Book excerpt: In the 1980s, Robert Haas was responsible for a diet revolution with his number one best-seller, Eat to Win. Now, with Eat to Win for Permanent Fat Loss, he shows not only how to lose weight and dramatically improve your performance in all areas of life, but how to keep the fat off -- forever. With all the recent diet trends -- Eat more protein! Eat more pasta! Fat is your friend! Stay away from carbs! -- it's difficult to determine which program will actually deliver results. Robert Haas's program does just that. Based on cutting-edge research on how and why our bodies use carbs, proteins, and fats, Haas created a "Mediterrasian" diet that combines the best and healthiest aspects of diets from the regions where people live the longest: the Mediterranean and Asia. His approach features a ratio of 50 percent carbohydrates, which includes grains, fruits, and vegetables; 25 percent protein; and 25 percent fat. Haas also provides the specific scientific reasons why this is the ultimate ratio for maximum energy, fitness, and permanent fat loss. Eat to Win for Permanent Fat Loss offers a remarkably flexible, healthy food plan that encourages the use of both the new "functional" foods (things like tofu hot dogs and soy-chicken nuggets) and treats that most diet plans restrict or forbid entirely, such as chocolate, wine, and coffee. In fact, Haas shows why enjoying chocolate and coffee every day can actually make you healthier, providing both satisfaction and valuable phytonutrients that can prevent illness. "Cheating" is built into the plan, so if you need a true fast-food hamburger (instead of the equally fast Big Max Burger, one of more than fifty recipes included) you can have it!It's the kind of eating plan that truly works for the entire family. As for exercise, Haas's recommendation is also simple: Burn a minimum of 300 calories -- the equivalent of forty-five minutes of walking -- throughout the course of the day, through any activity you choose. Haas's combined food and exercise program can and will change lives. Lose excess body fat and build stronger muscles starting today Eat to Win for Permanent Fat Loss is the first book to explain clearly the key to losing the fat and keeping it off: controlling your body's glycogen levels. Glycogen, the form in which your body stores carbohydrates, helps control appetite, fullness, and fat burning. When you eat according to Robert Haas's plan, you regulate your body's glycogen level and force it to burn away any excess fat. Best of all, the plan allows you to indulge in such forbidden foods as chocolate and coffee while growing slimmer and healthier. You will also learn how the latest functional foods and beverages can be used to: Boost energy and enduranceImprove memory and learningIncrease sex driveSo whether you are a weekend warrior or a world-class dieter, Eat to Win for Permanent Fat Loss will help you achieve your health and fitness goals once and for all.

How to push through that frustrating plateau? What to do when nothing else is working? Here, Smith has created a weight loss program that uses all he knows about strategic dieting in one plan--like putting all the best players on the field at once to create a can't lose combination. Shred combines a low GI diet, meal spacing, and meal replacements. Those who follow Shred will constantly be eating (every three and a half hours!), four meals or meal replacements (soups, smoothies, shakes) and 3 snacks a day, over a six week program. Shred also introduces Dr. Ian's concept of "Diet Confusion". Diet Confusion, like muscle confusion, tricks the body and revs up its performance. In the same way you need to vary your workout to see results, switch up your food intake to boost your metabolism. No matter how often or how unsuccessfully you've dieted before, Shred: The Revolutionary Diet will change your life. Shred has taken the internet by storm, and thousands have already joined Dr. Ian's Shredder Nation, losing an average of four inches, two sizes or twenty pounds in six weeks. Utilizing the detox from Fat Smash Diet, the intense cleanse of Extreme Fat Smash, and varying food of The 4 Day Diet, Shred is a six week plan to a new way of life!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first substantial study in any language of one of revolutionary Russia's most distinguished and controversial engineers - Iurii Vladimirovich Lomonosov (1876-1952). Not only does it provide an outline of his remarkable life and career, it also explores the relationship between science, technology and transport that developed in late tsarist and early Soviet Russia. Lomonosov's importance extends well beyond his scientific and engineering achievements thanks to the rich variety and public prominence of his professional and political activities. His generation - Lenin's generation - was inevitably at the forefront of Russian life from the 1910s to the 1930s, and Lomonosov took his place there as one of the country's best known and ultimately notorious engineers. As well as an innovative engineer who campaigned to enhance the role of science, he played a major role in shaping and administering the Russian railways, and undertook several diplomatic and scientific missions to the West during the early years of the Revolution. Falling from political favour during an assignment in Germany (1923-1927), he achieved notoriety in Russia as a 'non-returner' by apparently declining to return home. Thereby escaping probable arrest and execution, he began a new life abroad (1927-1952) which included a research post at the California Institute of Technology in 1929-1930, collaborative projects with the famous physicist P.L. Kapitsa in Cambridge, a long-time association with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London, and work for the British War Office during the Second World War. From Marxist revolutionary to American academic, this study reveals Lomonosov's extraordinary life. Drawing on a wide variety of official Russian sources, as well as Lomonosov's own diaries and memoirs, a vivid portrait of his life is presented, offering a better understanding of how science, technology and politics interacted in early-twentieth-century Russia.
