Book excerpt: "In this new collection of short fiction, award-winning author Michael Fillerup explores the shuttered landscapes of Mormon culture where feel-good clichés falter and the faithful are scorched in the refiner's fire. The seventeen stories in Fillerup's new compilation run the gamut in length, style, and voice, but all share an unapologetic authenticity. Whether examining the hypocrisy of sexism, the crucible of forgiveness, or the heartbreak of parenthood, Fillerup leads readers through a labyrinth of emotions but never feeds them to the Minotaur. Light shines at the end of each tortuous tunnel and, to the thoughtful reader, genuine joy"--

Book excerpt: An Entertainment Weekly Top 10 Romance of 2018! I'm not a good man, and I've never pretended to be. I don't believe in goodness or God or any happy ending that isn't paid for in advance. In fact, I've got my own personal holy trinity: in the name of money, sex, and Macallan 18, amen. So when the gorgeous, brilliant Zenny Iverson asks me to teach her about sex, I want to say yes, I really do. Unfortunately, there are several reasons to say no--reasons that even a very bad man like myself can't ignore. 1. She's my best friend's little sister. 2. She's too young for me. Like way too young. 3. She's a nun. Or about to be anyway. But I want her. I want her even with my best friend and God in the way, I want to teach her and touch her and love her, and I know that makes me something much worse than a very bad man. It makes me a sinner. And it's those very sins that are about to save me... ***Sinner is a standalone companion to Priest about Father Bell's brother Sean. You do not have to read Priest or Midnight Mass to read Sinner***
Book Synopsis Same Call, Different Men by : Mary Gautier
Download or read book Same Call, Different Men written by Mary Gautier and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far-reaching changes continue to take place in the American priesthood. Building on insights gained from four previous surveys, Same Call, Different Men uses fresh data from a 2009 survey-jointly implemented by the National Federation of Priest's Councils and the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate-in which 900 priests shared attitudes and stories about their lives and ministry. Among topics covered are the challenges of ministry with fewer ordinations and larger parishes, ministering to an increasingly multicultural laity, collaboration with lay leaders, and personal reflections on the sexual abuse issue. It also relates the many satisfactions of being a priest, one who brings Christ to others and who is invited into many profound moments of individual lives.

Book Synopsis Last Priest Standing and Other Stories by : Richard Infante
Download or read book Last Priest Standing and Other Stories written by Richard Infante and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven Stories of Grace The list of authors who have illuminated the life of the Catholic clergy is impressive: G.K. Chesterton, Georges Bernanos, J.F. Powers, Edwin O'Connor, and Graham Greene. To that list you can now add Richard Infante, a priest himself and a master of the art of fiction. This volume gathers his already-published stories with a new novella, "Saints and Sojourners." The drama in the stories emerges from matters peculiar to priestly life, yet applicable to every vocation. In priesthood as in family life, there are generation gaps. There are crises. There are infidelities - and near-infidelities. And there is always grace, though it sometimes arrives in a distressing disguise. "These stories are something more than realist. They're real. And so they hit a reader not the way words usually do, but rather the way life does." From the foreword by Mike Aquilina
Book Synopsis Woman, Women, and the Priesthood in the Trinitarian Theology of Elisabeth Behr-Sigel by : Sarah Hinlicky Wilson
Download or read book Woman, Women, and the Priesthood in the Trinitarian Theology of Elisabeth Behr-Sigel written by Sarah Hinlicky Wilson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elisabeth Behr-Sigel (1907-2005), a convert to Orthodoxy in her early twenties and a central figure of Orthodox theology among Russian émigrés in Paris, first began to reflect on the question of women in the priesthood in 1976. Initially supporting the general consensus that priesthood would be impossible for the Orthodox, she came to retract this view, finding a basis for female ordination in women's distinct spiritual charisms. Behr-Sigel later shifted the foundation of her case to personhood, inspired by the work of fellow Orthodox theologian Vladimir Lossky, and arrived at the conclusion that all the Orthodox arguments against the ordination of women were, in fact, heretical at root. In this volume, Wilson analyzes all of Behr-Sigel's writings about women and the priesthood across the whole sweep of her career, demonstrating the development of her thought on women over the last thirty years of her life. She evaluates her relationship to feminism, Protestantism and movements within Orthodoxy, finally drawing conclusions about this much-contested matter for the ongoing debate in both the East and the West.

Book excerpt: As I go on in this life, a verse from Psalm 16 is my story: You will show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy. That path has taken me on adventures wanted and unwanted, and led to dreams that came true and dreams that died along the way. That is my story so far. Ive come to know that each of us is a story and how we tell our story makes a difference as we walk through this world. We all have broken pieces of ourselves that weve left along the path, but we can decide whether to pick them up and put them together in a new way and go on, or we can go on with the broken pieces hurting us with every step. Thats our choice, and with the help of God and companions along the way, the grace and fullness of healing and joy can come.
