Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonderlands of the Wild West: With Sketches of the Mormons "of antres vast and deserts idle, Rough quarries, rocks, and hills whose heads touch heaven, It was my hint to speak; And of the cannibals that each other eat, The Anthropophagi, and men whose heads Do grow beneath their shoulders." - Othello. A sojourn for nearly seven years in Utah, as one of the Board of Commissioners appointed by the President of the United States, under the provisions of the so-called "Edmunds Anti-polygamy Law" of Congress, has afforded the writer of these Sketches ample opportunities to become acquainted with the Mormons or Latter-day Saints, as well as some of the most remarkable and picturesque scenery of the Wild West. As to the people called Mormons, I shall "speak of them as they are - nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice." I shall condemn where censure is just, and give credit where it is due. It is seldom that we find great bodies or classes of people as bad as they are painted by their enemies. Much that is said concerning an unpopular and hated people should be received cum grano, for it is easy as well as agreeable for many persons to deal largely in hyperbole and fiction against those whom it is the fashion to despise. The Mormons have grievous faults, and grievously have they answered for them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: If you take Boston's Blue Line to its northern end, you'll reach the Wonderland stop. Few realize that a twenty-three-acre amusement park once sat nearby—the largest in New England, and grander than any of the Coney Island parks that inspired it. Opened in Revere on Memorial Day in 1906 to great fanfare, Wonderland offered hundreds of thousands of visitors recreation by the sea, just a short distance from downtown Boston. The story of the park's creation and wild, but brief, success is full of larger-than-life characters who hoped to thrill attendees and rake in profits. Stephen R. Wilk describes the planning and history of the park, which featured early roller coasters, a scenic railway, a central lagoon in which a Shoot-the-Chutes boat plunged, an aerial swing, a funhouse, and more. Performances ran throughout the day, including a daring Fires and Flames show; a Wild West show; a children's theater; and numerous circus acts. While nothing remains of what was once called "Boston's Regal Home of Pleasure" and the park would close in 1910, this book resurrects Wonderland by transporting readers through its magical gates.

Book Synopsis Modernism in Wonderland by : John D. Morgenstern

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retracing the steps of a surprising array of 20th-century writers who ventured into the fantastical, topsy-turvy world of Lewis Carroll's fictions, this book demonstrates the full extent of Carroll's legacy in literary modernism. Testing the authority of language and mediation through extensive word-play and genre-bending, the Alice books undoubtedly prefigure literary modernism at its upmost experimental. The collection's chapters look beyond literary style to show how Carroll's writings had a far-reaching impact on modern life, from commercial culture to politics and philosophy. This book shows us the Alice we recognize from Carroll's novels but also the Alice modernist writers encountered through the looking-glass of these extraliterary discourses. Recovering a common touchstone between the likes of T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, W. H. Auden, and writers conventionally regarded on the periphery of modernist studies, such as Dorothy L. Sayers, Sylvia Plath, Jorge Luis Borges, Flann O'Brien, and Vladimir Nabokov, this volume ultimately provides a new entry-point into a more broadly conceptualised global modernism.
Download or read book American West written by Karen R. Jones and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-21 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American West used to be a story of gunfights, glory, wagon trails, and linear progress. Historians such as Frederick Jackson Turner and Hollywood movies such as Stagecoach (1939) and Shane (1953) cast the trans-Mississippi region as a frontier of epic proportions where 'savagery' met 'civilization' and boys became men.During the late 1980s, this old way of seeing the West came under heavy fire. Scholars such as Patricia Nelson Limerick and Richard White forged a fresh story of the region, a new vision of the West, based around the conquest of peoples and landscapes. This book explores the bipolar world of Turner's Old West and Limerick's New West and reveals the values and ambiguities associated with both historical traditions. Sections on Lewis and Clark, the frontier and the cowboy sit alongside work on Indian genocide and women's trail diaries. Images of the region as seen through the arcade Western, Hollywood film and Disney theme parks confirm the West as a symbolic and contested landscape.Tapping into popular fascination with the Cowboy, Hollywood movies, the Indian Wars, and Custer's Last Stand, the authors show the reader how to deconstruct the imagery and reality surrounding Western history.Key Features*Uses popular subjects (the Cowboy, Hollywood westerns, the Indian Wars, and Custer's Last Stand) to enliven the text*Includes 13 b+w illustrations*Interdisciplinary approach covers film, literature, art and historical artefacts
