Book excerpt: The traditional Chinese city is undergoing an identity crisis. With the rapid development taking place, there is growing conflict between this new building and the existing urban heritage. An appropriate approach, both in design and in legislation, is urgently needed to deal with this problem. Furthermore, although Chinese cities have a remarkably long history, existing methods of urban form study in China are either descriptive or loosely structured, whereas a comprehensive methodology is necessary to 'read' Chinese urban forms in a consistent way, and thus inform designers and policy-makers. Chinese Urban Design targets these problems and offers an analytic and conceptual framework for both urban investigation and consequent design. Firstly summarising traditional urban design principles and how Chinese cities have transformed over time, it then introduces and offers a theoretic ground and scientific methodology for understanding the evolution of urban forms, initially developed in western countries. It demonstrates the theoretic model via real cases - from the city of Nanjing - and establishes a direct link between understanding of urban forms and design development. By providing a cross-cultural investigation on the theories and methods of urban typology and morphology, this book aims to suggest best future practice for urban design in China. It explores how urban designers and local policy-makers can produce culturally responsive designs and how they might better understand the formation and transformation of the built environment in which their creations sit. It also looks at how local residents' lifestyle, culture and demands might be reflected and respected in design process.

All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: A precious resource and public asset, the urban waterfront is crucial to shaping the city image. It also contributes to quality of life of the city's inhabitants and visitors. However, many waterfront landscapes are only superficially pleasant; some of these lack other significant qualities needed by the public. Designers and end-users may have different notions on waterfront qualities, and communication gaps possibly exist between the two groups. Designers might formulate objectives and ideas on waterfront qualities without adequately understanding the true needs and preferences of users, which encompass aspects deeper than merely visual features. This means that perceptions on certain "latent" waterfront attributes need to be studied. The designers should create more human-oriented waterfront landscapes by gaining a better understanding of real user needs. Public perceptions regarding waterfront landscape and the key aspects associated with those perceptions should be studied. Therefore, the main objective of the present research is to explore an alternative approach to waterfront design through the eyes of users. Tianjin Haihe riverfront was selected for a case study, which consisted of two stages. First, a contextual study included a historical review of the interactive relationship between the city and river. The major forces driving recent redevelopments, including economic, social, environmental, and cultural ones, were identified. Then, the comprehensive master plan and major achievements were critically reviewed. Second, a field study was conducted on October 2009, during which four important aspects of the urban waterfront were specifically examined. These aspects were access, use, comfort, and image. First-hand empirical data were collected using a combined approach involving observation, attitude survey, cognitive mapping, and photo simulation. In all, 110 on-site and 60 off-site completed questionnaires were obtained. Data were analysed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. In general, majority of the respondents were satisfied with the updated waterfront environment. Significant changes were perceived and appreciated. However, the current landscape is not yet ideal. The riverfront is more accessible but lacks vitality: it is simply a "passing by" space rather than a vibrant destination. Successful features (and unsuccessful issues), related to the four key aspects of access, use, comfort, and image were addressed. Correlations between certain design features and emotional reactions were explored. Fiver factors concerning visual perceptions of waterfront landscape were explored: preference, complexity, style, greenery, and openness. Patterns of perceptions among three groups of observers (i.e., local non-professionals, local professionals, and non-local professionals) were found, based on their familiarity with the site and professional background. Local non-professionals seemed more generous in their perceptions. A tendency to over-praise the waterfront settings was apparent. However, they were not as sensitive to aesthetic issues. Non-locals professionals seemed more critical, perhaps leading them to underestimate the waterfront landscape. Abstract: In theoretical development history, the issue of "urban public space" is one of the central themes in the domain of urban planning and design, which has played as a medium for interdisciplinary discussions on the relationship between built environment and the social relations behind. In present Chinese cities, the market economic reform in recent decades has brought profound impacts on Chinese society, which is mostly represented by an infusing of private realm to the universal public realm in the planned economic era at all dimensions of space production. However, the production of urban space in China under market economic reform is not lead by an articulated theory of public space. The notion of "Chinese urban public space" remains as a technical definition, and the essential attribute, namely, the "publicness" of urban public space, seems to be conspicuously absent from theoretical discourses in present Chinese urban planning and design. This dissertation is an empirical study on Chinese urban public space in cities under market economic reform. It aims to find out how space production mechanisms in the economic reform period constitute the nature-the attribute of "publicness"-of Chinese urban public space. The study is built upon a set of theoretical underpinnings- the public space theories in urban studies and the theories on the relationship between built environment and the socioeconomic background. In particular, the study adopts the sociospatial perspective of the "production of space" theory established by French philosopher Henry Lefebvre as the theoretical rationale for the methodology. It takes a case study method for its empirical exploration, for which, the city of Shenzhen is chosen as the case study area. Through case investigations, the study demonstrates that the universal socialist publicness of Chinese urban public space in the planned economic era has disappeared with the market economic reform. The production of urban public space in Chinese cities is no longer a technical issue dealing with merely the physical dimension of space, instead, it represents a process of conflicts and contradictions, in which different actors, interests, and ideologies fight as well as interact for the use, interest, and representation of space, and wherein sociospatial relations are reconstructed. Further, through investigation on the institutional forces behind space production, the study demonstrates that there are institutional paradoxes in present Chinese space production mechanisms, which are roots of the conflicts and contradictions in the production of public space. These paradoxes have led to a general "loss" of "publicness" in Chinese urban public space, which are represented in some common and yet fundamental aspects of changes. The findings of this study are considered to have important implications for understanding the nature of Chinese urban public space in Chinese cities in the market economic reform era. It also contributes to a better understanding on the space production mechanisms as well as their relationship with the social-economic settings in present Chinese transitional society.
