociology, sport psychology, developmental psychology, and coaching, and examining real life case studies of GBV in sport at all levels, the book makes a powerful case for radical change in our current systems of sport governance, safeguarding, and athlete welfare. This is important reading for any student, researcher, policy-maker, coach, welfare officer or counsellor with an interest in sport, gender studies, safeguarding, criminology, or sociology. John O’Sullivan shares the secrets of the coaches and parents who have not only raised elite athletes, but have done so by creating an environment that promotes positive core values and teaches life lessons instead of focusing on wins and losses, scholarships, and professional aspirations. Book excerpt: Cool! You're reading the back of my book which means the front caught your eye. Now you're just about ready to open it up and, well, since I still have your attention... So this is my first book, a lifetime in the making. And you won't find any fancy reviews by important people written here. What you will see is my invitation especially for you. Between the covers is an eclectic collection of true stories extracted from my life and imaginati on. It's not a "how-to" book or a dramatic tale of triumph. It's simply thoughts about everyday life that most anyone can relate to yet spend little time putting much thought into. This compilation of short stories won't change your life. But I'm pretty sure it will warm your heart, make you smile and make you think; you might even shed a tear or two. And it just might inspire you to tweak your outlook on life just a little bit. That, my friend, is up to you. So, steal a few moments for yourself and curl up with Life in Flip Flops. And if a bon fire with s'mores breaks out halfway through, then you're right where you need to be. Enjoy!
