Book excerpt: Seventeen essays make up the body of this anthology. Most of the authors are Latin Americans (although some of them work in other regions), and thus we might say that this volume is, in a very approximate sense, a showcase of recent Latin-American ontology and metaphysics. The remaining authors--Pierre Aubenque, Barry Smith, Lorenzo Peña and James Hamilton--are distinguished teachers who have had important contacts with the Latin-American philosophical community. The articles in this anthology address some of the central questions in ontology and metaphysics: the possibility of a science of being (Aubenque), the different possible approaches to ontology (Hurtado), the recent application of ontology to informatics (Smith), guise theory and its Leibnizian antecedents (Herrera), the reduction of space and time to phenomenological properties (Rodríguez Larreta), the Newtonian ontology of space and time (Benítez and Robles), the relation between truth and the so-called "truth-makers" (Rodríguez Pereyra), the ontological position of the Pyrrhonic skeptic (Junqueira Smith), the limits and difficulties of metaphysical realism (Cabanchik, Pereda), the defense of physicalist or emergentist positions regarding the mental (Pérez), the metaphysical nature of persons (Naishtat), the ontology of cultural entities (Peña), political ontology (Nudler), the relation between ontology and literature (Hamilton), the ontology of art (Tomasini). Some of the works (e.g., those Aubenque and Robles) approach the question from a historical perspective: others examine the most recent philosophical literature on the problems focalized (e.g., those by Pérez and Rodríguez Pereyra), and others offer new approaches (e.g., those of Rodríguez Larreta, Peña or Nudler) to a specific problematic area.

Interior designers and architects use them as a means to keep up with the latest trends in furniture design. The series has been published since 1977, to date, seven Design Books have been published, the last in 1996. The series is being expanded in response to reader requests. Past design books were basically a catalogue of woodworking projects selected by a panel of experts. "Design Book Eight" will depart from that tradition by featuring fewer examples, but offering design talk about each piece as well as detail shots. The book is organized by class of furniture: Tables, Chairs, Desks, Cabinets, Book cases, Home Entertainment Furniture, Beds and Bureaus.

Book excerpt: The instant New York Times bestseller about one man's battle to save hundreds of jobs by demonstrating the greatness of American business. The Bassett Furniture Company was once the world's biggest wood furniture manufacturer. Run by the same powerful Virginia family for generations, it was also the center of life in Bassett, Virginia. But beginning in the 1980s, the first waves of Asian competition hit, and ultimately Bassett was forced to send its production overseas. One man fought back: John Bassett III, a shrewd and determined third-generation factory man, now chairman of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co, which employs more than 700 Virginians and has sales of more than $90 million. In Factory Man, Beth Macy brings to life Bassett's deeply personal furniture and family story, along with a host of characters from an industry that was as cutthroat as it was colorful. As she shows how he uses legal maneuvers, factory efficiencies, and sheer grit and cunning to save hundreds of jobs, she also reveals the truth about modern industry in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique and engaging account of local urban decision-making within the globalizing world High Point, North Carolina, is known as the “Furniture Capital of the World.” Once a manufacturing stronghold, most of its furniture factories have closed over the past forty years, with production shipped off to low-wage countries. Yet as manufacturing left, the city tightened its hold on a biannual global exposition that serves as the world’s furniture fashion runway. At the High Point Market, visitors from more than one hundred nations traverse twelve million square feet of meticulous design. Downtown buildings—once courthouses, movie theaters, post offices, and gas stations—are now chic showroom spaces, even as many sit empty between each exposition. In Showroom City, John Joe Schlichtman applies an ethnographic lens to the global exposition’s relationship with High Point after it defeated rival Chicago in the 1960s and established itself as the world’s dominant furniture center. In recent decades, following trends in global finance, private equity firms were increasingly behind downtown High Point’s real estate transactions, coordinated by buyers far removed from the region. Then, in one massive transaction in 2011, a firm funded by Bain Capital purchased every major showroom building, and the majority of downtown real estate was under one owner. Showroom City is a story of exclusionary growth and unchecked development, of a city flailing to fill the void left by its dwindling factories. But beyond that Schlichtman engages the general lessons behind both High Point’s deindustrialization and its stunning reinvention as a furniture fashion, merchandising, and design node. With great nuance, he delves deeply to reveal how power operates locally and how citizens may affirm, exploit, influence, and resist the takeover of their community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the very best conservation and environmental policy-making efforts, at least 80,000 acres of tropical rainforest disappear each day. If action is not taken now, experts estimate that the world’s rainforests will mostly disappear within 50 years. Currently, the destruction of tropical forests is responsible for 17 percent of man-made carbon emissions-more than what comes from all the world’s cars, airplanes and ships combined! Tropical rainforests need our help-and that’s where 50 Simple Steps to Save the World’s Rainforests comes in. The future of the world’s rainforests lies to a large extent in the collective hands of consumers and how they shop, since demand is what fuels the forces driving deforestation-agriculture, logging, and resource extraction. Through the 50-step journey, you will learn how, as a consumer, you may unwittingly support rainforest destruction and more importantly, precisely how you can make different choices that help save rainforests. For example, you will learn how your paper use and purchases of rayon clothing affect Indonesian rainforests where Sumatran tigers are critically endangered or how simply eating Brazil nuts helps save the Amazon rainforest. You will discover how the cultivation of palm oil, a common ingredient in confections, baked goods, soaps and biofuels, is fueling rampant deforestation in Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea and how you can avoid it. 50 Simple Steps to Save the Rainforests is the ultimate primer for anyone wanting to take action to help save this ecosystem, which is so critical to the future of mankind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking beyond broad theories of globalization, this volume examines the specific effects of globalizing forces on the southern United States. Eighteen essays approach globalization from a variety of perspectives, addressing such topics as relations between global and local communities; immigration, particularly of Latinos and Asians; local industry in a time of globalization; power and confrontation between rural and urban worlds; race, ethnicity, and organizing for social justice; and the assimilation of foreign-born professionals. From portraits of the political and economic positions of Latinos in Miami and Houston to the effects of mountaintop removal on West Virginia communities, these snapshots of globalization across a broad southern ground help redirect the study of the South in response to how the South itself is being reshaped by globalization in the twenty-first century.
