Book excerpt: Old Norse literature abounds with descriptions of magic acts that allow ritual specialists of various kinds to manipulate the world around them, see into the future or the distant past, change weather conditions, influence the outcomes of battles, and more. While magic practitioners are known under myriad terms, the most iconic of them is the völva. As the central figure of the famous mythological poem Völuspá (The Prophecy of the Völva), the völva commands both respect and fear. In non-mythological texts similar women are portrayed as crucial albeit somewhat peculiar members of society. Always veiled in mystery, the völur and their kind have captured the academic and popular imagination for centuries. Bringing together scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds, this volume aims to provide new insights into the reality of magic and its agents in the Viking world, beyond the pages of medieval texts. It explores new trajectories for the study of past mentalities, beliefs, and rituals as well as the tools employed in these practices and the individuals who wielded them. In doing so, the volume engages with several topical issues of Viking Age research, including the complex entanglements of mind and materiality, the cultural attitudes to animals and the natural world, and the cultural constructions of gender and sexuality. By addressing these complex themes, it offers a nuanced image of the völva and related magic workers in their cultural context. The volume is intended for a broad, diverse, and international audience, including experts in the field of Viking and Old Norse studies but also various non-professional history enthusiasts. The Norse Sorceress: Mind and Materiality in the Viking World is a key output of the project Tanken bag Tingene (Thoughts behind Things) conducted at the National Museum of Denmark from 2020 to 2023 and funded by the Krogager Foundation.

They stopped in front of the movie theater and looked at the list. The two looked at each other and walked away. Susan eyed a human skeleton through the arcade's windows. She elbowed Alf and he looked at her. When Susan had his attention she whispered, "Let's eat him when he comes out." Her eyes pointed out the human skeleton. Following Susan's eyes, Alf saw the human skeleton and started drooling. "He looks good enough to eat." Alf and Susan sat on the wooden bench opposite the entrance, so they could see the human skeleton through the window. They sat there grooming each other's heads like a pair of chimpanzees. Both ate the fleas taken from the other's head.

'He saw the dark bird glide into the sun and glow like a bird of flaming gold' Ranging from the Jim Crow South to a Harlem bingo parlour, from the hobo jungles of the Great Depression to Wales during the Second World War, they all display the musically layered voices, soaring language and sheer ebullience that made Ellison a giant of twentieth-century American writing. Written early in Ellison's career, several of these fourteen stories were unpublished in his lifetime, including 'A Storm of Blizzard Proportions' which features in this collection for the first time. Book excerpt: Stranded in a stormy corner of the North Atlantic midway between Norway and Iceland, the Faroe Islands are part of "the unknown Western Europe"—a region of recent economic development and subnational peoples facing uncertain futures. This book tells the remarkable story of the Faroes' cultural survival since their Viking settlement in the early ninth century. At first an unruly little republic, the islands soon became tributary to Norway, dwindled into a Danish-Norwegian mercantilist fiefdom, and in 1816 were made a Danish province. Today, however, they are an internally self-governing Danish dependency, with a prosperous export fishery and a rich intellectual life carried out in the local language, Faroese. Jonathan Wylie, an anthropologist who has done extensive field work in the Faroes, creates here a vivid picture of everyday life and affairs of state over the centuries, using sources ranging from folkloric texts to parliamentary minutes and from census data to travelers' tales. He argues that the Faroes' long economic stagnation preserved an archaic way of life that was seriously threatened by their economic renaissance in the nineteenth century, especially as this was accompanied by a closer political incorporation into Denmark. The Faroese accommodated increasingly profound social change by selectively restating their literary and historical heritage. Their success depended on domesticating a Danish ideology glorifying "folkish" ways and so claiming a nationality separate from Denmark's. The book concludes by comparing the Faroes' nationality-without-nationhood to the contrasting situations of their closest neighbors, Iceland and Shetland. The Faroe Islands is an important contribution to Scandinavian as well as regional and ethnic studies and to the growing literature combining the insights and techniques of anthropology and history. Engagingly written and richly illustrated, it will also appeal to scholars in other fields and to anyone intrigued by the lands and peoples of the North.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Black Bitch and Other Stories; a collection of twenty three short stories; presents a kaleidoscope of strange sights and impressions that P. Raja observed and felt. He crafts his stories in such a way that life appears in his short stories in all its vastness and mystery. He writes with no trace of false modesty. The real-life incidents that sneak in are always the things that disturb us enough to wind their way into the space of P. Raja’s stories. True; our daily lives are mostly a mixture of drab routine and unpleasant surprises. However; from time to time; something unexpected happens; which makes life worth living. This is precisely what P. Raja’s stories portray. He inhabits a very familiar cosmos and his stories almost always bubble with a socio-cultural undercurrent. He always thinks of people and places familiar to him because that is his own experiential base. Rarely do some stories chart an unknown territory and the reader simply journeys with a certain lesser known reality where ghosts are staring us in the face. His stories; his words; the wonderful characters; offer us the surprise; the excitement; the sense of wonder that kindle the fire of human imagination. Collection of must read heart touching stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Penguin Classics' most popular translations—now also in our elegant black spine dress Ryünosuke Akutagawa is one of Japan's foremost stylists—a modernist master whose short stories are marked by highly original imagery, cynicism, beauty and wild humour. "Rashömon"and "In a Bamboo Grove" inspired Kurosawa's magnificent film and depict a past in which morality is turned upside down, while tales such as "The Nose," "O-Gin" and "Loyalty" paint a rich and imaginative picture of a medieval Japan peopled by Shoguns and priests, vagrants and peasants. And in later works such as "Death Register," "The Life of a Stupid Man," and "Spinning Gears," Akutagawa drew from his own life to devastating effect, revealing his intense melancholy and terror of madness in exquisitely moving impressionistic stories. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supernaturally tinged stories from William T. Vollmann, author of the National Book Award winner Europe Central In this magnificent new work of fiction, his first in nine years, celebrated author William T. Vollmann offers a collection of ghost stories linked by themes of love, death, and the erotic. A Bohemian farmer’s dead wife returns to him, and their love endures, but at a gruesome price. A geisha prolongs her life by turning into a cherry tree. A journalist, haunted by the half-forgotten killing of a Bosnian couple, watches their story, and his own wartime tragedy, slip away from him. A dying American romances the ghost of his high school sweetheart while a homeless salaryman in Tokyo animates paper cutouts of ancient heroes. Are ghosts memories, fantasies, or monsters? Is there life in death? Vollmann has always operated in the shadowy borderland between categories, and these eerie tales, however far-flung their settings, all focus on the attempts of the living to avoid, control, or even seduce death. Vollmann’s stories will transport readers to a fantastical world where love and lust make anything possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not about flying only, it includes little known stories about some amazing charactersincluding the Earl of Bandon (senior RAF officer), Tony Svensson (well-known test pilot), and Ginger Lacey (WWII fighter ace)all of whom were personally known to John Daly. John reminisces on his experiences of flying multiple types of aircraft with the Royal Air Force in the 1950s and 1960s, first as a fighter pilot on the front line of defence in Germany in the Cold War and subsequently on photo reconnaissance duties in the Middle East and Africa. Of the four other authors, Angus Cameron provides some descriptions of war-time bomber operations against Germany, and Graham Neil recalls two occasions when he closely avoided sudden death. Jim Flemmings tale of a dead stick landing from 70,000 feet in USA gives one palpitations, and Peter Larards firsthand observations on flying operations in Vietnam are most penetrating. It has a wealth of humour to match the characters who appear in these pages. All aircrew will find this book informative, and everyone will find it interesting and entertaining. Any profits from the sale of this book will be passed to the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.
