Book Synopsis The Sky is Always There by : Camilla Carr
Download or read book The Sky is Always There written by Camilla Carr and published by Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd. This book was released on 2008 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1997-98 Camilla Carr and Jon James set off as volunteers in a £500 Lada stacked high with toys, games, footballs, paints and a parachute. Their destination was Chechnya and their aim was to work with children who had been traumatised by war. After working for two months setting up and teaching in a rehabilitation centre and watching the children begin to smile and play again, they were kidnapped by Chechen guerrillas. There followed fourteen months of incarceration in homes that varied from a concrete box with no natural light or fresh air, to a pink trompe la oeil bedroom via a sauna and various cellars. They experienced everything from rape and mental torture to moments of compassion and kindness. They survived by using tools such as tai chi, yoga, meditation and humour; and through creating a dialogue with their captors, looking beneath their masks of fear and anger to reach the small flame of love and laughter unquenched by the demonising nature of war.

Download or read book Broken written by J. Matthew Nespoli and published by World Audience Inc. This book was released on 2010 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken chronicles the tragedies of several strangers who are trying to find happiness in the city of Los Angeles. As their paths cross with one another, each of them becomes an integral thread in the fabric that unifies them and helps them heal. Skye is a teenage homeless musician battling a drug addiction who dreams of unattainable rock stardom. She's befriended by Amber, a young mother on the run from two dangerous men from her past. The two girls form a mutually indispensable bond, one that could ultimately save them. Dylan is a pseudo-intellectual-Chuck Palahniuk wanna-be, and a total cynic. He lives with TJ, an out of work actor, who fails auditions by day, and wears a hamburger suit outside a burger joint at the mall by night. TJ and Dylan are artistic failures in need of a muse to kick start their careers. Broken follows several other interesting individuals (all based on real people), each with their own humorous twisted narrative as they try to put the pieces of their lives back together.
Book Synopsis Braver Than You Think by : Maggie Downs
Download or read book Braver Than You Think written by Maggie Downs and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly married and established in her career as an award–winning newspaper journalist, Maggie Downs quits her job, sells her belongings, and embarks on the solo trip of a lifetime: Her mother’s. As a child, Maggie Downs often doubted that she would ever possess the courage to visit the destinations her mother dreamed of one day seeing. “You are braver than you think,” her mother always insisted. That statement would guide her as, over the course of one year, Downs backpacked through seventeen countries―visiting all the places her mother, struck with early–onset Alzheimer’s disease, could not visit herself―encountering some of the world’s most striking locales while confronting the slow loss of her mother. Interweaving travelogue with family memories, Braver Than You Think takes the reader hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, white–water rafting on the Nile, volunteering at a monkey sanctuary in Bolivia, praying at an ashram in India, and fleeing the Arab Spring in Egypt. By embarking on an international journey, Downs learned to make every moment count―traveling around the globe and home again, losing a parent while discovering the world. Perfect for fans of adventure memoirs like Wild and Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube, Braver Than You Think explores grief and loss with tenderness, clarity, and humor, and offers a truly incredible roadmap to coping with the unimaginable.
