Book excerpt: A New York Times bestselling author takes readers inside the Ironman triathlon. As he did so masterfully in his New York Times bestseller, The Gatekeepers, Jacques Steinberg creates a compelling portrait of people obsessed with reaching a life-defining goal. In this instance, the target is an Ironman triathlon-a 2.4-mile open-water swim followed by a 112-mile bike ride, then finally a 26-mile marathon run, all of which must be completed in no more than seventeen hours. Steinberg focuses not on the professionals who live off the prize money and sponsorships but on a handful of triathletes who regard the sport as a hobby. Vividly capturing the grueling preparation, the suspense of completing each event of the triathlon, and the spectacular feats of human endurance, Steinberg plumbs the physical and emotional toll as well as the psychological payoff on the participants of the Ford Ironman Arizona 2009. His You Are an Ironman is both a riveting sports narrative and a fascinating, behind-the scenes study of what makes these athletes keep going..

For decades, these food therapies have provided profound clinical results for thousands of patients. Our bodies are always talking and communicating their needs; we just need to learn how to listen. Or our biochemistry is changing, raising our cholesterol, making us irritable, reactive, or “foggy.” These—and other, more serious medical issues, like pre-diabetes and immune complications—hide a specific problem, for which food, not drugs, is the answer. So, if you’re suffering from GI issues, fatigue, out-of-whack-hormones, mood and cognition difficulties, elevated cholesterol, blood sugar control problems, or an autoimmune problem, Fast Metabolism Food Rx has the solution for you. With targeted eating plans, you can feed your body back to a vibrant, energetic, and thriving state.

Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author Mariko Tamaki (Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me, Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass) and artist Yoshi Yoshitani (Zatanna and the House of Secrets) comes a story about Mandy, the daughter of super-famous superhero Starfire. Seventeen-year-old Mandy, daughter of Starfire, is not like her mother. Starfire is gorgeous, tall, sparkly, and a hero. Mandy is not a sparkly superhero. Mandy has no powers. She’s a kid who dyes her hair black and hates everyone but her best friend, Lincoln. To Starfire, who is from another planet, Mandy seems like an alien, like some distant, angry, light-years away moon. And ever since she walked out on her SATs, which her mom doesn’t know about, Mandy has been even more distant. Everyone thinks Mandy needs to go to college and become whoever you become at college, but Mandy has other plans. Or she did until she gets partnered with Claire, the person she intensely denies liking but definitely likes a lot, for a school project. When someone from Starfire’s past arrives, Mandy must make a choice: give up before the battle has even begun, or step into the unknown and risk everything to save her mom. I Am Not Starfire is a story about teenagers and/as aliens; about knowing where you come from and where you are going; and about mothers.

Book excerpt: Kevin J. Mervin was one of over 2,000 British Territorial Army soldiers called up to fight in the Iraq War in February 2003. Based on a diary kept throughout his tour of duty, the author's personal account of the conflict illustrates what it was like for a 'part-timer' to fight alongside the regular army. Weekend Warrior chronicles the difficulties and traumas Mervin and his colleagues endured while carrying out their work, including situations in which they literally had to fight for their lives. The author also describes how he and his companions dealt with the horrific sights, sounds and realities of war. Thrust unexpectedly into the middle of a dangerous conflict, Mervin's memoirs relate not only the fear and excitement he experienced but also his sadness at the scenes of poverty he witnessed and his anger towards the media, which, he feels, reported the conflict to the world with an anti-war bias. On his return home, Mervin faced further challenges when he lost his job because of his call-up and he also received criticism from an often hostile public. Weekend Warrior paints a startlingly vivid picture of fear and confusion on the front line and highlights the problems faced by those lucky enough to return home.

Book excerpt: Weekends are hell. If you do them right. That's the subtext of the columns scrawled by Wiley from various states of semi-consciousness as he slinks out of the woodwork and insinuates himself into the soft underbelly of Southern California consciousness. Wilier than a coyote, badder than Santa, Gonzo'er than Dr. Duke, the Wilester lays waste to everybody in range, not least himself. There are two tributaries to the flow of "The Way of the Weekend Warrior": a normal (more of less) plot of a demented outsider snarfing up the media scene, and the content of the columns he writes and broadcasts as his weapon against normality and status quo. Taken from the syndicated cult column of the nineties, these passages snidely sneer, raucously rant, surrealistically swoop, and otherwise amaze and amuse. If you can get get through a chapter without laughing out loud, you get your money back. Well, not really, but you at least have our sympathy and scorn. Wiley is not for the meek and weak... he is THE WEEKEND WARRIOR. Read him if you dare.

Book excerpt: “A must read for anyone who wants to understand the new American way of war.” — General Michael V. Hayden, former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency A former special operations member takes us inside America’s covert drone war in this headline-making, never-before-told account for fans of Zero Dark Thirty and Lone Survivor, told by a Pulitzer Prize-winning Wall Street Journal writer and filled with eye-opening and sure to be controversial details. For nearly a decade Brett Velicovich was at the center of America’s new warfare: using unmanned aerial vehicles—drones—to take down the world’s deadliest terrorists across the globe. One of an elite handful in the entire military with the authority to select targets and issue death orders, he worked in concert with the full human and technological network of American intelligence—assets, analysts, spies, informants—and the military’s elite operatives, to stalk, capture, and eliminate high value targets in al-Qaeda and ISIS. In this remarkable book, co-written with journalist Christopher S. Stewart, Velicovich offers unprecedented perspective on the remarkably complex nature of drone operations and the rigorous and wrenching decisions behind them. In intimate gripping detail, he shares insider, action-packed stories of the most coordinated, advanced, and secret missions that neutralized terrorists, preserved the lives of US and international warriors across the globe, and saved countless innocents in the hottest conflict zones today. Drone Warrior also chronicles the US military’s evolution in the past decade and the technology driving it. Velicovich considers the future it foretells, and speaks candidly on the physical and psychological toll it exacts, including the impact on his own life. He reminds us that while these machines can kill, they can also be used productively to improve and preserve life, including protecting endangered species, work he is engaged in today. Joining warfare classics such as American Sniper, Lone Survivor, and No Easy Day,Drone Warrior is the definitive account of our nation’s capacity and capability for war in the modern age.

Book excerpt: Vietnam signaled the end of America's long history of martial victories. In Warrior Dreams, James William Gibson argues that the shame of defeat by a technologically inferior enemy, compounded by challenges to the status quo from feminism and minority groups, created a profound crisis in American identity - particularly for the white American male - and gave birth to a disturbing and reactionary new war culture designed to make America well again. Armed with a journalist's curiosity and a critic's precision, Gibson sets out to map this new American war zone. He plays paintball with Los Angeles's weekend warriors, learns to shoot like a pro at Arizona's elite Gunsite Ranch, and parties with soldiers of fortune at their annual convention in Las Vegas. Gibson surveys the combat magazines and weapons advertisements, films and novels that fuel the sexual, violent fantasies of millions of would-be warriors across the country. And he shows how this mythology, far from harmless consumer entertainment, has indeed started a new war with real warriors - Aryan Nation, contract killers, mercenaries in Central America - and with dangerous consequences for our democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All books should have at least one talking cat in them." My friend Susan Douglas believed all books should have at least one talking cat in them. She also believed in my writing ability long before I believed in it myself. After she lost her battle with cancer, I was inspired to write From Where I am Sitting, A Collection of Cat Tales to honour her memory. I developed a plan based on this quote to write a whole book from the point of view of the different cats in my life. I also wrote two chapters about Superhero Susan's cats. This is meant to be a funny, heartwarming read. The tales within may or may not completely reflect the whole truth. I have taken liberties and embellished upon some really fantastic cat tales from the points of view of the different cats that have brought their voices together to help me to write them. Each cat has its own purr-sonality, (see what I did there?) and the trick will be to let them all shine, in their own unique ways. I aspired to write in their different voices, to make it authentic, at least in terms of a fictional, humorous memoir, narrated by various cats. You will read the words of Simba, the cat who was continually amazed by everything around him. Rascal was the sook of the house, a cool cat with a lot of charisma. Mistletoe wrapped Simba, Rascal, my husband and I around her little paw. Lucy was a quirky queen in our house. Dude, well, there is a lot I could share about him, he had a fan club and loved beer for starters. There are stories told by other cats sprinkling their tales around the five pictured on the left. This group of five cats lived legendary lives, and they can't wait for you to read about their adventures!
